It's just a bug.  Taking off high detail removes the grass, and the tree limbs aren't dead because they happened to spawn right next to each other.  The game tried to connect the branches, but it doesn't use the dead tree version for that.
Still doesn't make sense, there is a check in place to switch the sprites if the area is a restless dead feeling. Some code must be out of place to remove the checks for this circumstance.
