Title: YASM - Realistic Spelunky
Post by: Sudonimus on February 23, 2010, 03:34:56 PM
Okay, now that I've made a cheesy graphic and message mod (go to the Spelunky forums and look for "Encryption"), I just got a great mod idea that I hope hasn't already been posted!

God, I always make the IDEAS before the actual mod... But you'll be seeing this someday! I haven't a chance to work on it for now since school JUST STARTED AGAIN (great timing, eh?) but you will see it! I promise!

What I'm doing is making it so that the game is practical, and realistic. (For example, the Damsel kissing you. Is a kiss really all it takes to win a life?)

List of Stuff To Do or Have Done...
The Shopkeeper. Okay. You guys may not like this, but it's what this mod's about. The shopkeeper is an old man, so I'm taking away his throwing abilities and making it into a push. (That shouldn't stun you though.)
Mushrooms. I know someone is doing this, I'm going to make this simple. Picking up a mushroom lets you eat it. You need, say, 6 to get a life point. A magic mushroom gets you one health on the spot. This one thing branches out to a ton of other stuff, like...
Health. There's a Hunger Timer involved. Every... say 50 seconds you lose a life point for being hungry. Of course, mushrooms still give you life. It's just... less mushrooms in Ice levels and Restless Dead levels. There are also Poisonous Mushrooms, which make you sick. They have a faded color or a pale color compared to the regular mushrooms. Sickness is an acceleration to your Hunger Timer, say... 20 seconds. Vampire Bites also make you sick. Which branches to...
The Damsel. Kissing is all it takes to get a life point? Thinking of realistic-ness, when Damsel is rescued, instead of kissing you, she heals you from sickness if you have sickness. (Oh, ****, I have to find a DAMSEL to do that? No.) You can also look for medicine in shops.
Stomps. You guys'll probably hate me for this too. In real life, stomping on snakes and killing them is kind of hard, since snakes are really thin and easy to miss from jumping. So stomps will be deactivated for enemies except: Humanoids, Yeti King and all the big bosses, spider, UFO's and aliens, monkeys, Jiang Shi and Vampire, and Skeleton. If I could, I'll make it so that you only miss 4 of 5 times for the other enemies.
Guns. In real life, a bullet would kill you most times. (Unless they aimed REALLY BADLY.) So in this mod, a bullet will be worth 2 life points. In real life, guns do not have infinite ammunition. Each gun will get, like 12 shots to start with. (Not bullets, SHOTS.) Shells can be found at shops, or in crates. And once ammo runs out for a gun, you can throw the gun.
Some movement stuff. Fliphangs are slower. And after running for a certain amount of time, you start walking until you get more energy. (Like stamina, basically.)
Suicide. You cannot kill yourself using Esc+F1. That doesn't make any sense in real life at all. But you can still wait for the ghost to come up or something if you're stuck. You can kill yourself any other way but Esc+F1.
Honestly, Physics. Not DEFYING physics. Stuff like gravity, friction, and buoyancy (*hint hint* Spelunker sinks.)
Etc. Jetpack has 1000 fuel once you hit the ground.

Realistic Spelunky?

That would have to be first person point of view for one. Real people have a frist person point of view.

Title: Re: YASD - Realistic Spelunky
Post by: Kegluneq on February 23, 2010, 07:46:04 PM
And can't jump any more than about half their height.

Title: Re: YASD - Realistic Spelunky
Post by: marsgreekgod on February 23, 2010, 08:27:09 PM
And bats and spiders wouldn't attack them, as for everything but them? basicly not around. (it wouldn't be realistic to have caveman living down there would it)_

Title: Re: YASD - Realistic Spelunky
Post by: Kegluneq on February 23, 2010, 09:23:34 PM
Yea, you're going to need to redefine "realistic" for us.

Title: Re: YASD - Realistic Spelunky

Somebody should make teleportation spelunky.

Somebody should make teleportation spelunky.
What do you mean?

Didn't keg already do that? for you?

Title: Re: YASD - Realistic Spelunky
Post by: AresRomanGod on February 23, 2010, 09:38:09 PM
Like yours. Except jump is used to teleport, and you can teleport random directions.

Title: Re: YASD - Realistic Spelunky
Post by: Kegluneq on February 23, 2010, 10:00:20 PM
Sounds fun. You're going to have to elaborate on this for me some time. Not here though, 'cause we're starting to steal Sudo's thread.

Title: Re: YASD - Realistic Spelunky
Post by: gummybears123 on February 23, 2010, 10:40:29 PM
Sudo's only changing reasonable stuff, not like jump height to half of Spelunker's height or anything

Realistic Spelunky?

That'd be... AWESOME. Someone make this mod.

Title: Re: YASD - Realistic Spelunky
Post by: Sudonimus on February 24, 2010, 10:47:54 AM
Yeah... I'm trying to make it so that some of it makes sense, but not so much that it wouldn't be Spelunky anymore.

First person view would be 3D, right?

Title: Re: YASD - Realistic Spelunky
Post by: gummybears123 on February 24, 2010, 10:53:00 AM
Yea, Spelunky's third person

Title: Re: YASD - Realistic Spelunky
Post by: marsgreekgod on February 24, 2010, 10:57:49 AM
well you could make a 2d frist person game, it would just be really odd.

I... don't believe it.
Anyways I updated my list, and am working on it starting today.

Idea for Mushrooms:

Magic mushrooms!

When you eat one, you gain 1 health point. You also are have a short hallucination, probably just a bunch of purple colours as an overlay on the screen for a few seconds, that makes it harder to see things.
Perhaps you can include an under-the-hood level/stat sort of thing that determines whether you will have a hallucination or not, depending on how many magic mushrooms you have had.
But, if you eat too many at a time, say, 3 of these mushrooms in 30 seconds, you will get a penalty of one health and an extended hallucination. This might also make you less prone to hallucinations, if you decide to include the stat that determines if you have a hallucination.

I also think eating mushrooms should be a gamble, because then it might make the game unbalanced or too easy. By gamble, I mean that all types of mushrooms look the same and your probability of picking a mushroom is totally randomised.

I would prefer this option, as a player than having too few mushrooms scattered through a level.

Oh yeah, I should add something:
Poison mushrooms have a slightly faded color from regular mushrooms.
And as for the magic mushrooms:
They'll be purple.

And as for the magic mushrooms:
They'll be purple.

YES YES YES!

Thank you! It's now time to play Spelunky the way it should be!
(A possible sequel would be Spelunky 2: Rehab)

Rehab being...?

Rehabilitation after being addicted to mind-affecting shrooms.

Psych? Being...?
(OH **** I'M AT IT AGAIN)

If there were a sequel to this mod, it woulud be the Nonsense Spelunky Mod. Which is the opposite of Realistic Spelunky. Like, say you can fly.

Or something like anti-gravity, or no gravity... like space.....

(I'm gonna do that once I finish my current one ONCE A CERTAIN PERSON GIVES ME PRO SO I CAN TEST MY CURRENT ONE *AHEM AHEM IPWN AHEM*)

Title: Re: YASM - Realistic Spelunky

Or maybe a Physics Mod.
Not completely realistic, but physics get altered a lot.
Like some regions gravity is reversed, you can go back in time...

Hmm, maybe you could rewind to the point before you did the action that caused your death after you die, using a "Rewind(which you have a limited amount of)," and also using a "Rewind" to get yourself unstuck...
...
That would be epic.

I know this is kind of a bump, but you could merge this with my darkness mod for extreme realism.

I like this idea. This idea is evil.

This makes me happy.

I like this idea. This idea is evil.

This makes me happy.
I would make the circle surrounding the Spelunker bigger.

When I play dark levels, I feel really trapped. It's uncomfortable.
But good idea! This would be great!

But I'll just say that either this or the Physics Mod is on Super-Haitus.

Should it be the Physics mod or this mod that's on Super-Haitus?

I just started making my mod with the Spelunky Copy Challenge, and I just started so I can change it to Realistic being on haitus if you guys prefer Physic.

So what'll it be then? Realistic Spelunky or Physic Spelunky?

Title: Re: YASM - Realistic Spelunky

Physic, but that'd take longer......

Stopping time should be in physic btw

Post by: Dudemaster on March 01, 2010, 07:18:57 PM
Aww, please don't give up on this, since this is the first modification I am genuinely interested in! Do not let your courage falter!

Also, for the purpose of saving time and being a video game, please do have the Esc+F1 command. To make it realistic, just have the spelunker strangle himself with his whip or something, or otherwise the game's inability to quit and save their results at the time of their death would drive people mad, so I would recommend against that route.

And I don't think you're READY to do Physics yet........ no offense...... all of us would have trouble with it

Post by: Sudonimus on March 01, 2010, 07:55:40 PM
...No side comments needed, thank you.

And I wasn't planning much.
Just black holes, white holes, wormholes, time travel, magnetism, electricity...

Maybe I was planning a bit much.
BUT THAT DOESN'T PROVE ANYTHING!! [/worry]

And do the copy thing too

I just updated my list of stuff to do in the first post.
I'm adding physics to it. Well, not physics like the Physics Mod.
Physics like acceleration, friction, and buoyancy.

Title: Re: YASM - Realistic Spelunky
Post by: grieck on March 03, 2010, 06:31:44 PM
The Spelunker shouldn't have a light circle around him, but a cone extending in the direction he's facing.

Title: Re: YASM - Realistic Spelunky
Post by: Sudonimus on March 03, 2010, 07:08:24 PM
Oh my God I think I'll just keep it the way it is.
But... there could be a change...
I would make the circle blurred.

I was thinking of making a line of sight Spelunky, but it could be difficult or time consuming (or both!)

I'll still do it eventually though.

Okay. I just need one thing from somebody; anybody.

I need a hummed soundtrack for Spelunky.
I don't NEED it; but real life doesn't have background music.
So I need a hummed soundtrack from someone.

Spelunker bringing a violin to a cave?
That's downright stupid.

And I'm not going to hum it. No. I am not a Spelunky-voice type.
