I started thinking recently of all the horror style games I've played or known over the years, and figured I would share for the Yahtzee fans and all. Of course I started playing Silent Hill a lot recently, which is still one of the best. I've also mentioned Fatal Frame before, but haven't really explained it, so I guess I'll go into some detail here and try to add links if you're interested.

Silent Hill-The series follows different characters each entering the ghost town of Silent Hill for various reasons. As a whole the games tend to follow themes of loss, pain, and redemption and emphasize a (usually) well written story with excellent sound design and amazing atmosphere.

Fatal Frame-These games have you exploring haunted mansions with a special 'excorcism camera'. Sounds really weird, but also has great atmosphere and tends to freak you out by not making it obvious when a ghost will attack or just show up for a photo op. Also breaks many video game standards by allowing enemies to follow you through doors and some that can't be killed.

Clock Tower-Originally on Famicom, but the one I know better is from PSX, also different style games with the same name but follow one story (apparently?). A point and clock (get it?!) horror game with multiple paths and endings, finishing with certain conditions allowed you to play as a different character and uncover clues you wouldn't otherwise see. When the killer, Scissorman, comes after you there is no choice but to hide. And there's no guarantee he won't find you either, it can really work on your nerves but great for the tension. Who will make it through this game of murder alive? was the tagline and it's still awesome.

Echo Night: Beyond-Another 'ghost hunter' style game, but with more adventure game elements to it. It takes place on a space station after your shuttle crashes down. The game has no combat that I remember, but you do deal with good and bad spirits. It has much more of an exploration feel than survival horror, but it doesn't skimp on scary atmosphere. (sensing a trend here yet?)

Indigo Prophecy (or Fahrenheit)-Probably the most well known, and could be called Heavy Rain JR. Indigo Prophecy did a lot of interesting things, allowing you to see both sides of a story but still feel like there is a mystery to solve. Playing as a killer and trying to desperately cover your tracks, then switching to the police attempting to un-cover those same tracks would be easy to screw up, but somehow it worked out well...until the second act at least. It added up to a lot of quicktime events (any wonder about Heavy Rain?) but was still pretty unique and interesting, worth finishing once at least. (also, probably doesn't fit as well in a horror genre, but since the game starts with a voodooish ceremony where you are forced to kill a guy, it has a similar vibe)

Indie titles that are worth mentioning (other than Penumbra and Amnesia) include, SuteF, the Mondo games (Mondo Medicals and Agency), Madhouse, Judith, Escape from the Underworld, Don't Look Back, Glum Buster (awesome), and Vox Populi Vox Dei the werewolf thriller. Most of those are made with game maker, so should be easy to find.

I'm having trouble finding one game that I'm pretty sure was from one of the TIGS competitions though. You play an ice cream man who is actually a werewolf and have to serve kids the treats they want, then lure them back to your slaughter field and gobble them up. Which somehow makes new flavors of ice cream (eww?) to sell and fatten up more kids. That was a cool game.

I remember Glum Buster! I don't remember where I found it, though. ^_^"
On one of the gaming DVDs that came with a magazine, that's all I know.

Judith was a game made by Terry Cavanaugh, I thought for some compo but can't tell. Anyway, it's not really a horror game, but kind of mystery/suspense thing? Sort of like 'Dear Esther' if you've seen this. Hard to explain really but its fairly short, download in the link still works btw.

I also forgot- Rule of Rose, Eversion, All of Our Friends Are Dead & Au Sable.
(Sorry been finishing Silent Hill 3)

Is Judith the game which has a lot of doors in a secret area of a castle, and at some point, somebody kills a tortured prisoner?

No it's an old house, that sounds more like Amnesia. This is a little indy game with simple graphics.
