Title: Great shop-robbing method.
Post by: DiNo29 on September 11, 2009, 06:10:36 PM
Area-spoilers and shop-spoilers incoming, care :p.

I just tried a new way to rob shops that wasn't in the wiki, and it's amazingly great. Pasting it here :

"There's a relatively easy way to rob a store on Area 2, and even steal the shopkeeper's shotgun, without angering the shopkeeper or raising your wanted level. Stun a Man-eating Plant, take it up and bring it in the shop. There, drop it on the ground facing the shopkeeper, and get out of the shop. Wait for the shopkeeper to get eaten, he will drop his shotgun. Quickly reap all the loot and get out of the shop. On the next level, no shopkeeper will be angry at you. "

The shopkeeper will still run after you if you stay close, but without getting angry. Possibly just to get his shotgun back.

The fact that you aren't wanted with this method, and get the shotgun, is especially great. Plus, there's man-eating plants on every Area 2 level, so you can probably make it on any area 2 shop. Be careful not to hit the shopkeeper with the stunned Man-eating Plant though, which would of course anger him.

Edit : The plant actually need to have at least 2HP (out of 3) for this to work, so hit it only once.

You should be able to feed the plant someone else to knock it out too, that way he would be at full health. Also, you say "pasting here", did you find this on another site? You may want to cite the source, not necessary but nice.

No no he didn't burst out to kill me.

He burst out AND killed me. at the same time.

Hahaha, been there. I figured blasting near point blank range at the plant with a shopkeeper inside would kill them both. I figured wrong...

That's hilarious (as long as it's not happening to you), to repent I must now attempt to die in this manner.

Put it on you tube.

(It doesn't matter as I died like 15 secs from starting I started in the 2nd area to test this out)

Oh, wow, he finally enabled that? Sweet! When I tried it in 0.99, the man-eating jalapeno just ignored the merchant.  >:(

Oops, forgot to mention that. I meant I discovered it by play-testing, then realized it wasn't on the wiki, added it myself to the wiki and copy-pasted it here.

I have noticed that when you throw a breakable object at the shopkeeper, he get stunned. (pot/skull)

That may work so you can get his shotgun and quickly blast him.

One thing wrong with that:
  • There could be a spider in the pot.
  • There could be a snake in the pot.
  • The shopkeeper could get up before you get even close.
  • The shotgun falls right on the shopkeeper, so even if you get it you'll get thrown, then blasted. (In that order)

It does work, you really just need to stack all the merchanidise in a corner or something so it doesn't get mixed up.  I've tested it several times.

Great shop-robbing method?

I've got one better.

Steal item.
Run fast.
Jump over buckshot.
Land on Shopkeeper.
Grab shotgun QUICKLY.
Run away.
Blast Shopkeeper before he wakes up.
Chase after him.
Blast him again.
???.
Profit.

Title: Re: Great shop-robbing method.
Post by: AresRomanGod on October 08, 2009, 04:46:25 PM
That's not better. That's harder and more tedious.

Title: Re: Great shop-robbing method.
Post by: GreyMario on October 08, 2009, 06:37:50 PM
My ass. It's easier than throwing a pot at the shopkeeper and safer too.

Post by: AresRomanGod on October 09, 2009, 05:58:31 PM
So having split second timing, flat terrain, and a shitload of luck is easier than throwing a pot at him? Okay.

I made up a great way to rob shops that I'd say has >96% chance of working, even higher if the layout is proper, and it requires one bomb and very little skill.

1) grab any item from the shop and ALMOST steal it, walk to the very edge of the shop floor (if you even partly cross over to normal level-floor, he will kill you) to make the shopkeeper move to the shop door

2) walk past the shoppie devil again and put the item you almost stole behind him, keeping him as close to shop entrance as possible (note: don't drop an item "on" him, even if it's down+drop at point blank he sometimes kills you, walk past him, without moving him and drop the item behind him)

3) exit the shop and lay a bomb on floor just outside the shop's door, I stand squarely in the center of the first level-tile outside the shop, and down+BOMB, not switch-to-bomb->down+light-bomb's-fuse+throw, because that throws the bomb more than half a tile distance

4) in the ~5 seconds of time you have before the bomb explodes, move far away enough from the shopkeeper that he won't shoot you, or move out of his line of sight/hide behind something, but keep him in active area, do not go so far as to put him into the frozen area (if you don't know what this is, look it up)

5) the bomb destroys one or two sections of shop floor and maybe the shop's sign, shoppie the devil gets pissed, but he still touches the bomb explosion (which lasts like 0.7 seconds) and kills himself

6) profit, but fear the shoppie devil for the next few levels, or rest of the game.

This isn't as clever as the walking-jalapeno-briefly-eats-shoppie-the-devil trick, but it works on any world, almost any layout, and requires only one bomb (sometimes a rope to get into the shop, if you blew up crucial floor).

Good luck!
-Mang

I still think throwing a pot is easier.  Just stack all the stuff in the corner, throw an ancient relic of pottery in his face, grab his boomstick, and run out of the shop.  Shoot only when he has recovered, since you have a high chance of missing if he is still obbbing up and down.  This is my new favorite method, except, sadly, in one level, I COULD NOT FIND ANY POTS.  =(

I'd love for you to talk this up, then watch it fail every single time.

I tried smacking him with a rock and I was dead before the rock hit the ground. Does the pot always stun him? I don't see why a pot would be stronger than a rock.

The pot breaks; the rock doesn't. Only things that break upon impact will stun him.

So a pot or skull, basically? Hmm.. I'll have to try this out, very interesting!

I would say the plant eating him is better then shooting them, you don't have to deal with them later...

The shopkeeper only pops out if you kill the plant, not stun it, right? Can somebody try sacrificing a plant that ate a shopkeeper and see what happens?

I still can't get a shop, and a nearby altar, to spawn on a jungle level.

Contradictions!

Shouldn't the shopkeeper burst out, since the plant dies?

He didn't burst out, and I didn't bother to check for wantedness. Sorry.
I assume you are since anything and everything you (indirectly) do to him makes you wanted.

Shopkeeper in plant that gets sacrificed gives you a shopkeeper kill, and flags you as a murderer, making you wanted for the rest of the game.

Not sure if this is a common way, but one time I was playing and noticed a Golden Idol setup on the same level as the shop. When I got the idol and moved out of the way, the boulder went crashing through to the store and blocked the shopkeep in his corner. Free items!

To clarify on what I said earlier. The sacrificing is not what makes you a murderer, its the making him get eaten by a plant that does it.
But he was aggro, I wonder what happens while he's peaceful? Probably the same.
