Title: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: Zlidrit on January 06, 2010, 03:27:28 AM
Dear Derek , you are a genius. You made a game I always dreamed of.
Roguelike platformer ! Awesome is not the word to describe it.

However I am parent - which means i am often called away to immediate duty  ;)

And this is a bummer. Cause if i start playing and have a good run. I may have to turn off the game.

Also. Spelunky is such a great game to play on coffe break at work. Alas again. Time is limited.

So i wonder why there is no simple save on exit ? Just recording your state if game was exited. Like Roguelikes.

Its no save. And it will surely not make game less hardcore (didnt do it for roguelikes)

Simply now i hesitate to play Spelunky everytime thinking i wont have time to finish it....

So please, please,please

Do it for us Dads, and Moms, and working folks.

p.s.

This is a plea to source community aswell

This is likely to be made at some point or another. (I would attempt if I had more experience) I think there was some response to making the game "more Roguelike" in a few ways. More difficulty, random potions, and cursed items are already in the works or finished.

I could make such a thing, but I don't now how to make it go away when you load it or prevent cheating, and I wouldn't want to make Spelunky  with save states

Not save states, just when you turn off Spelunky in the middle of the game and turn it on again, it should ask... Would you like to resume?

Mars means that he can make it so you can save, but he doesn't know how to make it delete when loaded in otherwords, Save stating.

If Spelunky was exited in middle of game (during play session) it saves the state.

On Spelunky open , it checks for saved state. If there is one it asks you "Would you like to continue" - If yes. It loads the game and than deletes save game.

I so hope you do this one mate !!!!!

:D

Copied from the "Continue?" topic, as they are essentially the same request.

There is a roguelike I have (made in GM) in which it was added, I'll see if I can find out how.

...

You don't seem to grasp the problem. I don't know how to make game maker delete the save. saying "delete save" doesn't help because that is what I don't know how to do it. thats like trying to teach someone to drive by saying drive... I understand your trying to help but...

arucard let me know if you know how to delete saves.

I looked at the game I was thinking of, but that guy is way more advanced than I could come near understanding. I'm still checking around with tutorials and resources to make some of my own stuff, so hopefully I'll run into something that may help.

This is one fix I am looking forward to... Would this be considered a mod?

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: marsgreekgod on January 07, 2010, 06:13:00 PM
Yes it would be a small mod

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: gummybears123 on January 07, 2010, 06:20:28 PM
I do NOT consider this small ;D

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: marsgreekgod on January 07, 2010, 06:23:15 PM
A small mod can change a lot.

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: gummybears123 on January 07, 2010, 06:25:21 PM
This shouldn't be a mod, it should be another version

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: marsgreekgod on January 07, 2010, 06:28:41 PM
But it is a mod? I you change something about a game, it's a mod no matter how small, unless I somehow become derak (or was all along, or he said you own spelunky now, or a bunch of other stuff that well never happen.) I can never make a new verson

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: gummybears123 on January 07, 2010, 06:31:16 PM
So all versions are mods?

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: marsgreekgod on January 07, 2010, 06:34:46 PM
No, All verson not made by derak are mods.

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: gummybears123 on January 07, 2010, 06:37:21 PM
Ah, ok, I see the difference now

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: Sudonimus on January 07, 2010, 06:37:42 PM
Well, that's irrelevant because they wouldn't
be versions; they would be mods.

They would never have been versions in the
start, so why bother?

Every game made with the original being Spelunky
that wasn't created by the creator of the original/
the person who bought the copyright is a mod.

Mod means modification, right?

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: marsgreekgod on January 07, 2010, 06:39:17 PM
Mod means modifcation yes.

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: Sudonimus on January 07, 2010, 06:40:37 PM
How would you make it save?
You mean like all those other noobish
game makers on YoYoGames who post
their games on the YoYoGames site?
They do that.

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: gummybears123 on January 07, 2010, 06:40:54 PM
I hope this is in the XboxLive version

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: marsgreekgod on January 07, 2010, 06:42:06 PM
How would I save? what do you mean?

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: Sudonimus on January 07, 2010, 06:43:32 PM
How would you make it save?
I mean, on a blank, untouched Game Maker
file that hasn't been started yet, it might
be easier, but Spelunky has so many things
in the folders I don't wanna mess anything up.

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: marsgreekgod on January 07, 2010, 06:46:37 PM
game_save(Temp_save);
and
   game_load(Temp_save);

but this would let you save mid game and load as many times as you like

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: Sudonimus on January 07, 2010, 06:47:55 PM
Sounds way too simple for what
I was thinking.

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: marsgreekgod on January 07, 2010, 06:50:41 PM
Yep it is.

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: Sudonimus on January 07, 2010, 06:51:26 PM
So what would the full be?

Like, how loading would go and how saving would go?

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: Arucard on January 08, 2010, 04:43:05 PM
Mars, (and anyone else with an opinion) what do you think about posting one with the default save for the time being? Obviously it's very cheatable, but for the guys who need it, might be nice to have something in the mean time?

Aww... now I'm sad :'(

Title: Re: Save on exit (like roguelikes) - Please , please , please !
Post by: Arucard on January 08, 2010, 07:54:08 PM
It's able to save and continue within the game, but once closed and started again always seems to crash. Another workaround will need to be discovered, or a bit of recoding I guess.

Oh noe, are we gonna lose another one?
Anyway, it seems the default save used with Spelunky works fine as long as the game is not closed. This, given the context in which it was requested, makes it virtually useless.  :-\

Not loosing anyone. I am quietly checking this topic every day (dont want to disturb) hoping you guys find the solution and do this fine mod :)
