Here's a little something I threw together in Audacity. These files replace the majority of Spelunky's music (cave.ogg, lush.ogg, ice.ogg, and temple.ogg) with level-appropriate ambient sounds. Just drop the files into the "sound" folder in Spelunky's directory. Ambient SpelunkyGive it a try!

Ambient music? I wish I could try this stuff out.. I like ambient music. Although it normally has a creepy touch to it. It "fits" the caves, you say? That makes me want it more...

I may have inadvertently misled you. It's not ambient music; it's ambient sounds that replace the game's music.
So instead of the cheerful chiptune in the caves, you've got moody echoes and dripping noises; the lush area is filled with jungle sounds, etc. It makes the game feel a lot lonelier and more oppressive, I think, although of course you're encouraged to keep the old .oggs around for when you inevitably get tired of it.

This is awesome. I might have to download the program you used to make this and create my own set of tunes.

Do it. You should have Audacity anyway -- it's pretty much the best free audio editing software out there. I thought this little project would be a good opportunity to familiarize myself with some of the features I've never really played with before.

I would like this more if there was sound effects being changed to.

Honestly? I didn't think to change it. I've done so now, however, and you can get the updated version right here: Ambient SpelunkyI still haven't done anything to the title theme, the credits theme, or the perky little victory fanfare, though. I would like this more if there was sound effects being changed to.
Well, that'd be easy enough to do -- this website is a pretty good resource if you need a particular sound effect -- but that's beyond the scope of my little project here. If you'd like to assemble a collection of new sound effects, though, I will cheerfully download the hell out of it.

I find that the vocal sound fx set works well with this. It's like the little Spelunker is saying what he does out loud to contrast the loneliness of the ambient caves.

I like how the temple's ambient sounds are cultists chanting and playing drums.

The box link on that page still works, I've been hosting his soundset ever since the original went down, and will continue for the foreseeable future. It's great, also the first Spelunky 'mod' ever! http://www.box.net/shared/o9ba4fcg1m
