Title: Spelunkying Part 51: Waiting
Post by: halibabica on January 21, 2010, 04:44:04 PM
Okay, folkeys!  I've started writing my Spelunky comic.  It's bound to grow out of control, so I made a separate topic for it.  Plus, it isn't a sprite comic.  :P

You put something in a scanter. you press a button. you get asked how to save it.

happy now?

Yes, I stuffed as many of them in as I could.

Yep.  All my comics are.  Well, except that sprite one I did with Olmec before.

Lady in Red (http://halibabica.deviantart.com/art/2-Lady-in-Red-151467456)

Time to introduce the Damsel.  Stories are character driven, and watching Spelunky man overcome all these trials alone would be sooooo boring.

If I were to make a Spelunky comic, it wouldn't be a sprite one.

Halibabica's idea is good.

I always thought it was funny that you don't really save the damsel, you just take her deeper into the cave.

The fact that she is in the ending if you save her once really gets that idea across.

Lots of setup followed by lots of filler and sparsely-placed major plot points.  It's the essence of a long-winded story!

That's really strange.  Don't know what's up, gummy, but here's what I'll do.  I'll make each page a link back to its original in my deviant art gallery, so you can click on the picture and view it there instead.

EDIT: Yeah, that totally didn't work.  I'll include a link to the original above each one instead.

Gahhh, too big images.

If you could, could you make it a preview, and not the image itself?

I'd like to have it pop out when clicked, not gigantic and making me wait a few minutes to load the page. :'(

Sorry, I made them just big enough to fill a standard screen length-wise.  I don't know how to do a preview, and these forums don't have [hide] tags (that I'm aware of, at least).  Maybe I should just leave it at the link to my deviantArt gallery instead?

Nice nice but one issue: doesn't look like you would walk past those spikes like in the game. thats the only in game thing that doesn't make sense yet.

(I think you can get girls mid air by the way, I am fairly sure that happened once to me)

Yea the new flare system, although it saves a button, just doesn't make any sense.

It is quite a bit TOO convenient that flares would just HAPPEN to be there where it's dark.

I used to think the scarabs were lions' heads: the legs were the mane, and the elytra were the cheeks. I was never quite sure why I was collecting flying, glowing lions' heads, but, hey, I've done weirder things in videogames...

Anyways.

The comic is pretty sweet. I particularly like that the sound effect that accompanies spelunking is "SPELUNKIN'."

He knew about the caves, too...but you know how Spelunky is.  It's never exactly the same each time.  ;)

And since I'm well aware that's a total cop-out answer, let me back it up with some BS: if it seems like the spelunker was surprised or didn't know about something in the caves, then he simply didn't encounter it on his previous expedition.

Whee, cover-alls.

Are you going to include the damsel's apparent healing kiss?
Sorry, didn't have any plans for that.  I'm trying to keep a balance between how things work in-game and how they would in the real world.  Plus, if they figured out she could heal with kisses, their adventure would lose most of its excitement.

Good catch indeed! >=)

I'd like to take a moment here to apologize for the lack of updates, but also explain why.  See, I'm in this art tournament thing (http://pcbcos.deviantart.com)* on deviantArt where everybody writes comics to compete with each other.  And I'm doing pretty dang well!

During the rounds, all my comic time is going into that instead.  I do my best to write Spelunkyings (and my other comic series) inbetween them, but I don't always get very far.  So thank you for being patient, and know that I will have all this finished sooner or later.  You can bet on later.

Unfortunately I don't have a scanner, just a camera.
I'm pretty sure taking camera pics of comics kinda messes it up.

Title: Re: Spelunkying Part 27: Paying the Price
Post by: halibabica on August 16, 2010, 07:57:07 PM
I think it would depend on how the picture was taken.  You'd have to be careful with the lighting in the room and whatnot...but then again, I'm no photo expert so I can only guess! :o

Title: Re: Spelunkying Part 27: Paying the Price
Post by: orange08 on August 18, 2010, 11:31:59 AM
Another thing I hate about taking pictures with cameras is that they are always saved as icky jpeg (also know as jpg).
I'm assuming your scanner saves them as something else? (with better quality)

Why, thank you!

Title: Re: Spelunkying Part 31: Fight and Flight
Post by: Bae on October 30, 2010, 01:15:44 PM
damnit i didnt see those

also im pretty sure its centered at the exact alignment that you had it, i could be wrong but I dont see how that couldve happened since i didnt edit the first frame outside of making it green so i could make it transparent (idk how the dots got there man)

EDIT: I THINK I HAVE IT NOW MAYBE

so for some reason the dots and displacement were being done by my gif maker, so thats why that happened (fun fact: it was red green and blue dots, not just two black ones or w/e)

if this one doesnt work i will eat a shoe

All you need to do it is at least two tiles deep of water and some fast fingers.  The deeper the water, the easier it is to do and the higher you can jump.  I'm surprised you've never done this!

I don't know if you plan on finishing this still, but I LOVE this comic. I love it so much. :) The drawings don't have to be that detailed to be enjoyable, and most of these made me laugh so hard, 'cause it's from the game and it's SO TRUE...  :D

I do hope you finish it. But I guess it's more important if your life is busy with stuff right now instead. Things like this should be fun for you, not a chore.  ;)

Oh, yes, I definitely intend to continue.  See, thing is, I keep getting wrapped up in these things called "OCTs" (original character tournaments).  Comic tourneys that pit artists against each other.  They're time consuming, and also have deadlines!  So anytime I'm busy drawing for one, I don't have time for Spelunkying.

But there will be more!  Maybe even soon.

Because you only meet the Tunnel Man if you've been through at least once before.  This is the first time Hero reached the ice caves, so Doug won't be showing up (nor will he at the temple).

Sorry, I don't have any more plans involving Kali for this thing.  There's a lot you can do with altars in Spelunky and plenty of material to work with, but it just wouldn't fit what I'm going for here.  So our evil goddess will have to settle for her near cameo role.

Title: Re: Spelunkying Part 47: New Territory...IN COLOR!!!

Actually, I don't believe Kali is evil. According to what I read, she is the goddess of death and change. A crucial part of life is death, for without it life of others could not exist. And "change" is neither good nor evil...

Yeah, maybe. Although I think of the cavemen, hawkmen, vampires, and generally every being that tries to kill me as evil, so i see justice in sacrificing them.
I agree that sacrificing the damsel is evil... And I still do it a lot... -evil laugh-

Not as long as you'd think. It was a lot of copy/paste, to be sure.

Really, great comics! It's very nice to see how would the spelunker be in real life (okay, not so much "real life"). Just miss the red nose, but on second thhought, it's better like this.

I dunno why Derek gave everyone clown noses in Spelunky, but I never cared for them myself.

Also, hey, I totally did not forget about this series. I am very, very slowly coming back around to it. Just like a lot of things in my life right now, I'm having trouble finding the time to juggle it.

Now if only I could convince myself of that. :< I'm slowly working my way back around to these. I'm not sure when exactly the next will be up, but I'll come around someday. I have an awful tendency to get too much on my plate.

Yes. But not yet. We've been waiting quite a while indeed, and we'll still be waiting a bit longer, but I WILL return to this. Real life can be such a pain sometimes...

You can't bribe me! Why, I could never accept your hard-earned monies for the sake of writing a silly fan comic on the internet. It wouldn't feel right!
Pay me thirty billion and we'll talk.
