Video of the boss in action. Barbarian vanishes in some of the damaged frames because youtube converted the 60fps video to 30fps.

Nice! I though game maker could only run 30 fps though

You can set Gamemaker to any fps. Game runs at 60fps, that's about the max around where people notice a difference in tightness of controls.

Still trying to come up with ideas for the Third Stage's gimmick.

I'm gonna go critically review this game, because it deserves to be critically reviewed.
This game brought me no fun or even a shine of happiness.
First of all, the control. I understand it's supposed to be a throwback to old Castlevania games, but that doesn't mean you have to include the crappy control which no one likes! Combine with cheapness this has brought me so many cheap deaths. For example, in the sewers level there is this zombie with a crossbow shooting at me while I have to hop across platforms.
This wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for the control.
If I jump to the left, I fall in water and die, if I jump to the right, I fall in water and die. If I jump upwards then the platform will move and I will land in a totally different place on the platform, making me have to go back to the front of it so I'm close enough to jump to the next. This usually also results in the zombie shooting again, causing the whole thing to start over again.
If I DO get to the zombie then I will probably die from him knocking me off the platform because I didn't know when he was gonna shoot and me not having enough time to jump over the arrow because I am right next to him!
Shit like this pisses me off and isn't fun. Challenge in a game is great, but when you resort to cheapness then the game goes to challenging to unfair.
This game is very very poor.
2 stars.

I disagree. The only cheapness it has ever brought me is accidently climbing stairs. This is a great game! Also the bats in the first area need tweaking. I can never seem to hit them. Otherwise good job!

Music from a chiptune artist that's agreed to compose a soundtrack for the game! I'm loving it.

Edit:
Also, can anyone point me in the direction of some tips on compressing video of small, pixelized games like this and having the quality turn out well?

Edit2:
I see that SuperX46 isn't a fan of the classics. Old nintendo stuff was hardddddd

To be fair your criticism was not completely constructive although he did not address the issues

No, but they are a sine wave and random noise so it's not like there's much difference Tongue

Difficulty wise, I'm not designing this game to be breezed through. The jumping mechanics and falling is a valid game play element, that with a bit of practice at the game is completely useable. I'm also not including Death (the boss) or a Medusa heads over endless pits equivalent!

I'm totally open to constructive criticism, but not complaining about difficulty where I'm pretty sure I'm not completely out of my mind yet for including (if I start adding pixel perfect jumps or similar, shoot me!).

I'm also not of a high opinion of most things SuperX46 says, having viewed his general attitude and postings on these forums.
edit:
Wish that last bit sounded less mean, but it's true.

Try to find a video editor (or a plugin for one) that supports a hqx algorithm (hq2x, hq3x or hq4x).

This would help scale it neatly.

If you're looking for better compression (to "Compress it well"), try downloading XVid and compress it using that.

I don't know if it make the file smaller, XVid is popular.
