Now a month into winter, it seems the excitement has gone down. I sent one of our squads to patrol the entire surrounding area in case of a third goblin ambush, but things seem safe for now. The crown feels less heavy these days; perhaps it's because my tower is near completion.+Opal 5, y29+
There's a new baby in the fort. Tosid, the second child and first daughter of KarjamP and Barrett. KarjamP is now having to carry two babies with her wherever she goes. Barrett claims that he's too busy defending the fort to help care for them, but I know he's just a jerk.+Obsidian 10, y29+
The tower is complete save for a few mechanisms, leaving many masons out of work. I draft several of them into the Fortress Guard; they look at me strangely when I give the order, as if wondering if they should disobey. The crown is clearly beginning to lose its hold on people here, and I couldn't be happier about it. I'm sick of this nonsense.+Obsidian 14, y29+
Princess Tomato, recently drafted into the Fortress Guard, has given birth to her third child, a girl by the name of Medtob. Following the proud tradition of all military mothers, she will carry her babies with her into battle. This serves both to make the young ones accustomed to combat as early as possible so that they too might become great warriors, and to give the mother an extra layer of protection against arrows.+Obsidian 18, y29+
IT. IS. COMPLETE!
The year is nearly at an end, and my revenge on the crown for forcing me to construct myself a tower tomb has now been exacted. I've already mentioned the archery range jutting out from the south end, but I've done a little more...
Firstly, there are skull totems just inside the doors, for that little bit of extra decor. There's also a lever; we'll get to that in a moment.
The tomb itself is a green glass coffin in a room of green glass, suspended directly over the fortress' entrance. After I die, generations of dwarves will see my interred remains hanging over them as they enter the fort, a mad monument to the malarkey of make-believe monarchy, and realize just how stupid their ancestors were to obey someone's orders just because they're wearing some lopsided piece of rock. About the only kink is that the room will have to be temporarily unsealed so that my body can be placed in the tomb, but that's just a simple matter of constructing a temporary staircase up to one side of it, removing a wall, placing me within the coffin, and sealing the room back up.
Finally, several stories higher, we have an enclosed room into which animals can be dropped from above. Remember that lever on the ground floor? It's linked to a series of hatches going all the way up to here, eight stories above. A hapless horse has been hoisted into the high-up hellhole for the construction's first use. Now all that's left is to test it.+Obsidian 19, y29+The test was a success.
My only regret is that the tower isn't higher; it would have been even better if the splat was enough to paint the bottom floor with blood. Not that it'd be difficult to remedy this; more floors, hatches, and links to the lever could be added quite easily. I'm satisfied enough with how it turned out, though; a tower tomb that doubles as a method for efficiently slaughtering large quantities of livestock is just the sort of crazy thing I needed.+Granite 1, y30+
The crown felt almost weightless this morning, and then suddenly flared to life. Overcome by unbearable pain, I found myself stumbling towards the room of an engraver by the name of KirbyLord. My hands lifted the crown from my head and placed it on his bed. The meaning of this couldn't be cleaner; the crown has chosen him to be our next ruler. Not wanting to leave him completely at a loss for what to do, I also left him this journal; maybe it'll help him deal with this whole idiotic leadership thing. Really, though, I'm just glad it's not me anymore. I can finally get some peace and quiet.
Well, that was fun. Sorry again about being late to finish the year up.
I've uploaded the map of the fortress at the start of year 30 here
, and the save folder is here
I'll be sure to provide input when needed, especially if it's about how I left things set up; there were a few gameplay tricks I did that I didn't bother mentioning in a post. Strike the earth!
