Title: Spelunky Love!
Post by: Derek on February 14, 2010, 03:06:23 PM
Hey, guys!  I'm starting a thread to keep track of all the cool mentions Spelunky is getting on the webz and in print.  Please post in the thread if you see something interesting.  Yay. :)

Web

Jay Is Games - Best Downloadable Action Game 2009 (http://www.pcgamertop100.com/editorial/60-41/)

The Escapist (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_209/6235-Infinite-Caves-Infinite-Stories) - "Derek Yu's Spelunky may well be one of the most unassumingly mindblowing games of the last 10 years."

The Onion A.V. Club (http://www.avclub.com/articles/spelunky,23284/) - "The game maintains a nice balance of tight precision puzzles and breezier areas that let your caver stretch his legs. And while the visuals are chunky, everything in the game, from flaming frogs to yetis, moves with a carefully calibrated grace." (A-)

Oh, wow. I never thought non-commercial games could get such buzz.
But that's cause I haven't been around so much.
Really, this is one of the few websites I go on. *Sniffles*
Anyways, Derek, congrats on the buzz.

Indie games are just as awesome and hyped as commercial games. Though you may have to get into the indie scene first.

It's great to see indie games getting so much love these days. :)

I once saw Spelunky in the games corner in a magazine I read called "Boy's Life."

Oh man, does anyone have a scan of that?  I loved Boy's Life when I was a scout.

I was never a scout. Shame on me. But my local Boy Scout troop sucked, according to Mom. So I never joined. But I still subscribed to Boy's Life. It was great. When did you see Spelunky, audioworm?

You learn to do a good turn daily, as well as learn how to be a good citizen, smart outdoors-man, and all around good at most things. You learn to be prepared, you are trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. You promise in your oath to be mentally smart, physically strong, and morally straight. I'd suggest you read up on it.

Aw, no, I hadn't seen that before.  Thanks, MagFlare!

You're welcome. Someone (not me!) painstakingly kept track of all the good press Spelunky got immediately after its release -- if anyone deserves to hear about it, it's the game's creator.

And Spelunky blew a lot of minds when it came out.

Woot!  Tastes Like Spelunky got a review!

TLS Review (http://rpgmaker.net/games/1922/reviews/869/)

It's as much a review of the original as it is the mod, so I figured it belonged here anyway.  :D

And if that's not cool enough: TLS Featured! (http://rpgmaker.net/)

It's gonna be up there all month, too!

Howdy folks!

I'm T.C. Sottek, editor-in-chief over at Gm3r.com. Our "Indie Quest" columnist, Matt Madeiro, recently wrote a glowing narrative about Spelunky. You can check it out here:

http://gm3r.com/blog/2010/09/02/indie-quest-spelunky/

As someone who usually spends his time playing those big budget commercial games, the small indie wonders usually fly under my radar. Matt has me hooked on Spelunky, though, which is a testament to its greatness!

Two thumbs up!

Cheers,

T.C.

OXM UK mentioned the XBLA version in an article on highly-anticipated Live games a couple of months ago...I'll see if my housemate's copy's still kicking about so I can scan it. This puts Spelunky in the same company as Monday Night Combat, if memory serves!

Right, like that'll ever happen. Would be interesting to see him review it, but I think Yahtzee has a soft spot for indie games for obvious reasons.

Indiegames.com is a big fan of Spelunky, apparently. They made an article (with permission from Derek) a while ago about games like Spelunky that don't need an Xbox 360.

http://indiegames.com/2012/07/top_10_spelunky-like_games_for.html#more

Yes, I realize this isn't technically a Spelunky award, persay, but it's definitely recognition by a major website.

Also, note the last result on the first list, halibabica.    :D

Or maybe you could get him to put it in the official code - maybe as DLC, you know - "Mantrap Mode" or something like that.

Anyway, I haven't heard anyone else mention Knytt Underground, been playing that a lot as my temper allows. Today I did a quest which I got a hard disk as the reward, the questgiver described it as having a man and a snake engraved on one side. He goes on to describe how using it let him control a little man who was killing snakes, my first thought was Spelunky and it was confirmed when I saw the icon. It's teeny but you can just make out Spelunky, the title and a snake. I believe Nifflas put some other indie references in there too, but this is the first I found.

You're definitely entitled to your opinion and all, but I see that as being along the same lines as having no sympathy over someone's death because it was suicide.   :-\
