I never won, and I exclusively play YASM (I suck, I know) I play a game once in a while, I have gotten to the final boss twice and died both times, I even got to the City of Gold twice and died once there from my own bomb with 185,000$ haha.
Still, I consider Spelunky to be one of the best games ever, and can't wait for the XBLA version.

YASM makes it easier for the most part, aside from the annoying fact that you can't see as much below you when it goes full screen.

But the beauty that is Spelunky is that you rarely ever feel as if you had a cheap death. 99% of the time it's your own fault, and you sure as hell know it. you are all trolling, right? I've celebrated my 200th finish some while ago...

No I'm serious. I just rush. I, for one, can't really plan out anything when there is a time limit, however forgiving it is. I'm too nervous. Plus I'm just not very good at the game. Yeah. I'm kinda the same. I run the WHOLE time. except the moments it takes for X to switch from walking to running. I think the furthest I ever made it from the very very beginning was level 13, but then I died from one of Kali's followers.
*shakes head* That's the problem, the time limit is to make sure you don't take too LONG. Not to keep you on your toes. You've got plenty of time on your hands, as long as you're not doing something you shouldn't be doing. Also, don't run. Just don't do it. It's a great way to see a trap too late and get owned by it.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAA? I don't run because of the time limit I never even really had much of an issue with it. I don't think I've ever been killed by the ghost :O I run because in general, it is better when you're moving faster, unless you're running around without a flare in the dark or not paying proper attention to the game, but many jumps, I couldn't make if I wanted to without running, and also since shift is too uncomfortable for me to use, and I can't think of anything more comfortable, I have to use my action button when using the keyboard, and it's generally easier to just keep running, rather than constantly whip nothing whenever I need to start running. A lot of the time, I only die now, because I'll get caught somewhere with a bat overhead with no ropes, or something like that, I've actually gotten much better since I started, and I do know how to properly defeat the boss, even though I haven't gotten to him in the plain ol' spelunky. simply stated, I just don't find the game nearly as enjoyable unless I sprint almost the whole time. oh well. My loss if I never win, but I think I'd rather win, and have fun doing it

I just won YASM for the first time, yeah it's much easier I know but I am still proud, not to mention it was a merchant-killing run

Yeah, I seem to get the furthest when I kill a shoppy in the initial levels, and have little health. Maybe subconscious motivation? :3

Back on topic... I hope the difficulty in the XBLA version is a bit nerfed, at the risk of angering Kali and her followers here in the forums Like I have been saying in previous posts, I exclusively play YASM because I suck at Spelunky. I can kick the ass of ultra hard games like Super Meat Boy (done 106% three times) and Trials HD (youtube/qcchopper) but Spelunky keeps kicking my sorry ass senseless. I will buy it no matter what but I hope it's a bit more friendly, however, I am prepared to be crushed.

Keep in mind most Spelunky players take several hundreds, sometimes thousands of deaths before they can beat it. It's a learning process and dying is the best way to get better.
I remember back when I first played this game, I could barely get to level 2. Now that I know all the little tricks that the game likes to throw at you, and all the little tips to counter them, I can get much further, even if I haven't played in a long time, just because I know.

Yeah, I had about 5 months where I didn't play at all, and I'm just as -good- now, as I was before I didn't play fora long time. Mostly because I learned to do fliphangs and how to time certain jumps and such.

In the beginning I used to esc-f1 every time I fell in a hole with a spider web because I didn't realize those things could be broken. I also hated spiders until my girlfriend showed me a really neat trick to beat them very easily. It's nice to have someone else play the game as well, as you can learn quite a bit from each other. This thread makes me slightly tempted to make a video of a spelunky run once, but I haven't done anything like it before, and I'm not sure the trouble is worth it.

First: Congratulations, QcChopper! Second: what should be remembered about Spelunky is that the difficulty is all part of the fantastic design. Most players will always have something to aspire to, something to discover. I, for one, have only got into the City of Gold once, and the City of Meat 3 times. I still have much to explore in those areas, and so the compulsion to play is still there.

Last night I got 2 jetpacks via crates in the same run... I died on level 14, right by the exit!

Me too! Until I figured out that trick, spiders were my worst nightmare. I still hate those god awful frogs though.
