I think my first words after seeing a ton of zombies and walking skeletons would be more along the lines of "Holy shit!"

Here you go!

I also added it to the re-uploading mods thread, not like anyone's gonna see it though I guess

Hey StickArtist! Unfortunately the forums are almost completely devoid of life now. You should check out the spelunky reddit, I think it's supposed to be active at least.

1. Not sure where you're getting the numbers from, by my estimates, its just under 40cm, which isn't bad considering sawed off shotguns could be under 18inches (roughly 45 cm) the gun is longer then spelunker is tall.

2. You pull a trigger with your index finger. At least most people do.

It's not really shrunk down, the monsters are pretty big, the trees could be saplings possibly. Also the shield he carries is oversized, as is the shotgun I think.

I'm glad someone actually did this.
Thanks! I was expecting a lot more negativity when I posted this. It's on reddit too, they mostly complained about its wall like qualities, cause when I copied it over it messed up my paragraphs.

But still, I was expecting more people asking why would you even do this. Or proving me wrong, doubtful I covered every possible base that I needed to.

Heres a small bonus theory I ended up debunking

As for his agility, I considered a theory that the cave air is much denser denser then air at sea level. More O's (should be an O2 but I cant do a superscript thing on my phone) should help him preform superhuman feats of endurance. It would also potentially mean that the bugs could be much larger. The issue being if there was too much oxygen it would be toxic to humans. And the amount would have to drastically increase to account for man sized spiders.

Another issue would be why is the air denser, we could maybe call it magic, but it would be more likely a combination of higher air pressure, colder temperatures and a decrease in water vapor.
While the caves are below sea level, especially on the 1st level, it wouldn't account for a change drastic enough to result in much change. Not to mention a large increase in air pressure isn't healthy for a spelunker. In the temple and beyond, we definitely could see how it might be fairly dry. But the jungle and ice caves have enough water to be rather humid. (Water vapor affecting air density is all about Avogadro and mol stuff) and again we might see colder temperatures in the ice caves but the jungle would need to be warm enough to sustain the plant life. And of course hell and the temple would be rather warm. So the water vapor present and temperature are rather inconsistent throughout the cave.
Wow, that was almost long enough to write another essay about.

While I was staving off dehydration induced hallucinations deep in the Australian outback, I realized that Spelunker would have no problem taking down the kangaroo I had just taken a beating from. As I often do post-marsupial beat down, I started to think about Spelunky. The Spelunker is a total übermensch, he preforms an incredible vertical and his running speed would make The Flash jealous. However I realized I didn't know how fast he actually was. Upon arriving home, I fired my travel agent, and set out to work finding Spelunker's speed. "But Chris" you might be saying "the title says this is about his height." Well reader, my name isn't Chris, so please don't call me that. And aside from that you are correct. My first step in calculating speed was finding out how large each pixel in the game was, upon finding that out, I found his height and decided that, this is too much work to keep going to find out his speed anyways, also his height is so mind blowing you won't even care about his speed afterwards anyways.

The biggest issue in finding the size of a pixel, was finding an item to get my bearings on. I couldn't use Spelunker and assume he was of average height, because his proportions aren't even close to normal. I considered shotguns, assuming I could find a similar model, and the dinosaur bones, which I'd need to find the species for and then know if he was fully grown or a juvenile. Then it hit me. Quite literally really, a skeleton popped to life at my feet and hit me (in the game you silly head). While I mentioned that we can't use Spelunker's body size as average his head would still be of normal size. Allow me to explain, people with dwarfism often times have heads that are normal sized, though they appear proportionally larger on them, the reasoning is that your head doesn't have growth plates like your limbs do, so while your body may not grow due to dwarfism, your head would normally be of average size. There are some people with smaller heads but generally they have average sized domes. This was reinforced by the Spelunker having a head size that is pretty close to the skulls from the game. I then counted the pixels on the skull, compared to the average size of a human skull (17.5 if I recall right) to give me the size of a pixel, which was .7608 cm per pixel, at my current resolution (different resolutions will give you a different cm to pixel ratio but the height should come out the same). Spelunker's hat adds some height to the little fella, so I opted to use meatboy instead. I carefully aligned them, and meatboy came up to right about where spelunker's head should end. Its difficult to know perfectly, but it was close enough that they seem to be intended to be the same height. Upon calculating his height, I arrived at a number that is pretty darn short, a whopping 33cm tall. At first glance this seems like non-sense, theres no way that anyone could be that short. He would beat the shortest man recorded by about 20 centimeters. He would be shorter then a newborn baby in fact. However while this seems implausible, it could theoretically happen, a human could be that small (babies mostly) however he shouldn't be adventuring in a cave if he's so small. This would mean that Spelunker has dwarfism, and he's got it bad.

Since the other characters sport similar heights, it seems unlikely that they could all posses the same genetic mutation. Unless they all came from the same region. Because of something called a bottleneck. While there may be 1 person with dwarfism on an island out of 1000, the percentage is relatively low, only .1% of the population. However if someone comes along and murders everyone in their sleep, and only 10 people survive, including our short friend, then the population would be made up of 10%little people. So a natural disaster or very large mass murder of some kind can result in a society having a higher percent of people with certain traits, in an extreme case possibly resulting in a society of people all possessing that trait. So it becomes plausible that the people who live around (also in) the cave all have dwarfism.
The biggest issue, is that if Spelunker were to stand at a proud 5 feet tall. It would mean that the spiders in the game would be gigantic. Insects (locust in the temple also bees) and arachnids (spiders) breathe through pores in their skin. Due to the square cube rule, if a spider goes through a proportional increase in size, it's new volume is equal to the cube of the multiplier while the surface area is only equal to the square of the multiplier, so the rate at which his volume grows vastly outpaces the increase in surface area, meaning that he would be unable to breathe enough oxygen through his skin to account for all of his new mass. So all the spiders, locus, and bees would suffocate if they were as big as a grown man. If Spelunker is really that short, then it becomes much more believable, although still farfetched. Additionally giant bats would be unable to fly with their new mass. And the bees would be double screwed, suffocated and grounded.

More evidence is given with the greatest character in the game, the pug. A pug tends to be around 12-14 inches tall which is perfect given that our vertically challenged Spelunker is about the same size, too bad there isn't a great dane damsels, he could ride it into battle. More evidence stems from the backgrounds of the temple, there are drawings of people with proportions that seem to be about normal. So you can't argue that it's just a style. Everyone in the world is probably his height. The drawings clearly show people (jackal headed people) of normal proportions. Meaning Spelunker is an anomaly. Additionally the mummy in the temple towers over him, though I estimate his size to be around 2.5 feet. Making this a toddler mummy. Which is appropriate seeing as all he does is spit up at you.

So there you have it, our beloved Spelunker needs a ladder just to reach the top shelf. But hey, its just a theory, an indie game theory (game theory is a wonderful youtube series). I also recalled people noticing the damsel's breasts were too big when the cover art was released. I decided to investigate. After an hour of looking at boobs on the internet I forgot about the project.
