1  Games / Spelunky Support / STEAM BUG: Infinitely spinning boomerang on: September 23, 2013, 03:12:02 AM
Basically, tried to jump over a Mantrap while holding a boomerang, and when I got eaten, my boomerang stayed spinning, forever.
Not sure if it's relevant, but it was on top of an altar too so the Mantrap was sacrificed after it ate me.
2  Games / Spelunky / Today's Daily Challenge... on: September 07, 2013, 10:30:56 PM
It's.. a repeat?

It is. I remember that arrow trap f**kville at the end of 1-1 and the snake pit then the dark level with a jetpack in the shop. I'm certain, I remember falling and dying on the spikes below when I rushed for the jetpack....

Also, just got to the jungle, and even though I died on 1-3 first time around on this level, I recognized a few other situations from watching Foxman and NL.

Weird, huh?

I've changed sprint to Spacebar and buy to Shift when playing single player, just out of preference, but the rest is default

Co-op on my laptop is a bit more difficult, as I don't have a numpad. I've tried using WASD with E and Q for bombs/ropes and IJKL with U and O, but it's a liiittle crowded.

Terrible modification, whoever made this is an utter jerk.

Aren't you a.....  Cool
5  Games / Spelunky / Do you try the mothership? on: August 26, 2013, 09:17:11 AM
I always do. It's just too tempting, that weapon of absolute destruction. I keep telling myself it's not worth it, but when I get to 4-4, I manage to find some excuse.
And I always die. Every single time. Jetpack, shotgun, bombs, no matter what I have, I find a way to die. This time I narrowly avoided pink painbubbles and a random bomb, only to jump onto the edge of an elevator block as it was passing a ceiling. The wrong edge. The edge with the ceiling. *CRUSH*

So, do you try the mothership?
6  Games / Spelunky / Daily Challenge Discussion [Spoilers, I guess?] on: August 25, 2013, 01:01:29 AM
The Daily Challenge is meant for comparing scores with your friends, right?
But what about swapping stories?
So yeah. Here's a thread thing to discuss Daily Challenges, starting with today 25/8/13!

Did you buy that Compass on 1-2, then find it in the stupid crate in 1-4 (or 1-3?)? Ugh...
Did you guys find today's Udjat Eye? (count yourself lucky if you didn't, tbh, you didn't miss much in the black market -.-)
Did you get caught by one of the billion carnivorous plants on 2-1?
Did you get to the black market, with your fiddy thou, thinking everything's gonna be alright?
Did you see the bomb frog as it got spiked into a shop?
Did you run like hell?
Did you survive the black market?

Did you make it through the ice caves and swap your ankh for the Hedjet? Did you go to the mothership instead of the temple like a big dummy?
Cause I did. Then I got screwed in a corner by plasma bubbles, Mother Alien crosshairs and an angry shopkeeper.

260k tho, so pretty much my best daily challenge.

brotatoe on here obviously, p_assword on steam
Where did you find spelunky?
Found the free version on a list of top indie games or something like that, I believe. Followed a few Spelunky LPers when I heard about the XBLA version and waited patiently-ish for the PC port.
What are your current stats in spelunky (Plays/Wins/losses)
The original was around 1800/20/1780
On Spelunky HD I'm at  184/0/184 now (but only because the one time I beat Olmec and didn't go to hell, I couldn't make it back up the side >_>)

Agh well make that the second consecutive time the Abyss has killed me in a daily challenge. This time I didn't have the Ankh. But I did have the Jetpack. I'm just terrible.
9  Games / Spelunky Support / Re: 'Killed by' glitch. on: August 13, 2013, 03:23:14 AM
The same happened to me with the ghost.
I took a bullet to the face but survived, then a minute or two later, when all the shopkeepers were dead, I died to the ghost and it said I was shot, with the text "I should never have angered that shopkeeper"
10  Games / Spelunky / Re: My first hell run story! *spoilers* on: August 12, 2013, 07:00:51 AM
My first Hell run went a little more smoothly until hell, and a little less smoothly when I reached Hell. I played nice, collecting money and doing some small scale ghost mining, but didn't anger the shop keepers. Managed to buy a Jetpack and a Bomb Box on the mines, then had a Graveyard Jungle before the Black Market. Also found a metric shitton of crates, so I left the Jungle with a Shotgun, Jetpack, and all the bombs in the world. Flying around the Ice Caves, I scored a Kapala and the +8 HP from Kali after I killed myself, so going into the Temple I was still going fine. Breezed through the temple and the City of Gold, bombed 4-4 to oblivion and made it to hell with about 15HP and 20 bombs.
Now, having only played the original Spelunky, and watched a little of the XBLA version, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Hell.
By 5-2 I was down to 12HP and 8 bombs. Found my way down to the exit pretty quickly, and tried to rush in.
Turns out, Blue Devils can jump. And Spike Shoes don't save you from them (they don't even save you from Man Traps in this version too! I found that out the hard way). Got my ass juggled for 12HP by a single enemy, right next to the exit.

Next time, right? :/

11  Games / Spelunky / That Daily Challenge huh? on: August 12, 2013, 06:48:15 AM
Today's daily challenge (12-8-13) was pretty intense, right?
Pretty much the best 1-1 I've ever had: ended with 43k, 16 bombs, 5 health. (could have gotten like 100K if you ghost mined I guess, but I'm a pussy).
Ended the mines with 7HP, more than 100K, ~25 bombs a ton of ropes, Compass, Pitchers Mitt, Mattock and all that jazz
Got to the jungle, bought the Ankh (I figured, screw it, this run is going so well I may as well try for hell, right?), Spike Shoes and a Bomb Box.
I still managed to get back to about 60K by the ice caves (still no ghost mining, because I'm still a pussy). Aaaand then I had the worst two deaths, ever. The first,  the level before the Hedjet Head, I misjudged a jump while trying to get to an altar("pfft, I don't need a rope for this," when I had 20 ropes) and landed hard, got stunned, and thrown into the abyss by a Yeti.

The second, though, was the most painful death ever. After bombing my way past countless crush traps, I made it to Olmec with about 3 bombs left. Got up top, found the climbing gloves, a few bombs, and the mattock. So naturally, I lured Olmec over to one side, and proceeded to dig down with the mattock. It broke, with 1 layer left before the lava. "oh well, good thing I found those bombs!" I dropped a bomb on the ground and started climbing up with my climbing gloves. The bomb exploded, opening a hole into the lava below. The mattock head flew up, fell on poor Carl the Cyclops on the way down and he fell screaming into the lava.

Ended with 161,325, 57th placed, so pretty decent by my standards, but those two deaths were just...  Angry I just seem to have the worst luck (which in Spelunky, means, I get careless) on 4-4. A few days ago I made it to Olmec on another Daily Challenge, only to get trapped in a one block opening with no bombs, and with him right next to me blocking the way out, forcing me to kill myself. Technically I haven't even beaten the game yet, since the one time I did beat Olmec, I went on to Hell instead of completing the game.
So how are you guys' daily challenges going? I notice the top 10 all ended on 4-4 or earlier. Do you guys think that going to Hell on a daily challenge is not worth the risk?

And yeah sorry for the wall of text. Skip to the last 2 paragraphs for the heart-crushing conclusion to my daily challenge.

A replay system.
Maybe just the last 5 or 10 seconds when you die. It would make for some fun gifs.
13  Games / Spelunky / Re: Difficulty- Spelunky Classic vs Spelunky HD on: August 09, 2013, 06:06:34 PM
imo Spelunky HD is harder but I imagine once I get used to the controls and some things I'll be good to go.
One thing that's screwed me over a few times is the bats. I always seem to get hit trying to jump on their heads, even though I'm quite sure I'm above them.

Also there's the new arrow traps, idol traps not being disabled by destroying the ground, and the fact that jumping on mantraps with spike shoes doesn't kill them.  Undecided
14  Games / Spelunky / Re: Secret DLC Characters on: August 09, 2013, 09:40:41 AM
Seems like Cyclops comes from Black Market, bought as hired help. I also found Round girl on the spider Mines, but I don't dare screw around with rushing water, and I haven't reached city of gold yet cause I'm trash.
15  Games / Spelunky / Re: What new features does Steam Spelunky have? on: August 09, 2013, 09:07:04 AM
That's exactly how I found the two DLC characters I've unlocked so far. I had already unlocked the character from the mines when the round girl's coffin showed up, so I think that's how it always is.

I did think it was a nice touch that the option to purchase the Cyclops was labelled 'Bother Carl'. He was $10,000 for me. I guess that's pre-determined too.

So the Robot is in the spaceship? Has anyone found any other DLC chars?

I had a strange run where I bought Brother Carl in the black market to unlock him, killed him because he was running around with a boomerang, then found him again on the first level of the ice caves? Even weirder, I died on that level (no statue head) and respawned with my Ankh, and had two Brother Carls on the next level.

As for other DLC chars, someone on the leaderboards has the viking guy. Thematically, I'd say he's somewhere in the Ice Caves, but I haven't found him yet.
