I don't think they learn a lot.
I think it's just like Afrikaans in my previous school: Required to pass, but not guaranteed learn a lot of the language nor stay with that knowledge when you leave school.

Usually English or Afrikaans I think, but other languages have been known to be on TV as well.

All English here. There are a few Spanish Channels in Texas because of immigration by Hispanics into the country. Almost everyone here is only fluent in english
