Of course it was bound to happen eventually, ever since the dawn of Spelunky players have dreamed of harnessing the awesome power of the shopkeep. The time is drawing nearer, and soon you too will feel this awesome power!

-1.6 Release-
  • All aspects of the Shopkeeper are finished. Ammo system is implemented and working perfectly.
  • Shotgun shells will now appear in boxes (fairly often, but not too often) and in weapon shops in place of shotguns.
  • New title screen (shown below).
-1.9 release 01/22/10-
  • Shotguns will add 7 shells when picked up
  • Jump lowered to three tile max.
  • A few other secret changes not relating to gameplay as well.
  • Mattock breaking fixed, no longer shoots when breaking
  • Wanted poster changed to reflect shopkeeper player
  • Shortcuts now start with normal starting ammo
  • Music will continue to play until area transition (great for custom music)
  • Mantrap now eats shopkeeper and not Spelunky
  • Sticky bomb with staying in hand bug fixed (problem with shotgun)
-1.9.2 release, small update 1/28/10-
  • Shotgun icon removed from HUD
  • "new item" HUD icon added
  • "new item" added to editor
  • added ball & chain ball to carried item box in HUD

The next thing I'd like to try is to add shops in the editor, this is not entirely likely to happen, so unless there are other suggestions for all intents and purposes, I consider this finished.

Gummy, I think you should save up to get GM. Switching sprites like this is nothing compared to what the other guys are doing. Learn that as fast as you learned about tweaking stuff and you could probably do some cool things.

Any heck most of my hack was guess work. Anyone could of done it.

But really, I would make one more area and new levels...
There would be more items (TOTALLY SPANKIN' NEW)
I would also put another minigame in the game

This is what I'm wondering about, here's my thoughts.
The Hard Way
1.He can start with a shotgun, but coded differently to have limited bullets. Also unable to drop it, which means adding ammo to the random places, additionally it would actually act as a challenge since you would have no melee weapon. If I could code it that way, it would have to not be a carried item so you could still pick stuff up (possible graphical issues).
The Easy Way
2.Just give him a frickin shotgun! Balancing issues be damned! I actually dropped mine when testing and wasn't able to get it back, this would still be close to the original game since you would need to juggle.
The Normal Way
3.Give him nothing, start as normal. These two options mean replacing the sprite for whipping, no big deal, but I kind of wanted him with a different weapon. Maybe a jimmy stick or something?

Right now I'm testing him with Dereks debug code to just push enter and make stuff happen (Yay cheating!  Grin) I might throw it together quickly and let you guys try it like that to get some feedback on the idea of starting with it.

the hard way would be hard... ask the guy thats doing cursed items how to not get rid of an item.

Don't bother with torrents -- some of them are completely trash.

Use a security scan or something to scan your computer and hopefully get rid of the viruses.

You do have anti-virus software, right?

Yeah, that's what I'd like to do, for now I'll get the sprites finished and probably just leave the debug code open. That way if you want to use the shotgun from the start, it will be there, otherwise Shopkeep will use his "belt" to "whip" enemies. Wink

Incidentally, if I can get the permanent s-gun and limited ammo working, (probably witha lot of help) I want to change his melee attack into a pistol whip animation, (with the shotgun I mean) instead of having no melle. I think this would be more acceptable, he could still do something but have an extremely limited range.

Keeping on track, I am off work tonight so plan on getting the rest of the animations done if possible. After some testing it may be available as an early test release tomorrow, most likely very early in the morning.

It would be interesting do that that... to hit with the shot gun you would have to make the shotgun in his hand go away for a moment, then reappear... if you could do that it would be easy.
