Derek Yu's Spelunky (at top) is easily the best example, and where all discussion of the indie embrace of procedural generation needs to start. Taking the Rogue formula and applying it to the 8-bit platformer genre, Spelunky's enduring power and charm (having been finessed for nearly a year, and only just now hitting its 1.0 release) is its ability to create "situations" rather than rote level layouts.

First off, I'm new to the MossMouth forums, but excited to be here -- I've seen a lot of great talent, friendliness and community out of the members of this forum which finally led me to register myself.

Anyways, cool article link. Spelunky really is a fabulous cross-genre blend of games, taking and polishing some of the most interesting aspects of as many as 7 genres off the top of my head, with the final product being a veritable "City of Gold" of a game. I'm really happy that people all over the internet are picking up on how excellent its game design and execution are, and that it has gotten so much praise.
