When you do get some shortcuts, keep in mind that it's often easier to start from the beginning as you get to tackle the harder levels with the handy items you've obtained.

Shortcuts are a MUST. Using them to avoid the beginingmay also avoid usefull items, but when you're going for your first win they are necessary. Practice how to properly steal from the shopkeeper (grab item, slowly start to leave so he follows, at the edge of the shop jump ou then onto his head, drop item and grab shotgun, SHOOT HIM), practice ALOT.
Everyone else's tips need not be repeated, you should have them memorized. Especially the risk/reward factoring, to be slow and careful, and all that.
Watch a few LP's, they can help. I only know of brickroadbrickroad's Let's Play, but he does reveal some intersting tips in it.

Well I finally got my first two full runs of the game, one of them unlocking the moon room. My advice is - Run only when necessary to escape danger or jump gamps.
- Get a cape.
- Don't kill shopkeepers
If you see a shop with a cape, just steal it. As long as you don't kill the shopkeeper in doing so you only have to avoid him for one more level to get off the wanted list. Both times I beat the game I had just a cape and no other weapons. It's actually not that hard to beat the boss only using the corpse of an enemy as your primary weapon. |

Personally I prefer the jetpack over the cape but the cape is useful on the last boss level... And the scepter is very important too... don't forget the KAPALA!!! |

I always got the climbing glove when possible, even if you forget about it it's nice to grab the wall when you think you're falling to death. Obviously the jet-pack is preferable to most other similar equipment.
