First stop. slow down.

this isn't easy, it isn't as easy as having an idea.

2nd this is the wrong place. go to the place for mods.

You willing to fork over $25 bucks? That's how much it costs to make mods.
Seriously, I'm not joking.

It's a lot easyer then java to learn, and you can make some really cool games.

If you're really willing to put forth the effort that is.
Even with a handy tool like GM, it still ain't easy.

Yes, Derek Yu used it to make this game, and that's why it's used to mod it.

You could definitely get something done in a year. But Derek has made other games before this, and making one of the same level as Spelunky would probably be a lot more challenging. If you want to learn how to use GM, there are some tutorials linked somewhere around here. I'll try and dig them up for you.

EDIT: Here.

Go away, spend 5 years with Game Maker like I have, then come back here and make a mod.

Quite, depending on what you really want to do. Something simple like adding new items or changing sprites would take virtually no time and little knowledge. The fact you would be modding an existing games code, rather than making your own from scratch, means you could come up with something through experimentation and learn what effects what that way.

Making your own game however, or doing serious changes to Spelunky even, would take considerably longer and a decent understanding of GML.

In short: How do you mod Spelunky? Check out some tutorials if you have no programming knowledge. Look through the code and find something that works similar to what you want to do, then toy with it till you understand how to make it work right. Biggest thing is there will be a lot of trial and error, you'll need to test and rework things often. Even the biggest, most amazing games have stages where many bugs need to be worked out.
