So, I triggered a boulder trap, and followed the boulder as it went by. Something horrifying happened. It went into a shop! I was in shock, I couldn't believe it. This happened to me before, but I was so surprised. But guess what? It stopped RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE SHOPKEEPER AND THE SHOP WAS COMPLETELY UNHARMED. I was exactly one block away from being hunted down for the next levels. If that isn't one of the luckiest things to happen in Spelunky history, I have no idea what is.

Haha, close one!

However, one thing you should try practicing is dealing with shoppies.
This means several things:
First and foremost, learn to fight them.
This is more than a little tricky in the best of situations, and so I would suggest avoid fighting them if possible. Try chucking a bomb somewhere where they're likely to land, or get them to bounce off-screen so you can make a getaway.
If they don't have a gun, then you've got two options: try and fight, because it'll be waaaay easier now that they're disarmed, or ignore. Ignoring is generally your best bet, since they essentially become useless once they've got no gun, but can tear you apart in close quarters.
A standard technique to use if you have a ranged weapon is getting them off-screen. That way, you can pound them with shots until you're sure they're dead.
Be careful about that though, as an inquisitive glance could cost you your face!
EDIT: NEVER let a shoppie touch you if you've got a gun. They can disarm and shoot faster than Trinity!

Second, learn to shoplift.
There are loads of ways to do this, some destructive, some not, but I'll leave you to figure them out for yourself!  Cheesy
Wouldn't want to give everything away now, would we?

It's especially easy to shoplift if it's a weapon shop, considering you can just pick up a weapon and blow them away.

Pretty much.
But remember: A weapon shop is generally the least profitable heist, as if your method of robbery involves killing the shoppie, like you describe, then you're going to get a shotgun anyways.

Do you mean when you pick her up, and put her down, and the dumb bitch walks runs out, and he blames you?

Yep!

Quick and painless, for ample rewards.
Of course, it requires a way of removing the shoppie.
Again, if killed, shottie get, if avoided, less punishment after!

I like doing that, escaping with a rope, saving the damsel, and then when the shoppy comes out, i jump on his head, and take his gun, and run away as fast as I can XD

I'm going to try a shoplifting playthrough. Normally I wouldn't, but hell, the shopkeeper is going to hunt me down over something stupid anyways, so why not?

Update to that: I got a shotgun get in a crate super early in level one. Time to do this.

But it's the easiest, and sometimes it's not always with a shotgun.

I'm not stating that it's a bad one. It's easily my most common!
But still, the gains are somewhat less than robbing, say, a bomb shop.

The reason weapon shops aren't as good is you can't bring six items with you on your journey (YASM makes it possible).

I almost always rob shops and I'm pretty good at taking them out before they shoot once. (Grab item, walk almost out, then jump out so he doesn't shoot, fall on he since he automatically runs out, steal his shotgun, shoot him at point blank before he comes around, ???, profit)
Run-on sentences FTW!

I got good at stealing in TLS, but Vanilla stealing is still a little tricky for me without the use of explosives or firearms.
