So, there's been a lot of "I call so and so mod" going around lately.

My question is, should that be allowed?

On the one hand, I know I'd be rather annoyed if someone beats me to my multiplayer mod, or if some had beaten me to my launcher.

However on the other hand, who's to say it won't be better?
Yea, I'd be sad that I didn't get to make the better one, but its all for the community isn't it?

What do ya'll think? Please consider this seriously before you vote.

(Voting no means that anyone is still allowed to say "I call this!" But people are not obliged to really listen to you!)

No way. If I can and want to make a better Spiderman, Evil, Giant, Potion, or Rougelike mod, then I have every right to. If a mod is a mod, and If you really want to make a mod, perhaps you should try to work with the person who started it, or just make your own.

I don't think people should be able to "Call" mods.
I voted no.

Nope.

Having multiple variations of the same mod will give people more of a choice, methinks.

I think saying in advance, "I'm making this mod" should not be allowed. However, if you are in the midst of making a certain mod, it could be quite frustrating should someone else come out with the same idea in the mean time. Considering that, collaborations or expanding existing ones should be fine. But it's kind of a dick-move to say, "oh so-and-so's making this, well I'll make it better and put it out first!".

Coincidentally, I did not vote, because I think I fall somewhere in the middle. Keeping in that spirit, I think I'll put up the source of Shopkeep if anybody thinks they can expand it. I encourage other modders to do the same, assuming you are finished with it yourself of course.

I'd consider it bad manners to make a different version of something that already exists, but I also consider it bad manners to call mods unless you've already started working on them. In other words, the only way you shohuld be able to call anything is by posting (at least) a demo.

That said, once a mod is finished (according to the author), if someone thinks they can do better, they should be able to try.

I like that compromise.

You "call" a mod by starting work on it, and showing that work has been done. If not through a workable version, then at least through devlogs.

Ideas still don't count. You must actually START work on it.

It is discouraged to make a version of a mod still in development, unless its taking forever. Wait until the original mod is at least mostly finished.

I think making something just so you can brag about it or feel good that you "did it first" is a poor reason for doing things.  Do it because you want to. Do it because you love the game and want to make it better FOR YOURSELF.  I will always share my code and if someone takes my code and calls it thier own, I really, absolutly don't care.  If I wrote the code for myself and my friends, someone else using it dosn't change how much fun I have with it.  (There are some reasons this doesn't apply, such as if your trying to gain support and you need to prove to others that your capable... but that's abit different)

BTW...  KEGLUNG... how far are you into your multiplayer mod... If I ever finish playing with the level generator I want to add MP.  If you share your code you can call my mod your own! And illegaly sell it in black market china... or atleast have my help finishing it up. Smiley

And he called Iron Man when he knew I would.
So no. Just no.
And I call make another Iron Man mod if I could.
