What are the scariest moments you've ever experienced in games?
Share your horror stories here.

First that comes to my mind: When I was around the age of 9, 10, or 11, not sure when exactly, I was playing Luigi's Mansion, and it provided me with the worst mindfuck I'd ever had to that day. Even though clearly the ghosts were fake, I was just so terrified and I still don't know why. But now, today, I play games like Dead Space and I don't even flinch and the shit that jumps out at me. I dunno, I guess that certain things just really affect you in ways you'd never expect.

Amnesia: Dark Descent. Made worse is I was in a group Skype call the night we all decided to play it, and some were up to 15 minutes ahead of the others in the game (or 15 minutes behind, perspective), so I'd hear them freaking up and it would build anxiety towards whatever was next. The first half of the game easily took the cake for sheer terror though. By the second half I was acclimated enough where it was scary, but not so much as to make me pause the game for a few minutes from it all.

I can't wait to get Amnesia. It looks like a lot of horror filled funness.

Also, Fatal Frame looks pretty awesome in the fear category.

  • -Getting impaled by a spider out of nowhere in Limbo. Couldn't play it after that.
  • -World 4 in Eversion.
  • -The entire second half of Luna 3.
  • -Secret third ending in Where We Remain.
  • -When those ghosts suddenly attack you at random in An Untitled Story.

EDIT: Read what I said about Thief 3 first!
Pteri: Yes, the first section, the forest, was fucking terrifying! You really should play a little bit more, though, at least until the end of the forest. After that, it loses some of the scaryness. The chaos of the forest just makes it pterifying! Cheesy

Also, I've had this game personally recommended to me by several people who are into horror games, and they say it's top notch.
I quote:
Quote
If you think Amnesia was scary, if it made you afraid of the dark, don't even try playing Scratches or you'll end up in an asylum.

No release from the shadows in here.

Also: The Shalebridge cradle in Thief 3.
Period.
That was the most fucking scary thirteen hours of my life. Yes, it took that long, because I had to keep taking a break, to calm my nerves.
If you don't think you're gonna play the game any time soon, take a moment to read through the Wikia page on that level, taking care to open a tab to read all the other pages it mentions.

Seriously, it is drop-dead terrifying.
Actually, what the hell am I saying.
GO PLAY THE FUCKING GAME NOW!
It is most likely my favorite game in existence!

EEEEEDDDDDDIIIIITTTTT!!!
Read this instead!
http://gillen.cream.org/thecradle.pdf
READ THE WARNING!!
A few choice quotes from it:
"It is probably the scariest level ever made"
"Masterful psychology: make you hate one thing, then take it away in a way which makes you wish for its speedy return."
"“The heat must be of the dry variety” he urges, and “hot elements must be laid directly onto the skin.”"
"I wondered if there was in fact any way out of this place, or whether the real end of Thief III is to be batted around like a mouse in the diseased paws of some malevolent feline, forever."
"The Cradle’s in me. If you’ve played it, it’s in you. Even if you haven’t, by reading this, a shadow of my dread is cast on your mind."

Doom. The dark room full of mainframe computer equipment. Growling. No idea where the growling is coming from... oh, I stepped on a switch! The lights come on and the computers recess into the floor... AAA DEMONS EVERYWHERE!!!

Also, Ocarina of Time, when you visit Castle Town, and do the time warp... I SEE DEAD PEOPLE! And they're going to eat me!

I WAS going to post this in the creepypasta thread, but I realized this existed, so here, and I'm not editing out the references to the other thread

So I was reminded of something after reading the other creepypasta thread on here

This isn't so much a creepypasta, just a short rambly recalling of something that actually happened to me a while ago

About, what, three years ago I finally got to play portal through Steam's "omg we're on mac now pls have free gam" promotional thingy. Needless to say I loved it, but I was even MORE of a coward back then and a lot of the game freaked me out (the red rooms in the escape, the radio fizzle and static, and falling into the water eugh I hate murk). So after a game full of getting afraid over nothing I finally get to GLaDOS, beat her and whatnot, and then she dies.

But, when she's beat her voice spazzes out, from what I know that's supposed to happen, only for me it went on for the entirety of the credits, which were for whatever reason desynced from the subtitle-movie-thingy. So I sat there, at the credits, with still alive playing and GLaDOS, who's still in the demonic dying voice, tell me how terrible I am and how she's going to kill me, and since the song is ahead of the credits I get a few last moments to listen to her growl at me before I get back to the main menu.

And that's it. Has to be the creepiest fucking glitch I have ever had happen to me (Then again the only other creepy glitch I've had was Jade falling off a ledge in BG&E HD. You aren't supposed to fall off in that game, the platforming is on rails, when you do fall you're greeted to a black void)

as pointed out on tv tropes: there are dead things in the well. people drink out of that well.

You explore a haunted mansion with creepy music and a temple that was used by the Royal family as part tomb part torture chamber. For starters.

I'm reminded of my time playing The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (for those unaware, ever since playing this game I've fallen in love with TES, such a great series). Unlike  Oblivion the game is very dark in mood (Skyrim brought this back somewhat), and in actual color. It's also a LOT harder. Enemies aren't leveled with you, so if you venture to some new area don't be surprised if you're fighting of tentacled insects that can kill you in seconds, or ogre appearing demons eager to crush you under their heel. Worse still were the many Daedric Shrines (daedra being akin to demons, if much more complex in truth), and seeing some great loot in them. Hey that high leveled sword could really help kill that guy for X mission. Let me just take it, cool. What was that sound? Turn around and there's a damned high level Dremora (powerful humanoid Daedra) swinging a daedric axe (most powerful class of weapons) down on you head. Really just exploring in general was tense and frightening, and you'd be wise to save often;
