nice idea. but you makeing to many chars to start, and it's too zoomed in. and the recolors are bad. do you want better recolors?

Part 2
I tried to do some custom heads and did a completely different size.
Can't quite stop recoloring stuff.

I can't even tell where the panels end...

Yea, no offense but... That wasn't that great. And very confusing.

I think you're trying too hard. Most good sprite comics, or just about any comic for that matter, come from a rather simple idea.

I've got a great idea for a little one, will do it when I get home :-)

make sure we can tell the panels apart. and you say who people are, and what they are doing. and you don't recolor badly.

The situation in the second panel is very easy to overcome.  Jump on to the mummies' heads and jump off to victory.

@TailorTF: I like your newer ones, much better. I have one little complaint though, I find the font quite hard to read, especially with the AntiAlias/JPG compression

I've got ideas for a couple more, so will try and do them when I get home

.... intereting idea, but it could of been better played out. And the old font was fine in my book, this isn't quite as good, but it's not bad

IMO, the font is clearer, but it's all very cramped. Might just be my eyes from all that ... staring at a monitor all day.

The spoiler one is the best so far, they're getting better. It works out to have some continuity between them (for each author I mean) so that's good.

Well,in 4 he got scared because he thought it's kinda freaky that the damsel appeared in the kissing booth.Plus everything is trying to kill him so he has the right to be suspicious.
As for 8 and later...you'll see.

Try using some coherence, some actual fucking dialogue boxes instead of white paste-ons, and also try not using the fucking JPG format.

Hey, you two aren't the monkey under the slammer here.

There is nothing wrong with JPEG, as for the text boxes, I don't mind them, how about you just don't post in this topic, if you don't like the comics.

Doesn't stop me being right.

You doofuses need a reason as to why NOT to use JPG?

Lossy compression. You idiots ever heard of it? It's NOT a good thing when used for sprite comics. Seriously, learn to internet.

You doofuses need a reason as to why proper dialogue boxes should be used?

They look good and show that you're putting in more effort than COPY PASTE COPY PASTE DRAG DRAG DRAG TYPE TYPE TYPE TYPE TYPE SAVE LOLCOMICLOLOLOLOL.

You doofuses need a reason as to why it needs some sort of coherence?

Oh, wait. You probably wouldn't be able to understand why, if you think this is good.

Although I wouldn't put it so... bluntly and rudely. He is correct. If you're making sprite comics PNG is the best form, JPG/JPEG messes up quality.

Proper dialogue boxes make it look more professional, as does having who's speaking more apparent. Coherence adds to it, but some comics are just random and have no coherence.

Other people are perfectly fine with unprofessional looking webcomics.
No one ever said that these are good quality. (no offense TailorTF)
We just know that they're being made by an amateur (again, no offense) and so it doesn't bother us that the quality isn't top notch.

So how about instead of getting so angry at him, be like Kirby Lord here and just offer him some polite, solid advice.

Meh, I always use PNG because I'm a pixel artist (well, attempt to be). So I understand that, and would recommend it to Tailor. However, I don't really have any problems with his comics (thx for fixing the font, easier to read now  ;D).

And the language and tone was rather unnecessary.

I've now removed Windows 7 at home and am back on XP (starting *again* with Spelunky) and I've got a great little idea for a comic, so when I get home, I'll build it up for all (most) of you to enjoy.  :D

I think we're also missing one point which I believe should be seriously praised. The comics are either cropped, or re-sized to fit on the forum page. It is a small issue, but highly annoying to me, when pics are posted hanging half off the page. So I say bravo to you guys for making the comics the proper size, whatever format you wish to use for the photo. It also really doesn't matter what us doofuses think, if the one posting the comics doesn't want to use PNG, BMP, etc. he doesn't have to. So I think it's time to drop the issue, Mario your point has been noted and I'm sure will be under consideration, no reason to take it further, thank you.

Well, I remember SOMEONE saying
that after Spelunker dies it should
show his story in "heaven" or something.

Just playing along with public demands.

Or requests.

Either way, Shopkeeper pumps lead into
anyone making comics supporting Spelunker,
so why not make a comic about him dead?

Okay, that one was pointless.

Lossy compression. You idiots ever heard of it? It's NOT a good thing when used for sprite comics. Seriously, learn to internet.

Just depends how obsessive you are with the way it looks, you could copy and paste a couple characters, then throw in some word bubbles in minutes. If you really want to invest time in it, you can add in screen effects, play with lights, bump mapping, whatever, and take months.

I have an idea, the Spelunker goes to a shop, and asks how much a bag of bombs is, the ShopKeeper says "5,000$ for 3", Spelunker then throws a bomb at the ShopKeeper,it hits the ShopKeeper in the head and knocks him out, then the bomb blows up, and Spelunker says "Do you accept bombs?" and walks away.
I have had this idea for awhile, tried giving it to pmprog, but he didn't want to use it I guess.

I do actually have the old file you sent me, but just thought we were doing the original sprites.

Maybe it is a better idea to ask which sprites someone might use in their comics, rather than trying to rip them all. The shopkeeper, spelunky, damsel, and a few enemies are pretty much a given. So with TM, shopkeep, yeti, and mantrap under way, what else should there be?

To what?
Why are the damsel's eyes blue?
And HOW ARE YOU MAKING THE COMICS SO QUICKLY? I LOVE THEM!!!
They're only four panels, and they're all in basically
the same place, with the same people.

I write comics better handrawn.
Except for the graphics.
You can't make everything grid aligned with a pen and paper.

But, either way, I'll try.

why didn't he just run threw here and take 1 damage?

Title: Re: A Spelunky Sprite Comic
Post by: TailorTF on January 07, 2010, 09:51:56 PM
Well,lessee...1 damage from bumping into the damsel in TF 7,1 from smacking into the wall in TF 9 and 1 from the fall damage he took in the snake pit...it's his last hitpoint.
But actually, this is a comic. If we would incorporate game laws in it,it would become too ridicilous.

Title: Re: A Spelunky Sprite Comic
Post by: marsgreekgod on January 07, 2010, 10:01:19 PM
you can't get damage from runing into a wall.

and you should incorporate game laws, so it becomes ridcilous

A while ago (version 0.999B) I made a 2 player spelunky, it's hard to code, and still buggy, but i'll upload it.

http://host-a.net/hasser/spelunky_coop_0_99_9B.exe (http://host-a.net/hasser/spelunky_coop_0_99_9B.exe)

controls are:
WASD+ZXC&leftshift - player 1
HJKL+arrowkeys - player 2

Bear in mind it is extremely hard to add 2player, interactions with objects are the hardest bit.

Thanks, the ZXC controls are very awkward(as is shared health and the screen seems to just follow P1, probably for the better).
Can't wait to test this further with my girl.
Can't wait till later additions allowing gamepads and more people.

If I had sprites/backgrounds/knowledge of how to make them I would be glad to contribute.

For the quickest way to get started, just play the game as normal (or make some custom levels and play them) then hit the Print Screen key, pause the game, and Alt+Tab to your paint package, and hit Ctrl+V (Paste), then just trim down the section you want. Draw white boxes on, and put text in it. Ta Da... Comic  ;D

It's not that obvious, I'm sure a lot of people aren't even aware there's a "print screen" button, let alone what it does, and how to use it.

Obviously screen capping gives you less flexability than just pasting the sprites, but It saves you some of the leg work on picking tiles etc.  :)

Title: Re: A Spelunky Sprite Comic

At a time? what do you mean?

well the answer is no it goes as fast as you press f9
I mean, like, you know how after the game, if you
pressed F9 your shots come up next to the exe file?

If, say, you pressed F9 twice, at the end of the game
would there be 2 screenshots next to the exe file?

Title: Re: A Spelunky Sprite Comic

Yes I answered the question.

If you press f9 a screen shot comes no matter how offen or fast. why would only work once per game?

I write a LOT of comics.  More than a healthy person probably should (http://halibabica.deviantart.com/gallery/).  (Don't expect to be amazed, for they are utterly lame visually.)
That's not bad, they have a pretty cute, unique style. Nice pumpkin too!  :)

Title: Re: A Spelunky Sprite Comic
Post by: halibabica on January 17, 2010, 10:03:06 AM
that isn't very many...
Surprise: only the first episodes are in the featured section.  The series' folders contain over FIVE HUNDRED COMICS.
Where'd you get halibabica from?
Made it up off the top of my head.  I'm just glad I don't have to stick numbers on it as a screen name.
That's not bad, they have a pretty cute, unique style. Nice pumpkin too!  :)
Thanks!  It's not the best art out there, but it gets the job done.

Darn it, now I can't stop thinking about all the fun stuff I want to do in my Spelunky comic.  So HERE'S THE DEAL:

If somebody can get ahold of all the various pieces of text that show at the start of the game for me, I'll start planning and writing this thing.  I'm sure they're in the source code and whatnot, but I don't know how to access that (I don't have Game Maker, any version of it).  Help a brudda out?

Title: Re: A Spelunky Sprite Comic
Post by: Sudonimus on January 19, 2010, 03:05:53 PM
Sure, though someone will probably beat me to it.
I looked it over accidentally, and I saw that it was
divided into lines randomly.

Like for line 1, it would randomly pick between quotes,
like "as the moon burned bright above," and line 2 it would
randomly pick between other quotes, like "I furrowed my
brow," and line 3, etc.

But, sure, I'll try.
like "I furrowed my brow"

...You REALLY are missing the point aren't you?
Some of us may not have Gamemaker
Some of us may want easy access to the sprites
Its less work for everyone else
Its very annoying that you fail to realize the point of ripping the sprites.

I do have gamemaker,
I was talking about those that don't.

Also let me give you a question gummy.

What Advantages are there to NOT ripping the sprites
Unless you can give me a good answer for that then theres really no reason for you to be against doing so.

Cropping screenshots for use in comics.

I tried using a WalDamsel image, but because of the gmsprite extension, it wouldn't work on any programs but Game Maker.

Oh, NOW I realize why this is so hard. You have to convert it.  ;D

How? With some media converter? Or http://mediaconverter.org/ (http://mediaconverter.org/)?

At the part where it said "Save As," it said "Game Maker Sprite File" something.

I clicked it to save it as something else, but the only option was "Game Maker Sprite File" something.

There is an option on the drop down "save as PNG" not save as, then tell it PNG. But either way. And yes putting all the files together in a single sheet is the time consumer, not saving them. Unless your doing something like a rock, which has only one image.

Heheh... *smiles sheepishly* In my handmade Spelunky comic, Spelunker's dad is just like Indiana Jones's.

I second Kegluneq, I love playing with explosives in Spelunky.

Do you know what you're saying?

Is a bell not ringing in your head? Leave the modding to the mods. (Even though I'm not a mod here, I'm still a mod.)

*posts in it*

I don't know if Tailor plans on continuing or not.  I mean, it wouldn't have sunk so far if he did...

Then again, may be he just forgot.

Maybe, maybe not.
Just don't quit making your comics or it's scepter time.

You might notice there isn't much humor in this one. That is because there are sometimes comics known as "transitional comics",which you make to get the story going.

She left when they were doing the Phoenix Wright reference.I even wanted to add some lines in the background showing Spelunky and...well...Ninja Guy talking, but I didn't.

Yeah,I just Googl'd "16x16 club" and got it from Nethack.
Also, comic will be up.I just haven't thought out the panels yet,but I know the general plot(if you guess it,you win a cookie!).

Let me guess. Ninja and Spelunky notice Damsel is missing but don't care.

I knew that club looked familiar from some old game I had played; wouln't have guessed Nethack though.

Alright,I got over the point where I don't know the plot!it's all smooth sailin' from here on out.Well, except the fact that I'm going away to vacation for about three weeks, but, hey, that'll give me more time to think of more plot, right?Right?

Alright,it has come to my attention that my crappy comics and their crappier posting schedule are not really popular anymore. Therefore,I'd like to let you decide, whether I should  just delete this thread and forget about it ever happening,or should I carry on with the comic. If you like,I can start making comics again. In fact,I have been thinking about a hand-drawn comic.Well, that's not the point right now,so,happy voting!

Well, I'll be frank.  They aren't that great.  But they aren't terrible, either.  I didn't get good at writing comics by NOT writing them for years.  You gotta start somewhere, and if you keep at it, you might surprise yourself.

So, I think you should carry on, if only for the practice.  Besides, nothing's too popular here.  This forum is soooooooooooooooooooo small.

It's honestly not the best but there is no reason to get rid of this topic, just... go slowly and don't worry about making a joke every time.

Okay,I have made my decision. It'll be sort of like a surprise, but there are two things I'll say:
1)The old comics are going down.
2)I'm NOT stopping with the comic buisness.
See ya in a few days,TailorTF.
