Hey, I am running my Spelunky on a windows 8 laptop, through steam and haven't been able to open up the game. When I select [PLAY] from the steam list the screen goes black (as if opening a full screen game) and then goes back to the steam menu and in it's own separate window, it says "Spelunky.exe has stopped working, we are trying to find a solution to your problem" and then when it is done it says "Spelunky.exe has stopped working" and then gives me to option to close program.

Things I have tried:
Restarting my laptop
Redownloading and installing Spelunky
Very basically messing around with compatibility modes

I hope you can find a solution to my problem, if you need further details, feel free to ask me  Cheesy

I may not be able help you.

But mentioning your laptop's specs will be necessary.

Oh, okay, thanks.
Processor: Intel Core i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40GHz
RAM: 8.00GB
System Type: 64-Bit Operating System, x64-based processor
*Also has NVidia GEFORCE

Hope some help comes soon, it'd really suck to waste money on a good game that I can't play :l

I figured out the problem, the game didn't like being fullscreen, so I changed it in the txt. file. Now it opens, but when I attempt to change it to fullscreen the game crashes and comes up the same old error message as before... Does anyone know what it happening and how I fix it?

EDIT: Also now when I attempt to change it to fullscreen instead of showing me the steam window it shows me a windowed version of the game (takes up the entire screen) but is entirely black with the error message in the middle. Then when I reboot the game it just works as before, but in windowed mode again. Just added that in incase it was important.

ANOTHER EDIT: Also may be good to note that my resolution it 1366x768.

So now I realize that I was running my game on a lower resolution that my laptop, so when I attempted to change it, guess what happened? It crashed with the exact same error message. So there is another problem. My game seems to not want to change the screen size at all as it won't allow me to edit resolution or toggle fullscreen without crashing. I really don't wanna have to play windowed my entire spelunky life Sad

Quite strange. 1366x768 fullscreen works fine for me.

I think it's a graphics card problem.

Have you updated its drivers to the latest version?

Well I don't really know how to :l...
All that I know is that I have NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M - Version 311.41
Do I just go on some NVIDIA updater page or something? or do I need to update my Intel I7?

Fullscreen_Effects:
2
Dynamic_Shadows:

Okay I figured out a small solution. I changed the resolution so it perfectly fits on the screen as if in fullscreen mode (still has bar up the top but meh). I can live with this, thanks for your helps!

Have you tried pressing "Alt+Enter". Does Spelunky.exe crash after doing that?

I'd say it's a problem still related to the graphics card, or a program's interfering with it.

Are you running any PC enhancers, or something, boosted the computer's components in some way (like overclocking them), etc.?

Alt+Enter did nothing but make my computer go "bloom" and I only have Steam Skype and Evolve open while it's on.
