Why hasn't there been a community built mod yet? Think of the levels of crazy-awesome that could be achieved with several people working together!

I mean, I'm mostly just day-dreaming aloud, but I've always had desire of having a really large-scale, content packed mod that just totally eclipses the original game, and I think such a thing could be possible as a group effort.

In truth...it's because collaboration is hard.  Even Ant's new Spelunky forums mod is just creeping along, and that's about as simple a collab as you can ask for.  It's nice to think we could get organized and work together and make something super-amazing, but really...you can expect half of everyone who signs up to flake on you, and unless the project leader has the tenacity to see it through, chances are it'll never be done.

I can't put my finger on why, but Ant's thing seems like a different situation, sort of more of a "you can help if you want" type thing and not a real collab

Furthermore I dont think any of the big name modders of the forum (You, Mars, Hype, and Moloch) seem like the flaker-kind, I mean you've all supported your mod for a few years now (Albeit Moloch seems to be away and Mars makes new simple mods rather than updating one big mod)

And even if it ends up failing you can say you tried, you never know if it would have worked out if you dont try!

so far I've only come up with basic (though still a pain to add I'm sure) stuff like character compilation (so basically adding things like the shopkeeper mod and tls via characters) better menus, a new world set (which has been said to be very hard, but no one has done it yet so I think it would be fairly awesome)

The thing about our major modders seeing their mods through is that it's their mod. With collabs, not everyone gets exactly what they want, or to work on their vision. It's harder to be motivated if it isn't your own idea.

Just get me working on some non-creative code, like a menu or something, and I can do it fine.

If you want to start something, get some order first. Ask what the goals are, see what people ideally want. Get volunteers. Get a group irc channel for fast communication (or anything of the sort). See what each volunteer can do, see what each is seeking to accomplish, and see each's level of ability. Manager gives out tasks then, and sets an ideal time to be completed by. Have weekly check ins (or twice a week) on progress...

Well, one can go on. I'm certainly missing necessary steps, that's just kind of an example.

Part of the reason its creeping along is because NO ONE IS REQUESTING THINGS ANYMORE
