Title: Spelunky Socks
Post by: Hired Hans on February 26, 2014, 08:39:43 AM
Hey guys. 2 questions:

1) Does anyone know how to contact Derek directly?

2) If there was a video game socks making company (there soon will be) then would you guys be at all interested in putting on Spelunky socks in the morning? So you could mix and match the angry shopkeeper with say... a yeti or the pug or whatever.

I'm doing a kickstarter soon, I have the awkward yeti and Behemoth studios on board and would love to get Spelunky. Must have spent over 100 hours getting into the top 40 - i've paid my dues.

1) Um, there are ways of contacting Derek. I don't know them, but I'm sure you can find them.

2) Hell yeah! That would be amazing.

Thanks Michelle,

1) Actually I stumbled upon his email by accident after getting my password reset.

2) Great! I can't think of any characters that would cheer me up more on socks than Spelunky characters. But so many to choose from. So which characters do you think would be best? I think maybe:

Yeti
Gold Buddha
Queen Bee
Shopkeeper
Spelunky himself
Pug

Meh on the Queen Bee, you should also do the standard damsel, and the alien, maybe olmec and Yama.

Thanks Michelle,

Olmec sounds like a good one. I'd love to do a whole collection of 4 or 5, but one response from 70 views suggests it's not gonna get much support from the fanbase. I still think they'd be appealing to the average gamer. I messaged Derek but no response. Behemoth were good enough to want to talk, but not my hero Derek. So it's risky using official artwork. Might just have to do a fan art type job on them. Thanks for the suggestions Michelle. I'll keep ya posted.

Sweet glad to hear it.

Does anyone know of any good Spelunky fan art mixed with something else? Derek hasn't responded yet, so I can't do anything official. Also just going to make the one design. I thought about mixing Spelunky or the shopkeeper with Minecraft somehow. What do you think? Examples of my current sock designs can be seen here:

Really there isn't much fan based stuff that's original, I mean, we have stuff like the blue frog and how it's the embodiment of Satan and the eggplant but that's stuff from the game. I mean, I'd buy some Purple Man Adventure (http://mossmouth.com/forums/index.php?topic=3971.0) socks but that's just me.

Not really sure if Derek would be fine with someone making money out of his Artwork or IP.. even if the intentions are good :P

Yeah agreed. I offered to pay, so really hope he gets back to me with a positive response. Literally no other character would make me happier than Spelunky characters. But if i can't do it the official way, it may have to be a parody. Mixing him with Indiana Jones is a bit too obvious. Perhaps there's a temple run, mario or minecraft option. I'd like to think almost 1500 tries on his game and a top 40 ranking would qualify me to collaborate with him. We'll see.
