Just me thinking aloud. I know that it is better off as a mod, and also that Game Maker doesn't support Unicode (although one can put kana in a sprite and set it as a font). I won't be making this mod, especially because I don't know Japanese yet (I'm planning to go to a language school in Cape Town).

Isn't most of the text in sprite formate anyway? could you just change it?

You would still have to rewrite a lot considering the alphabet does not directly mirror English.
