Title: Badge Mod (Concept/Idea)
Post by: hyperme on February 11, 2010, 12:09:41 PM
I've got an idea for a mod.  Badges.  Basically, you collect them and they get added to a 'badge inventory'.  From there you can equip them.  They'd be like badges from Paper Mario 2.  They need Badge Points (or slots) to equuip, and give an abilitly.  By killing enemies, you'd get Exp to aquire new BP or Slots with.
So, what do people think about this?

It's a nice idea (and more practical than many others) but what's the use?

Interesting idea... but this game is a little short for that isn't it?

It can add another layer of stratergy. Example: Do use the Power Whip or the Super Stomp?
The badges could also be put into a longer game mod, making them more useful.

Oh, I thought badges were like trophies. Just brag rights and stuff like that. If they give you abilities, that could change some things... >:) (I really can't believe there isn't an emoticon for that besides  :spl-shop: )

I'll be willing to take those badges off yer hands.

If the badges are retained through multiple runs, then you could spend time levelling things up.

Cheap... I like it.

Ooh, I like the Paper Mario badges. However, Spelunky baddies are always a certain strength, and don't get stronger towards the "end" of the game (playing a bunch of runs).
Players would eventually become overpowered.

You'd have to limit the number of badges you could ever wear at a time.

He plans to do just that if you look, with badge points.

No I saw that, but that implies you get more BP as time goes on.

I mean you can only have so many EVER.
There is no BP, you just can't wear anymore than 2 or 3 badges. Ever.

What if you have to work up to the 2 3 badges when you level up to max?

The way I read it sounded like you could wear 2-3 at a time, but BP/EXP made the ones you were wearing stronger over time.

True, but I am saying he could do that

Or use evil death as the base.

Well if he's going with the Paper Mario style system he refers to, then the number of badges you can wear depends on your BP. Stronger badges take more BP than weaker ones.

Oh nice idea. Paper Mario is by far my favorite Mario adventure game ever. ;P

I have Paper Mario 64, Thousand year door, and Super Paper Mario. I'm hoping that soon enough they'll release another one, like Thousand year door. Super Paper Mario wasn't as fun as TYD.

Anyway, badges. Great idea. :D

POSSIBLE suggestion.. I may be going a bit overboard here, but I'll just put it out there in case..

Maybe you could have an EXP system, for your mod, with like.. A whole new spelunky folder.. So that as you play the game, you gain EXP, and when you die and restart, you still have that EXP.. That way, people will make more use of the RESET Button than they do. It will be fun to repeat..
I'd say you should make the badges equip-able in maybe a new door or something in the score room, at the menu, and not in-game. But you still find and possibly, buy, the badges, in the game.

A badge shop would be nice, but make them very costy. Even more than the Ankh.

Maybe badge shops only appear in area 4, and you should take out the shortcut room. Actually, maybe replace the shortcut room with the badge-equipping room, if possible.

What I'm talking about here would probably be very hard to make, but worth it. That's what I'd like. But anyway, either way - As long as it has badges, I'll support the mod.

For badges, BP is for equiping, as said.  I'd probably go for that, as it lets more crazy power badges be avalible, but you can't use them off the bat.
Combining ideas:

Badges are retained though games.
BP is not however.  You start with 1-3, and build it up.
Badges Shops are rare, and sell basic and shop set badges.  Prices are based on the badge.  Double Pain is dirt cheap.  Defence UP is not.
Monsters may drop badges.  However, this a small chance.
Kali may give badges for favor.  Special badges even.

Of course, this could go into some Spelunky RGP mod.  Which would also be cool.

So they would be HUD items?
Wait...

No.  They'd have a seperate menu place.  Not sure how the equiping would be handled.

In, like the scores room? How the heck would you get powers theN??

You get badges in game.
They go in your badges inventory, which is retained across games.
In game, you open a badge menu and equip!

Also, slots + BP is the best system.
Nothing todo with it being easy to code, of course.  <.< >.>

I really love this idea!  And all the suggestions are great too..

But wouldnt this be really hard to make?

queston:

would bad badges give you extra points?

Well, maybe it wouldn't be so hard to make an in-game menu to equip badges. Just make the game pause in the background when you press a button, and have, like, a list of badges you have, and maybe how much BP you have at the top..
To equip a badge, maybe just click the badge name to highlight it, and click an "Equip" button. And if a badge is equipped maybe have an "[E]" next to it. The list could just be in a grey box opened when you press "B" or something.

Just thinking out loud here.

I think just clicking on the badge would be a lot easier to code, thats just me.

How I see it.

Your badge screen comes up.
You have your slots along the top.
You badges are underneath, it a grid. Hover other one, get information. Click on one, and provided you have enough BP, a free slot and haven't already equiped it, it goes on.
Click a slot to unequip its badge.

.. That'll work. Plain and simple. Nice idea there.

Where would your BP be shown? Maybe you should just have a "BP : -Number-" instead of the dots like in Paper Mario. It'd be much easier to tell how much BP you have, and would probably be easier to code. Would it?
I'd think it is.

Anyway. I don't like to post too much in one thread, because that seems slightly like spamming, but when I have a suggestion or something, I suppose I'll have to post.

..That was randomly off-topic, but, oh well. :)

Rather than having a separate badge menu, would it be easier to just change the pause screen to have a badge menu on it? You wouldn't need an extra button, and the pausing code is already done too. ;)

00Davo just won the thread.

I bet it'd be almost the same amount of work since you'd have to move all the existing text around to fit the badges in.

Title: Re: Badge Mod (Concept/Idea)
Post by: Hayden on February 14, 2010, 05:38:01 AM
I was thinking pause menu would be pretty nice, but the reason I didn't suggest that, was because of that exact reason. I figured it'd be too hard to move all the text off.

Plus, the text may not all fit with the badges, and I use those stats all the time.

Just use a simple "+" button or something to open up the badges menu, in just a little window, and pause the game in the background, and.. Yeah.

I'm sticking next to the new button, for a new window idea. I like that one better. Your choice.

Really? Moving text around is no biggie at all.
Positioning is the most basic of graphics programming.

You do bring up a good point about the statistics though. But if it were me, I'd just move them down and reduce it to only one or two lines.

Title: Re: Badge Mod (Concept/Idea)
Post by: Hayden on February 15, 2010, 12:48:55 AM
Well if it could be done without removing the statistics, I'm 100% aboard.

Anyway.
I thought that moving text still would have been pretty annoying..

Well I agree that either way could work, as long as the statistics stay un-harmed. Or.. You could make the pause menu 100% badge menu, and have a separate button to press that opens another pause menu with your statistics. But that's pretty much my preferred idea, vice versa'd. ;P
