I was relieved/surprised when this happened to me and I didn't get sacrificed!

Hang on hang on, how about this: sacrificing yourself specifically generates an Ankh. This little (hypothetical) detail explains their existence in the game world. And that Shopkeeper in the Black Market just got a load of worrisome backstory.
