I apologise for the ridiculous name, I couldn't think of anything good in the 24 hours I gave myself.
http://www.forgottenplanet.com/caillan/SunsOfDaxyus.exeAs you can probably tell from the screenshot, it's a tower defense game. I wanted to see if I could make a decent one in 24 hours, and I think I did an okay job.
You see, I don't really like tower defense games, but I think like most genres I don't like it's because most games make the same set of mistakes over and over again and sort of lose sight of where the appeal comes from. This is why I decided when I started that the game would be about adapting a setup to counter wildly varying threats rather than finely tuning a setup until you get something that works every time. This led to me making the following decisions:
--The towers should be finely balanced against each other. They don't need to be precisely equal, but each class of towers needs to have its own niche, and incomparables need to be handled carefully.
--No upgrades or refunds on towers, forcing "now vs later" to be a meaningful decision the game frequently throws at the player.
--Enemies have randomised stats which are not known until they actually show up. This means actually paying attention to what's happening in game rather than building your ideal setup, then taking a nap. This forces you to have a different setup on each playthrough.
I hope you enjoy my take on tower defense.
