I think he just didn't want to make the poor kid play the super evil, soul crushing, spirit killing game that is Spelunky.
Y'know, he's a little kid. It might make him sad to fail horribly over and over again.

I don't think that's true, anyone with small nephews wouldn't hand over the reigns to something like Spelunky either. It doesn't make it bad, it's just unforgiving. There's little room for error, and a small, short-lived reward for none. Look at the story from the bright side, Knytt brought this kid plenty of fun.
