Sorry for the necro, but this mod just got a big update!
Can you list the changes please? That would really help. Smiley

Sure! The full post from the author is here:

...and the changelog

- Fred is now a playable character, as well as continuing to be Froobsel (Fred x Fred otp)
- Invisible / Low Opacity UI, because that shit is so annoying and hides spiders and other nasty things otherwise :c
- Cleaned up all the text and art bugs that were reported to me, and cleaned up already made things
(buttboulder has been fixed up and looks nicer now, for example)
- Added new flavor text
- Added lots of new art, from super noticeable things to smaller details
- A large enemy character(s) have been replaced
- I am now your Tunnel guide (: Someone suggested it and I thought it was a lovely idea.
- A lot of people requested I add things to hell. I kinda did. But only if you try an eggplant run.
- You can now properly sacrifice things to Reggie. You will see what I mean when you play.

I can do a short post explaining how if people want!
Do it!
I'll do it! Tongue

Those text files I talked about related to fan translating the game? They're available in ASCII format in <where you've installed Spelunky>\Spelunky\Data\Localization\ . The files themselves are .PCT formats, so in order to alter its text, open it in Notepad.

These files were originally intended for localization purposes, but they can be used to alter game text as to make it resemble the mod you had in mind.

Darn, beat me to it!

Want to add something important, however. There are some invisible line separators in some of the strings, that if you accidentally delete when editing text, it will break some of the messages (they will display as ERROR:STRING_NOT_FOUND). So when editing, start from the middle of the part you want to edit, and backspace to the beginning of it. Do not just highlight the part you want to edit and erase or you might snag this divider. Example:

IDS_LEVEL_OLMECOLM[put cursor here and backspace]EC'S LAIR

The text on this game is very trivial to the experience, and I think it would be a waste of time to do something like this.

I totally disagree, the text adds a lot to the experience! You're right that it's not necessary for the core gameplay and mechanics, but I love the detail it adds in regards to death messages and event happenings and such.

Just out of curiosity, do people not know how to edit the in-game text for their mods? It's very easy to do, and I noticed a few themed mods could really do with some text editing, such as the Mario Bros one. I edited the text in the Vinesauce Mod in the OP, I can do a short post explaining how if people want!

Oh, and if you wanted to add it to the compendium, the author is NotSoSerious.

I stream at a website called Vinesauce, which has tons and tons of inside jokes. One of our talented artist viewers made this mod, which has loads of custom textures and text. Replace the .wads with the ones in the textures folder, and replace the strings.pct in the localization folder.

I don't think any of you will get any of the jokes, but the artist did a fantastic job on the mod, and hopefully you will enjoy it anyway!

I'd love a mod where you can just edit the various texts that pop up.

@Xero: I've beat Hell a fair number of times, and many of those times I had very few bombs. Once I remember even having zero bombs starting from Olmec, and I still went through and beat Yama! I can't give very sound advice without actually watching you play, but I would recommend working a bit more on your early conservation of them, perhaps. And don't shrug off the bombs you can buy in early shops in hope that the Black Market will be packed with them, I recommend buying up all the bombs you can early on if you have any extra money.

Anyone know what the updated spectacles do? I just spent the last two hours playing, only got spectacles once (probably just awful luck on my end). This COULD be a total freak coincidence, but the shopkeep on a level aggro'd immediately upon entering the next THREE levels in a row afterwards, then I died before I could tell any discernible difference in the spectacles. Sad

Like others, I am pretty bummed out that those high scores on the leaderboards are now untouchable, practically speaking.

Derek doesnt give much notice on these things. After we knew Spelunky Xbla was coming out he didn't announce release until 4 days before it came out

A bit of an exaggeration, it was more like 10 days. But yeah, not long at all. It was the same with Fez. First the cover art came out, then the game came shortly after.

There has been a lapse in activity on these forums developer wise, so I was wondering what you guys think they were doing.

Does anyone know if a patch is officially on the way?
And I know it may be early... but that 'Download Content' option on the main menu sure is foreboding... Wink

They have said they're working on the title update (first patch/update). Bug fixes and a few small changes (buffed spectacles confirmed IIRC). I think I also remember Andy saying that they have some solid DLC ideas. So no worries, it'll happen eventually.

Or the opposite, you can create your own plotline each play. So when you die say something like, "I'm sorry father.....eeehhh (dead)".

Unfortunately I think most of us just skip the intro after a short time, it would be nice if it started after you begin a game, but that would take a re-write of the opening.

Eh, if people wanna skip it they should have the option to skip it, rather than being forced to sit through it every time. I personally read it every time though, I love the combinations it comes up with.

^Fair enough. Still doubt there's any kind of deeper secret regarding the eggplant though.

How is it a reference to Kid Icarus? What? Just because of those eggplant wizards? Ice climbers has eggplants too...

Anyway, I kinda doubt it does much else, but go nuts looking, it would be nice if there is something else.

I guess my logic is that being an unforgiving platformer with projectiles and an upgrade system, Kid Icarus is a closer relative than Ice Climbers is to Spelunky. But you're right, could be that too.
