I tried loading both Spelunky and config.exe but they both crashed. When loading Spelunky, the splash graphic shows up, then a dialog appears that says "Failed to initialize Direct Music Audio.". Then another dialog, titled "Error Messages", with the following text:

Initialization of the sound system failed!
I have the option here to "abort" or "ignore"; if I "ignore" a dialog appears that says "Unexpected error occured [sic] when running the game." and the program exits.
I'm running on a new install of Windows, so I assume the reason I'm getting this message is because I haven't installed the drivers for my sound card yet.
