Fans Enjoying Spelunky at PAX 2011

It's been a long time since our last site update! Since then, quite a lot has happened: we went to PAX 2011 and exhibited alongside the amazing Faraway, we produced our first batch of Spelunky Minis figurines (not yet for sale online!), and even entered next year's IGF! Andy also made a rap video about Magic: the Gathering with composer Laura Shigihara last week, at the annual TIGJam.

Is all of our fun getting in the way of Spelunky's development? Not at all! Plenty of time has been spent in the lab, as well, and we're pleased to say that we can see some light at the end of this randomly-generated tunnel. In fact, the majority of the work left is in satisfying Microsoft's requirements for certification and in polishing the game to a point where we can be really happy releasing it. I wrote an article about polishing here, on my game making blog. Check it out!

I have more articles planned that go a little more in-depth into the design and new features. I'd like to cover random level generation and multiplayer, among other things. Let me know if there's anything else you'd like me to talk about. As always, make sure you check the Spelunky twitter for the most up-to-date Spelunky news!

Yeah!
I was super excited when I noticed Spelunky on the IGF entry list, even though it means a few other games I'm supporting, like King Arthur's Gold, Gemini Rue and Frozen synapse, now have no chance!  Tongue

Haha, good eye, Bae. I'm still working on the art, so I haven't "stroked" all the sprites in Photoshop. That's the last step in the arting process. Grin

Sweet! I hope this great news will bring some attention back to the somewhat inactive forums.

Could not agree with you better: I personally do not own a working Xbox, and i'm sure that there are way more people like me that only own a PS3. With the large fan base that the PC version recieved, a PS3 release wouldn't be mandatory but it would satisfy everyone, whereas an Xbox exclusive would disappoint many people and be aimed only to a portion of the Spelunky audience that has grown over the three years of the original version being released.
I support a PSN release! I don't know if Derek Yu will release it or not for PSN but hope is better than nothing i guess...

I really don't think anyone needs to suggest porting spelunky, we've already said we want it a few dozen times before so I don't think saying it again will change anything, that said though I can't imagine they wouldn't unless theyre under a contract with microsoft. Just wait and see what happens, yeah?

Personally I'm expecting it to be ported to steam later and have some HalfLife universe character added like SMB did

Heh, there's not much harm in a little wink. c:

But yeah. Seeing as that's my only way of playing it (unless it releases on Steam and I can pay someone off for it)I'm looking forward to ports. c:

Same here, actually. And since that PAX photo quite clearly shows Spelunky running on laptops, it can hardly even be called a port! Cheesy
