I just found a gamepad the other day, a usb based one that resembled a Playstation controller. It functions, but when I try to change the controls in the spelunky config files, it doesn't pick up any input. Any tips?

Don't use joyconfig, if you want to set up your controls, check this list and set the numbers (in the gamepad.cfg file) accordingly.
