The spelunker has been cursed!

This mod doesn't add content, but is a twist on the way the game plays. This was my first experience using Game Maker and was mostly an exercise in learning how to use it and in understanding Spelunky's code. I won't spoil things by listing the details of the mod. Have fun!

Wow cool! If I'm right, he can't be hurt, unless he kills something. But if he kills something, it also hurts him.

No, I'm seeing that the spelunker has a passive kapala, and takes damage periodically.

Well, maybe I should list some details.

The spelunker essentially starts with a kapala, but it works a bit differently. To offset this, the spelunker gradually loses life. Sort of a forced speedrun. Rescuing damsels slows the rate of life loss instead of increasing life.

This is a pretty easy mod.  Honestly, it only takes 2-3 kills for an extra health.

The black & whiteness and the no music makes it looks like an antique film.

That's intentional, it gains life quicker than the kapala. I went back and forth trying to balance the rate of life loss and may have made it a bit too easy in that regard.

Well, I guess I accomplished what I was going for in that sense. You should have music, though, if the game is running from the folder that the normal game is in.

Yeah, changing that would have meant creating separate blood bits for the player. I thought of doing that, but I ultimately decided I like that the spelunker can sometimes take hits and gain the life right back. It makes for some interesting situations with yetis and hawkmen.

If you can collect a lot of blood in the first area (snake pits help), you can go slower in the later areas. Also, rescuing damsels slows down how quickly you lose life. You start out losing one life every 20 seconds; each rescued damsel adds five seconds to that.
