So a cobra got into a shop and the spit hit the shopkeeper. I fully expected him to flip out, but he didn't. Whew. Then it occurred to me that the venom hits might eventually kill him, in which case I'd surely be blamed anyway, so I tried to finish the level quickly. (This was happening one floor above me, so I couldn't easily intervene.) But soon enough I saw "You'll pay for you crimes!!!" or however that goes. Dammit. I assumes what I feared had happened, but just before I exited, I also noted that the level was getting foggy.

Then on the next level I find a casino, and to my surprise, the guy's not trying to kill me.

So it seems like maybe the venom hit on the shopkeeper left a spurious "crime" message in a queue or something, and then it showed up when the "terrible chill" message should have.

Known bug?

IIRC, someone (more specifically somevcs92) had reported before that there's a bug that causes Shopkeepers to become non-hostile once hit by cobra spit. Don't know if it's fixed or not.

Either this, or you're right, wrong message display.

Said bug's "intentional programming", as it was made that way to fix a bug where the Shopkeeper got angry for no apparent reason.

That, or if it makes hostile shopkeepers non-hostile, then it's a bug.

Better ask the one who said it i.e. somevcs92, because I never encountered it.
I don't know about the latter one, but I have tested the first one i.e. spit doesn't make shoppies hostile. You should better read the actual post.

Actually, I would like, if enemies really don't hurt and aggro the shopkeepers.

If the cobra spit actually forces him back to calm after going agro I'd have to agree that's a bug too, although not necessarily directly related to the one I noticed.

Edit:
And oddly enough, I think I just encountered that one too. It didn't happen on screen, but I was in the temple area, after having successfully gone on a crime spree throughout earlier levels, so of course there should have been an angry shoppy waiting for me by exit, but instead there was a peaceful (and unarmed) shoppy, a shotgun just lying there, and a cobra. It's not hard to guess what happened.
