I came across Spelunky from an interview in Gamasutra. In the comments section, there was someone saying they were going to buy an Xbox just for this game, and another saying the 2 games he was most looking forward this year were XBLA Spelunky and the new X-COM game. Those were BIG words. So after seeing the reviews and downloading the demo saw what the fuzz was about. This game is a masterpiece. It has reminded me why I started playing video games as a kid. But it blows all those platformers from the 80’s and 90’s out of the water. I haven’t gotten to the ice caves yet, and I’m a little disappointed I read the guide to reach the secret areas. It would have been much cooler to discover the ones I been to by accident, or at least to have put in a good 400 deaths before looking this stuff up.

I hope you guys make enough money off this game so that your next game has a shorter development cycle. I’m already anticipating what Mossmouths’ next project is going to be (after ironing the bugs and possibly doing some DLC?). Has there been any sales numbers published for this game so far? I expect with the reviews it got it must have sold pretty well.

Awesome post, just wanted to point something out.

Money doesn't make game development any faster short of hiring a bunch of new people, at least not for Derek I imagine, since he strives for "Nintendo quality" until it can be considered complete. In fact, some developers work the opposite, like Edmund McMillen (Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac), who has said that he actually loses a lot of his motivation if he gets paid in advance.

I can see why too. Maybe that is why games suck nowadays
