1  Games / Spelunky Classic / Re: THE BALL & CHAIN IS AWESOME on: October 30, 2009, 01:41:24 PM
My first encounter with the ball and chain was on purpose. And then I died because I fell onto a vertical space and was on one side, while the ball was on the other side. I couldn't move =[

Steep difficulty can be appealing. Take the case of indie action-adventure title Spelunky, where the sense of discovery and achievement is maximized by stiff odds. "I think that a tough challenge can make a game much more enjoyable," said creator Derek Yu. "Don't we feel the most fulfilled when we overcome something difficult? Without that feeling of getting better, a game turns into a chore - something that you do as a distraction rather than something you do for fulfillment."

The key to effective difficulty, as opposed to frustration that's just frustrating, is all in the implementation. "Doing something hard isn't fun in and of itself," said Yu. " It's not fun to sit in an empty room and try to balance a ball on your head for 10 hours straight. To make challenge effective, you have to provide an interesting game world and create deep mechanics that are entertaining to play with and very satisfying to master."

Derek Yu's Spelunky (at top) is easily the best example, and where all discussion of the indie embrace of procedural generation needs to start. Taking the Rogue formula and applying it to the 8-bit platformer genre, Spelunky's enduring power and charm (having been finessed for nearly a year, and only just now hitting its 1.0 release) is its ability to create "situations" rather than rote level layouts.

(Yeah, I'm aware this is entirely obvious...)

Hey! Those sprites were made by me, well technically Derek, but I uploaded them. I'm glad you guys like them though and hopefully Derek will implement them into the site itself so you don't have to copy all the links.
*looks around* I never claimed it was mine Arucard! Don't hurt me!

As some of you may have known, there's been an invasion at 7-11! The lovable Dōmo-kun has landed and took over a slurpee drink (Fuji Apple), has his own collection of three cups, his own coffee cups, brownines, and even hot dog boxes! I bought a few things and want to share them with you all (Also, I'm very squee right now <3)

Congrats. You know, 1 more save and 2 more kills, and you would have gotten 3 out of 4 achievements in one run. Tongue

What's the maximum number of shops that can spawn in the game?  Can you get one on every level 2..15, or is there a lower limit?
It's a random chance. You could get one after another for several levels, or never see any at all, just like for damsels. I don't know if it's possible to get a shop on every level or on zero levels (I usually die before I can find out though).
13  Games / Spelunky Classic / Re: Jetpack lifespan? on: September 27, 2009, 03:04:13 AM
Yeah. I mean how many times can you press the jump button before you have to recharge.

Don't think of it as how many jumps, it's a duration. You can have one long jump (press and hold it) and run out fast, or a lot of short bursts and be airborn longer. What you should test is how many seconds it is and get use to it. (below a ledge that is 2 spaces above the floor, for instance, when failing will not crater you)

haha, then I put chtulu in the mess and all goes haywire.
Cthulhu! Know the name of the Elder Ones! That and Shoggoth, which is also on the game. Who else? I don't know. Hydra is not the Lovecraftian Hydra Tongue

- Crates that take a bomb or rope to get to are always worth the risk. Sometimes, even up to two items wasted, as you typically find 3x rope or 3x bomb (but it sucks wasting 2 rope to find 3 bombs, and then you need rope)
- Rocks hurt.
- Arrows hurt. Twice as much as rocks.
- The damsel has 4 HP, but almost everything does only 1 point of damage. However, she is frail so don't be throwing stuff at her.
- Parachute is the least useful crate item. It has helped before, but not often enough.
- Web Gun can get you almost anywhere if you have the time.
- Machete cuts things, like webs, and enemies!
