I found a mine shaft under the ocean. It was epic.
(Saw the light from a hole while I was boating across. Even got some diamonds!)

Yeah, Ravines/mineshafts are easy to spot when they're under the ocean. Especially with the new lighting system!

I have a texture pack that disables the underwater overlay. It makes aquatic exploration so much easier.

I know what you mean, but disabling the overlay in combination with upping the brightness to about 50% really makes things much more workable.

No you totally can, mob skins work wit transparency so theres a lot of possibility, but the thing is it has a lot of faces which means a lot to texture and it will probably be layed out very convolutedly
also it looks like it either uses a) really small pixels for each part, b) uses the same texture for multiple polygons, or c) uses more than one texture file, the first two being really bad for skinning and the third not really mattering
