A bat decided to start chasing me while I was underwater, but it didn't play its "flying" animation while it was making its way over to me.

Whenever I jump in water, bats turn around and go back to the nearest ceiling tile to sleep. You mean it actually followed you under water?

yeah, I'm pretty sure they can't go underwater. though its a situation that'd never happen in a normal game; bats and water not appearing in the same area.

Uh, careful: they do appear in the "lush" area together.

odd, I've never actually consciously acknowledged the presence of bats there even though I spend time whipping them  Tongue
