Title: Gambling Parlor Replacement!
Post by: bloxxin on February 09, 2014, 03:07:06 PM
Spelunky 8-Bit has the dice house, while Spelunky HD has the wheel of fortune.

Which do you think is better?

How about even newer stuff like scratch tickets or slot machine? Other unlisted gambling parlor replacements? Etc.?

I haven't played HD, but I really ought to. Still, my only beef with the existing parlor is that re-rolling the first die by accident will get you shot. I can't remember if that ever got fixed or not, though. It wasn't an issue in TLS because...obvious reasons. :P

It never got fixed, some mods have added functionality to drop the dice without rolling by crouch-dropping.

The dice are cute, but a bit clumsy. There are several ways to anger the shopkeeper accidentally (aside from what was already mentioned, you can also throw the dice out of the shop, or hit him with them) and this doesn't add a anything, IMHO, it's just annoying. So overall I'd say the wheel is better.

A new game might be fun too, though I would be careful about changing the odds too much. That part works pretty good as it is.

I like the dice more because it's WAY faster and the odds are WAY better. It's a form of Glass Cannon brokenness where you can abuse it to fucking absurd amounts, but have to deal with the possibility that you get shot in the face for no good reason.

I think everyone does that, lots of good loot, before the ghost screws them up...

But look at this, a slot machine takes like 1 second to start and end, and who says odds can't be made to be made similar?

I don't think faster is necessarily better. I see the delay as part of the "cost" of using the casino. The wheel does feel a little bit too slow though, I agree.
