Most of the time you can slip into the exit without being shot and if not, one or two sticky bombs will take care of them.
The problem is not that it is difficult to deal with the shopkeepers; the problem is the fact that it's nigh impossible to get through the game without making them angry at you at some point and triggering permanent shopkeeper hate. They simply get upset far too easily, sometimes even when it isn't the player's fault at all.

I think Spelunky is a very fair roguelike, but this is the one place where it is unfair. The game should not punish the player for having bad luck, but that's exactly what it's doing when a shopkeeper gets hit or killed by some random thing in the level.

I've noticed recently while playing Spelunky that my most common cause of death is angry shopkeeper, despite the fact that I usually try to go for a friendly run and get enough money to buy the ankh. I hardly ever attack the shopkeepers, because I consider it too risky what with their camping out at the end of every level and all.

Unfortunately, shopkeepers are insanely volatile, and the slightest damage to themselves or their shops results in them getting angry at you. I once got the "you'll pay for your crimes" message randomly in the middle of a level, to find an angry shopkeeper at the bottom, near his untouched shop. I got past him without hurting him, but the very next level, the shopkeeper waiting for me got shot by another angry shopkeeper who had popped out of a nearby shop upon noticing me nearby, resulting in shopkeeper death and them hunting me for the rest of the game.

It is my one and only qualm with this game, and it's been bugging me like heck for a while.

tl;dr: Shopkeepers need to stop blaming the player for everything that happens to them.

I've done it everyone! I have BEATEN Spelunky!

I know that you've all probably gotten threads like this before, but I just need to celebrate it, you know?

After over 400 deaths, it's kind of expected that I am trembling with joy.

Even if no one responds to this, I don't care! I am overjoyed!

I have finally joined the ranks of the winners!  Grin

I don't think it's that he's immune to totem spikes. I think it's actually because he doesn't ever come out of the water.

I don't know if I would go through all that trouble for an idol... maybe the big one, yes. But that one? Meh.

It doesn't matter how you learned the trick. The thing is to use it! Who wants to waste a rope?

Just more proof that necessity is the mother of invention.

I love it! Glad you're keeping up the comic, I've read every one before I joined the forum. Great work, I can't wait for the next one!

As far as insta-death goes, we might also want to consider logic for those who feel like the game should be realistic. Would you REALLY surive that shotgun blast to the face? Would you feel fine after being impaled by a field of spikes? Probably not. HOWEVER. I have nothing against a mod that makes Spelunky easier, but we must not forget that a true victory can only be attained in the real Spelunky.

Dear  Spelunky Shopkeeper I am very annoyed with your ridiculous prices. If you DON'T want you and your shopkeeper friends to be killed with your own weapons, then lower your ludicrously inflated prices!

Sincerely,  Spelunky Dude

That was quick... : Die by spikes within 5 seconds of starting a new game
Lady's man : Steal a damsel from a booth
I changed my mind : Make an offering to Kali and then destroy the same altar in one floor
Explosive Frenzy : Have 4 active bombs on screen at the same time
Some of your own medicine : Kill a shopkeeper with his own shotgun
Whip skills : Kill two foes with a single whip attack
Yeti'd : Take damage from a yeti's throw 4 times in a row
How the heck?! : Get hit by an item that richocheted twice off of walls
Live bait : Drop a damsel to set off an arrow trap
Wrong victim : Get an enemy hit by a trap
Icy combo : Kill a yeti by using an alien's death blast
Anti-Spender : Finish the game from area 1 spending no gold
Daredevil : Kill every boss monster type using only whip attacks
Sticky finger - Play through the whole game (and win) with the Shift key constantly held down

I'll think of more later.
(I may have repeated some, since I did not read the entire thread. Please correct me if I have.)
