So I just started playing Spelunky and I can not figure out how to buy from shops. I stand on top of a item press P nothing happens. If I try crouching and pressing P still, Nothing happens. Any help?

You must be holding the item to buy it.  Pick up an item and press P, and you'll buy it if you have enough.  Otherwise, you'll drop it automatically.

You don't BUY stuff from shops,You walk in and get shot for no reason because something pissed shoppy off earlier.

If the item has a $ above it, pick it up with down+x, then press P.
If the item doesn't have a $ above it, run, because the shopkeeper wants to kill you.
