Like somebody else posted on Derek's twitter: I also bought a Vita only to have something to play Spelunky forever. I will blindly buy the next game Derek puts out. But am convinced he will not be able to surpass Spelunky. You can't improve on perfection.
2  Games / Spelunky / Re: Spelunky does what Super Mario Kart Don’t on: February 15, 2014, 11:24:22 AM
For the Super Mario Kart thing I already owned an Xbox 360, and there wasn't much more I needed in terms of games. But I really did want to play SMK, so if I bout a Wii, it would be because of that game. Now I rarely play games any more. The only game I missed was Spelunky so I bought a Vita just because of that. But I see the Vita has turned into a goto place for indie games. So I think I'm definitely going to be playing other indie games like Fez, Steamwolrd Dig, and Limbo. I love me some modern twists on the old school 2d platform games.

I noticed I play Spelunky better on the Vita. I've reached Olomec three times already and was very close to beating him. I find it easier to focus on what is going on in the entire screen whereas on XBLA I was playing about 8 ft away from a 52" LCD and was easier surprised from stuff that was far from my spelunker. Also being forced to hold the vita close to myself automatically makes me concentrate on the game more. I'm focused all the time now, whereas before I had to force myself to focus. That vita screen is gorgeous! And a good size too! I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

One thing though. I got some major slowdown on an ice cave level that was snowing. That was a let down because I never witness slowdown on the Xbox360. I've since seen another snowing level and that one played without a hitch.

A couple years ago I contemplated getting a Wii just to play Super Mario Kart. I was extremely close to pulling the trigger but never did. I could not bring myself to buy a system to play a single game (already had an Xbox). Well my Xbox died nearly a year ago, and my interest in video games had been on a steady decline. I have not missed it at all, except for one thing. Spelunky.

Yesterday I bit the bullet an bought a used White PS Vita Assassins’ Creed combo and proceeded to install Spelunky. (I couldn’t care less about AC at this point.) Spelunky is truly is the only video game I need. And now with daily challenge! I need to find a place where I can watch regular Joes trying the daily challenge. Watching people do ghost runs and spend 30 minutes at 1-1 is not entertaining.  Anyway I now have all the Spelunky goodness in the glove compartment of my car! Happy me. I wish I would run into a similarly enlightened person to try the LAN multiplayer. Let’s see if I can beat Olemec this time. I got to 4-4 a few times on XBLA but never beat him.

I’m dreading having to do the frickin’ key run again!
4  Games / Spelunky / Congrats on Game of the Year! And few questions… on: January 27, 2014, 07:59:22 AM
Wow, there is hope for the gaming press after all. I could not agree more the GOTY accolade.

A few questions:
1. Are there any plans for porting Spelunky to the Mac platform? How about PS4 and Xbox One?
2. Is the daily challenge cross platform? Is the same level seeded to the PS3, Vita, and PC platforms?
3. Unlike any other game out in the last decade, for me personally Spelunky is timeless. With that in mind I’m curious to know if the daily challenge thing is something that can run automated on a cheap server where it would still be available 7-10 years from now. Or is it something expensive to run that will get shut down in 3 years like the EA games servers?
5  Games / Spelunky / Suggestion: Kickstarter to port Spelunky to Xbox One & PS4 on: June 17, 2013, 01:33:28 PM
Dear Derek,
Please start a Kickstarter to port Spelunky to Xbox One and PS4. I have not made a decision on which to get, and thinking I won’t be able to play Spelunky makes me not want to move on to the next generation of consoles. (I have a Mac, no PC, and even if I had one I much prefer to play on console.) I’d ask for a Spelunky sequel but that would take too much time and I NEED Spelunky before I can purchase a next gen console.

Kickstarter is perfect venue to find out if there is enough demand for these ports, plus I would like to throw money at you for making what I consider the most BRILLIANT game ever, and the Kickstarter pledge levels are perfect for that.

I do video editing so I can help you with the video you need to start a Kickstarter project.
6  Games / Spelunky / Re: New DLC! on: February 21, 2013, 03:15:13 AM
First let me get this out of the way: I think you're a genius Derek. I could write a very long list of why Spelunky is its own category of video games, but to cut it short I'll just say this game is simply genius and could only have been conceived by someone gifted (and very hard-working).

If we add new areas to the singleplayer game or online multiplayer it will be a free Title Update and not paid DLC. Those are core features that I'd want everyone to play the game with.

In my opinion DLC should be for fun extras. Smiley
That is a very noble position I wish you hadn't taken. I say this because the end result of that philosophy was 2 pieces of DLC the add no value to me personally. And I want more Spelunky on Xbox! All this DLC has done for me is it prompted me to research if it is possible to "gift" XBLA games. I see that it is now possible, so I will support Mossmouth by purchasing a download code for a friend. Spreading some Spelunky love will be a better use of my $.

Thanks again for creating this revolutionary videogame.

Congrats on finishing the game bro!!! Grin
Edit: That "complete the game without collecting gold" achievement is going to be harder than going through hell, I swear Sad
You should get your head examined if you are seriously considering doing this. Huh? Just leave it be; This game was not meant to have all achievements collected.
8  Games / Spelunky / Re: I'm an idiot. *endgame spoilers* on: July 25, 2012, 01:44:40 PM
Hehe. Good luck!!!

Yeah I was shaking too when I finally completed the key run. I hadn't that kind of pressure playing a video game since my teenage years. I don't think I can handle hell. I might have a stroke if I reach hell and die. Heck, even if my spelunker does survive hell I might not.

Good luck again on your hell run, you are certainly braver than I am.

That is god awful man. Angry I just recently opened the last shortcut so getting to hell is still not remotely on my mind. I want to finish 4-4 and visit all the other secret areas before attempting a hell run. (Who am I kidding, I doubt I'll ever get to see a hell level unless someone posts a youtube video.)
10  Games / Spelunky / Re: Finally completed the key run! on: July 23, 2012, 08:00:21 AM
I only ever played about 2 minutes from the tutorial of the PC version. This was after playing the XBLA version so I couldn’t stand the graphics and keyboard. Anyway, this tune definitely sounded like a chip tune. Man this Derek fellow is  very into random stuff. So are there any secret areas associated with getting a chip tune? Is there a way to unlock them and have them as an option to have them play all the time?
11  Games / Spelunky / Finally completed the key run! on: July 23, 2012, 07:05:23 AM
It took me 162 deaths. I now see what everyone says about the temple being easier is you arrive fully equipped from starting at 1-1. The temple is more difficult than I remembered it from by brief visits from the ice caves shortcut. So how do I kill Anubis if I started in 4-1? Or is it just not possible? I’m trying to lure him into a tiki trap but so far I’ve not been able to. I think it may not be possible to complete the temple using the shortcut unless I rob a shop. Anyone have stat on the probablilty of a spawning a shop in the temple? I think shops are fewer in between as you progress through the later levels; but it very well could be that I explore less the later levels because they are too risky to wander about.

Also yesterday I got a new tune in a jungle level. I had never heard it before. It was decidedly more creepy and less instrumented. It sounded more like a midi tune from for some old PC game. Was this a tune imported directly from the PC version? I wonder why it had never played before.
12  Games / Spelunky / Re: Game strat on: July 20, 2012, 10:45:22 AM
The key run did take me a while and was such a relief, but i see no point in even using shortcuts, i only used them to get to the level events like haunted castle, worm ect, to unlock the characters. Beyond that i only ever start from the beginning.
I think they will be worth it to get practice on the temple and also for the secret areas like you mentioned. Also, I figure if I open the last shortcut I can have a go at the temple in multiplayer. (Though I don’t know anyone who would play with me). But is sure is a heck of challenge having to carry that key around. I’m thinking after I’m done with the key the game will be actually a lot easier because I will be able to pack the shotgun instead of the damned key.
13  Games / Spelunky / Re: Game strat on: July 20, 2012, 06:53:24 AM
Just wanted to drop by and tell all of you to go $%#! yourselves. Wink
Discussing getting to hell and such when I STILL CAN’T GET THAT DAMNED KEY PAST 3-4! Angry

I was close though: I fell into the abyss with it on 3-4. Hopefully it won’t be much longer…
14  Games / Spelunky / Re: Patch suggestions on: July 19, 2012, 08:15:33 AM
In light of me being schooled in the ludicrous amount of money Microsoft asks for recertifying a game after a patch, the most important patch suggestion then becomes:

1.Work for at least 6 months on the patch so it is a mammoth patch. Gamers that passed on the game due to difficulty are not coming back due to a patch anyway so there is no rush. The more fixes/features  you can put in the better. Those gamers will take another look at the demo when the game drops to $5. (They can’t ignore the rave reviews, so this game will always be in their back burner).

As for gameplay patch suggestions, here is what I have:

2. I emphatically support all the claims that the darkness needs to be toned down. More so because you can’t carry another item while holding the torch. If the designer does not want to increase the torch radius, these are some other options to consider: A) The torch is carried on the other hand, when you press X you use/throw whatever you are carrying. If you are carrying nothing extra you throw the torch. B) All dark areas spawn a new shop type right next to the entrance. There you can buy 4 different tiers of a firefly matrix to be spread evenly throughout the level.  The most expensive one ($10,000) will create a matrix so dense that it would be similar to having a fully lit level. These fireflies emit a green glow to distinguish them from the original ones. They need to be differentiated because they net you considerably less gold. Each green firefly you collect gives you its equivalent cost back, so that if you were to collect them all after spending $10,000 you would recover the full amount back.  When you make a purchase, you see an animation of the fireflies spreading out evenly throughout the level. As they are spreading, they go through walls like the psychic blasts.

3. Again, I empathically support all claims that the shopkeepers should not be angered by stuff happening offscreen, and that have nothing to do with the player. Suggestions #2 and #3 fix what I feel are cheap deaths that the game unjustly dishes out at you. These issues  somewhat discredit the whole game. Kali should not be angered by non-player events also.

4. I really think the honeycomb and ice tiles should to be redone. They are too blocky and the art is poor compared to the rest of the game. They stand out as poor quality in an otherwise beautiful game.

5. A way to unequip/equip ANY piece of active equipment you own. Catcher’s mit and stickybombs especially.

6. Scepter and teleporter misfires should do 2 hearts of damage, not instakill. Otherwise all the effort that the developer put in creating these items was wasted because they will not get used.

7. Implement a post game summary: At the end of every run, a sideways bar chart animates to summarize the run. The bar starts at 1-1 and ends at 5-4. (To further taunt us players who will never see hell). Or it starts at the corresponding shortcut you took, but all 20 levels are always displayed. (this may require three horizontal lines, one for 1-1- to 2-4, one for 3-1 to 4-4, and one the last one for hell. As the bar is animating, you see how much $ and which items you picked up in each level. It also show $ spent and items that were left behind. Finally it shows the hearts, ropes, and bombs at the start and end of a level. Most likely it would take up the entire screen, but you would have a record to study your entire run. It would be the Spelunky equivalent of a play by play summary from  American football. These post game summaries can be saved to your hard drive and you can download the summaries from the leaderboard too.

That is all I have for now. Some of these changes make the game tiny bit easier, but I feel it they are just common sense.  So what if these changes make the ultra elite 1% percent of players complete the game more frequently? But it would give the other 99% of us more incentive to try to get to hell; because for the average gamer, at the moment the prospect of getting to hell seems so unachievable that we aren’t even motivated to try.
15  Games / Spelunky / Re: Don't say "Patch me"! on: July 18, 2012, 07:11:53 AM
Are you a developer Bae? Can you explain how the patching on XBLA is “expensive”? Or at least link an article to that effect? I looked through two pages of your older posts and didn’t see the “debates” thread you mention, so please educate me.

I am new here and I’m not liking the vibe on this forum: There’s too much “no need to change the game” going on here. What are we here to discuss then? Tips & tricks? Our awesome runs? This is the developer’s forum, not a fan site. I’m a fan of the game, but I would like to see it improved further and expanded. Most of the criticisms here, ESPECIALLY the one ones on the patch suggestions thread, were well thought out and written in a constructive manner. This is good information for the developer to have and evaluate, regardless of whether Derek concurs something is an issue or not.

And I for one, would never play this on PC so  I would sad to see the game get supported only on PC. I’ve also commonly heard some developers complain that publishing to PC is less profitable than console (due to rampant piracy) but I don’t know if Steam changes that. I’d be interested in hearing more on this subject from experienced developers. Also while we are on this subject, was there a way to donate money Derek & company during all the time Spelunky existed on PC only? Have the PC version fans so far been supporters or freeloaders?
