I bought the game from Steam... and I thought that I could use that game pad for it. So, I plugged it in... made sure Windows 7 knew about it and made sure it worked. The D-pad and all the 6 buttons worked. And I ran the game... but it doesn't seem to recognize the game pad. Is there any way for me to get it to work without having to install emulation software or joystick to keypress software? You'd think a well known game pad like that would still have support?

Your gamepad doesn't natively support Xinput, the standard of game controllers required by a lot of games nowadays.

Use this to simulate support.
