Title: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now
Post by: gummybears123 on December 27, 2009, 09:13:48 AM
Everyone now knows that you can't step on spikes or flip hang onto spikes without meeting your death... but you can still use a rope to step onto them!

Kind of a waste of rope to lower down one tile though, don't ya think?

Post by: marsgreekgod on December 27, 2009, 01:40:32 PM
if the rope touches the bottom, it works, so you can go down more then one tile.

Yea that's what I meant...

Ropes and capes are the only ways of safely landing on spikes now...

what about jetpacks? does that trick still work?

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now

Not that I know of...

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now
Post by: ManaUser on December 27, 2009, 02:28:50 PM
Interesting, so that means capes are actually better than jetpacks in one case now.

Speaking of safer, one thing got a whole lot easier. Remember how he he said he fixed the bug where hang-dropping in front of an arrow trap doesn't trigger it? Well now it does, but it triggers before you flip down, so you don't get hit. In other words it's now a safe and easy way to defuse the trap.

BOMBS!! BOMBS!!

Destroy the spikes, i think he means.

That depends. Since they also come in 12-packs, it's pretty common to end up with way more bombs that ropes. I would definitely consider using one to bypass a monkey pit. Crossing them "properly" is way to risky.

I mined an arrow trap when I was the Tunnel Man and the trap fell to pieces and an arrow fell out!  I never noticed this until now!

I've never noticed that either, but I assume it's new. One of the things Derek added in the changelog said "arrow traps now have arrows inside". Since you don't see an arrow before it shoots, I think this is what he meant.

I haven't found any uses for it yet.

You get a free arrow!  I meant in custom levels...

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now
Post by: marsgreekgod on December 28, 2009, 07:18:55 PM
Ah i see. you could use it to make that you need to bomb an arrow trap with out setting it off (or it flys into lava) so you can use it to clime into a three high block?

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now
Post by: gummybears123 on December 29, 2009, 10:40:29 AM
yep, and 2 to climb 4 blocks

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now

I never quite get the 4 block working right, how do you do that?

I've done it once or twice, but it's tricky to get right. The ideal placement seems to be one arrow half way up, and one 3/4 of the way up, i.e. two tiles high and three tiles high respectively.

You'd think that would mean you could scale any height wall by adding more arrows one tile apart, but for some reason I can never grab the third arrow.

I think 4 blocks is the highest you can go... :'(

Imagine Derek added wall jump.

Hectic.

Wall jumping does sound fun!

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now
Post by: gummybears123 on December 29, 2009, 08:05:54 PM
Doesn't it already work if you use climbing gloves and the walls are one unit apart?

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now
Post by: marsgreekgod on December 29, 2009, 08:31:28 PM
yes yes it does.

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now

Hm.
Not quite the answers I expected at all.

I really don't feel safe at all.

OH yeah, and I didn't read the changelog
(I have an aversion to long, boring scripts)
so don't expect me to know everything right then.

That's not really wall jumping per se, more like climbing.
I mean wall jumping like in the newer mario games or like some of the characters in super smash bros have.

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now
Post by: marsgreekgod on December 29, 2009, 10:33:32 PM
I wouldn't know how to start, last time I tried to put wall jumping in a game I wasted a week of my life.

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now
Post by: Kegluneq on December 29, 2009, 10:49:05 PM
Hmm... It can't be that difficult can it?
First make a state for clinging to a wall similar to the states for standing on the ground. Then just have the jump key do what it always does plus a sideways motion.

Post by: marsgreekgod on December 29, 2009, 10:59:38 PM
State? ha funny. that would be the smart way to program your guy to move. With having states and stuff like that.

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now

I think the best chance that we have for wall jumping is Derek...

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now
Post by: Kegluneq on December 29, 2009, 11:19:09 PM
That's how Derek did it. And that's where I got the idea from.

Burrrrrrn. But in other news: wall jump would be good, but has the possibility of making some parts a bits easier (though some harder, especially if you take the approach of just having one wall jump rather than infinite, as many games do).  Mind you, would be nice to have a change not focused on difficulty, just there for fun. After all it does seem like every new mod mainly makes the game harder (save the potion mod, doubly so with the first unfixed version, triply with the increased spawn version; though even that included something to balance it out and attempt to add difficulty).

Well I could make super easy mode if you like. but it well chost you 1 dollar.

Not easy (as I love to point out until others catch on) the potion mod's first iteration IS super easy mode.

More focus less on making the game fun through difficulty, just finding concepts that are fun (whether they effect difficulty or not unimportant; though technically that can apply to your EVIL DEATH thing when it comes out. Fun concepts, that Just So Happen to make the game sooooo much harder).

Here's a wall jump code I got from a video tutorial, never used it but it should work I guess.

placed in the step event of the PC

ifplacemeeting (x+1,y,obj_solid) && keyboard_check_pressed (vk_up) && keyboard_check (vk_right) && can_wall_jump_r =1 && place_free (x,y+1) {vspeed = -6 can_walljump_r = 0 can_walljump_l = 1}

The whole thing is then repeated replacing x +1 with x -1 to jump back and forth between walls. The question I have is how to create user-defined variables (like can_walljump_r), I tried just entering a set variable action, but it wouldn't take.

Post by: marsgreekgod on December 30, 2009, 12:08:36 PM
Um...  well you would need more code then that (the variables need to be defined) and that only works for walls to the right

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now
Post by: Sudonimus on December 30, 2009, 01:27:26 PM
Who started all this wall jump nonsense?

Spelunky wouldn't make sense that way.

I don't like that code, it looks messy.
I like my state method better, but I guess I am biased. :P

Y'know Sudonimus, if you read more than just the last few posts, you'd find answers to a lot of your questions.

That's what I was asking about the user defined variables, but I found out how to do that since, this is code for wall jumping Metroid-style (push against the wall, then the other direction and jump) I like the N+ method better though. And to change the direction you just replace each +1 to -1 and each can_walljump_l to _r and vice-versa. Anyway, I just thought you might want to play around with it.

Wall jumping Metriod/Mario style, that could be awesome... But should it be standard, or needing a Item, maybe added to the grappling gloves?

Personally I'm all crazy about a double jump... That's one nice way to move  ;D

Yea, I like both the double jump and the wall jump

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now

I don't know if a double jump would fit in Spelunky as it stands, but (feel like I've said this before) spring shoes should let you wall jump, maybe keep wall jumping as long as you can go between? Or like Delver said have the grapple gloves plus spring shoes, wouldn't it be nice to discover hidden functions through item combinations!  :o

Title: Re: You Can Feel A Bit Safer Now

That would be neat, let's think of some more!

If there are enough good ones, I may make a mod for it.

I was considering making a feather item that lets you double jump! Ideally, it would be even better with the spring shoes. (Two spring shoes jumps!)

But I don't have Gamemaker Pro. I'm getting a visa gift card though, so I could order it if I really wanted to.

What's Metroidvania?

I've heard it a lot, and

I agree. Wall jump would be cool, with an item, but "double jumping" doesn't make very much sense. Besides in play it would just be kind of an odd compromise between the spring shoes and the jet pack.
