How to use mods?
1)Backup the .wad and .wad.wix files in the Data folder, in case you wanna revert to the original textures and sounds.
2)Download the mod you want.
3)Replace the .wad and .wad.wix files in present in Date > Textures or Data > Sounds (depending on the type of mod you're downloading) with the .wad files you have downloaded.
3)Play Spelunky and thank the mod developer if you like it.

IMPORTANT NOTES
  • Try to create a new topic for your mod.
  • Name your mod.


What would happen to your lovely game, if you accidentally delete your '.wad' files while trying mods?

What do you mean? People are cracking the game? If so, then it's true for each and every game.

Am I the only one for whom the 'Lobby.ogg' music is not playing i.e. the music that plays when you enter the cave that has the entrance to the Mines?
I don't want to report it as an issue without fully being confident that it's a bug.

Don't worry, it's not a bug. That music doesn't play until you unlock the shortcut house.

Don't worry, it's not a bug. That music doesn't play until you unlock the shortcut house.

It won't affect that much, also it's only a few textures in the mines. Would hardly affect it at all.

Probably make them from scratch. The fun part won't be making them. The fun part will be getting to hell to see if they look ok.

Extract the .wad and .wad.wix into your Spelunky/Data/Textures folder.
Backing up your current files before overwriting might be a good idea.

If you get to the City of Gold with this pack. Please post pictures! I haven't been since I replaced the textures there.

There's some incredibly wonky textures in places. The level borders being a big one, my buddy was having some trouble getting them to look right again after he fixed the resolution. Trees are also wonky, as is Ice. There's loads of things that haven't been replaced yet, but this should give you an idea of how it's going.

Also you might want to remove the Minecraft mod from the list in the first post. That's not something I'm working on. Just something I was doing while I figured out how it all fit together. I don't have the files for it anymore.

It's 5AM so I'm out for a while, any suggestions, questions etc feel free to let me know and I'll read them when I wake up.

I went an made a mod specifically for people who are using a PS3 controller to emulate a 360 controller via MotionInJoy or similar. All it does is replace the control prompts in the UI with PS3 buttons. I.e., X becomes square, etc.

I also made a mod that gets rid of the massive banners in the upper-left corner of the screen, allowing you to what's going on up there more easily.

I guess you'd just make the game run the level generation engine that is used for Yeti Kingdom levels so you wouldn't instantly fall to your death, cut out the Yeti King and add the darkness?

There's even beta music (http://phlogiston.bandcamp.com/track/ice-caves-dim-2) already composed.

I've no idea how hard that would be to implement, and it's probably too ambitious a project to undertake at this early stage but it would be pretty cool to see at some point.

You can only edit sprites, textures and audio on Spelunky HD.
Also, there weren't Dark Ice levels in Classic either (because that would've made the game too hard).
Would definitely like to hear that music in the game, though.

According to my first line, it's impossible to implement in the game by us, only the developers(Derek and Andy) can do that.

I was wondering if you can simply add new characters or do you have to replace the existing ones with different sprites?

Also, here is a mod I made, fixing the ears of the ninja.
Maybe you didn't notice, but the climbing sprites of the ninja are inconsistent with his other sprites: his ears are suddenly "out in the open" and not covered by his hood. I've posted about it on reddit (I'm bens15 over there, maybe you've seen my posts).

Doesn't replace all the new music that came in the HD (Like the hell or worm), and I might consider doing the sound effects sometime in the future too.

To install: 1) Go to your Spelunky installation folder and go to "Data"
2) BACKUP YOUR "MUSIC FOLDER"
3) Replace the "music" folder with the one in the zip.

Good, you're still working on it.
BTW, the terrain shadow and the existence of the tile border makes it feel less Classic.

Actually, it looks quite nice.

I would suggest you make the wood texture a bit more brownish.

I like the wood texture but I guess I could see room for improvement.

So, it started with blurring the background texture for a faux DoF effect but then I just got rid of the backgrounds completely and I love it! I dunno why but I like it better like this. Maybe it just reminds me of the dungeons in smb...

Yes, I did that too. I was messing with textures just to see if I can do something and I did that.

I.. have absolutely no idea. There's literally no reason whatsoever I can see as to why it would do that.

1) Your sprites are aligned correctly
2) They're sized correctly
3) You haven't done something silly like save it as a GIF then resaved as a PNG so it only has binary transparency
4) The overall spritesheet is the right size

I honestly have absolutely no concrete clue why it's doing it. The transparency is perfect, the edges are perfect, and what's more it works perfectly fine in-game.

I've got some theories though, and it's bugging me, so I'm trying to figure it out.. I'll post back if I manage. :P

Edit: The only idea I had to attempt to fix it (which was adjusting the edge of the sprite that's displayed on the character select screen, the upper-left one) failed. I tried trimming a few pixels off the edge just to see if that did anything, and it did no good.

The theory I had was that since on the character select screen the sprite is actually enlarged that SOMEHOW this was being performed badly, and the edge transparency suffered, but it doesn't seem that's the case, since all of the other characters are fine. I'm at a loss for now, but I'll be continually having a stab at it until I, or someone else figures it out. This is an odd one!

Are you sure that there aren't any white pixels around the character's sprite?
Is it ONLY in the character selection screen?

I'm making progress, and I think I've narrowed down the problem.

Notice how the only white parts on the in-game version here are where the transparency is very soft, and very slight? I've got a theory that somehow the frame the game settles on (the still frame) on the character select screen is enlarged in a way that somehow breaks transparency, only counts levels below a certain amount as being transparent, or.. it dithers it badly for some reason.

Got another test coming up in a second to confirm this, and if I'm right, a (potential) fix!

Edit: Okay, seems my theory's right. Just going to do one last test to confirm it, but here's a preliminary:

As I'm sure you can see, the transparency there is being completely screwed, and there's little doubt in my mind that this is a bug in the game. I'll be posting a few more screenshots after this with the same transparency thing on all frames of the spritesheet just to see if the same transparency issue is shown on them. (I suspect it won't be)

Okay, here (http://www.alandavison.co.uk/images/spelunky_hd/transparencybug.png) is a demonstration of the bug. Just fiddling with the sprites a little to see if I can fix the edges. It may well be possible. I'll edit this post again (for the billionth time, or something! :P) with the results.

Final edit: End result is I don't think there's anything that can be done. Even after removing all variable transparency (so there's no fading, just the black outline and then transparency), there are still massive ugly white borders around it. I'm absolutely clueless, but I'm going to through another another thread in the bug report forum for this!

Unsurprisingly, the spritesheet for the helping hand maps directly to the playable character's spritesheets.

But, we can't just make him playable by installing it as a mod, as the spritesheet's incomplete (no ghost sprites, meta sprites such as the heart and the bag, and no sprite of him falling out of the volcano).

Yeah, got those already (source (http://www.spriters-resource.com/pc_computer/spelunky/)). Just unsure measuring the exact sizes myself.

You can rename your Spelunky steam folder and re-download the game via steam to get it. I would give it to you but I feel that would be unfair to Eirik Suhrke who created the music.

Just out of curiosity, do people not know how to edit the in-game text for their mods? It's very easy to do, and I noticed a few themed mods could really do with some text editing, such as the Mario Bros one. I edited the text in the Vinesauce Mod in the OP, I can do a short post explaining how if people want!

Darn, beat me to it!

Want to add something important, however. There are some invisible line separators in some of the strings, that if you accidentally delete when editing text, it will break some of the messages (they will display as ERROR:STRING_NOT_FOUND). So when editing, start from the middle of the part you want to edit, and backspace to the beginning of it. Do not just highlight the part you want to edit and erase or you might snag this divider. Example:

IDS_LEVEL_OLMECOLM[put cursor here and backspace]EC'S LAIR

This is a problem that can't be solved soo easily, you either choose another default program to open or search on google on how to fix this. I tried to solve your problem, ended up making default program to open the .wad files Adobe Reader. Oh crap! D:


Okay, I solved it!
1. Go to Start and type Run and enter.
2. Type regedit in Run.
3. In Regedit(Registry Editor), got to this directory:
    "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > wad_auto_file
4. Delete the 'wad_auto_file' folder.

Problem solved! It will now ask for which program to use to open it as before. :)

So I lazily added a pencil sketch effect (and a few other ones) in Paint.net for my character and it turned out to look pretty good:

Me and my brother though it would be cool to change the sound of lasergun, so it gives you a cue when it is ready for next shot. We recorded "chaaaariiiiin" with silly voices and put it after the sound effect so we have a feeling when to shoot.

People have also tried editing sounds, but it happens to be buggy for all. Sorry, no fix.

I wonder if that'll fix the issue im having with a feint white line appearing when I grab ropes (it's only when the rope is still dangling though and the character gets rocked back and forth as they climb)

Maybe there are some other issues with Photoshop that I'm unaware of, but in terms of the faint white outline thing, the 1% opacity thing 100% fixed it. Which sorta means for this particular problem, best bet is to select all, move in any direction to have it outline all areas of the spritesheet that has opacity, move it back into original spot, expand selection by 1 pixel, create a layer beneath the spritesheet, fill or draw at 1%, flatten, save.

Anyway, the thing I've been working on for like, the past week? A skin of Young, who is the main character from Anodyne, an indie game that's sort of like if Yume Nikki had a baby with Link's Awakening (I like it a lot go play it).

It's also needed for the Deathmatch, as that mode also has ghosts in it.

Also, the character head, the cursor, the circle and the money bag are all used in multiplayer.

(From what I can tell, the cursor, the head and the circle combine to be used as a marker to tell others where the player is off screen. The Moneybag with all the loot of the character appears whenever he gets killed.)

Also, Bae, I like what you did to the skin to add meta info to the sheet itself, as no one had done that before. :)

On that note if you want to be less lazy (or heck I'll even do it for you and let you paste back the BB code in a post edit) splitting the texture mods into characters and other (or even level texture packs and other) would be very nice for finding stuff easier, I mean most people probably just want to see a list of what characters they can download.

Also thinking about making a mirror to this thread on steam but hmm that might make less traffic come here and thats a no no

I thought of this idea too (when the mods started increasing to huge amounts), but separating them one-by-one was too troublesome for me. I'll do it myself if you could wait a day or two (I can't suddenly spend hours now separating those), or you might do it yourself if you're really impatient about it.

Yeah. Anyway, there were couple of mods posted in the Steam forums too, which I haven't added it here. And seeing how problematic it is to manage the thread here, there is definitely no way that I'm going to do the same mistake again.

A terrible user spammed here with inappropriate images.
Marsgreekgod, a moderator left, because he's just tired of cleaning this mess.
Thus, making the spambots win.
Wonkyth, another mod returns, cleans the spam.
But the spambots are everywhere, advertising in a dead forum.
Everybody leaves.
Derek doesn't know and/or even care.

Yeah, I find it strange that a game as ridiculously amazing and awesome as Spelunky has forums as dead as this. It's not like it's a super obscure game either.

I can't fathom it, if I was Derek and had created a game such as Spelunky (and really it's so more than just a game  :D ) I would totally have an awesome community and forums, mod support etc.. But that's just me I guess

Part of the problem, a bunch of people that complain the forum is dead, have < 1 post per day, and then theres the issue of most people never post in any of the other boards to talk about other things, even the matter of spambots doesnt get posted in something like the offtopic topic, it ends up in the spelunky board because no one ever posts anywhere else

I thought Bushland A.K.A GrassTown would be more suitable for Jungle, but the current one is not bad either. I wonder what you might do to the ice in the third area.

I don't really remember CaveStory having an "icy" world, so I think that's the only possible texture for the Ice Caves. Are you using any normal map generator? There possibly are some free ones that can give satisfactory results (or maybe not; I'm just an idiot).

The shadow might look a bit weird, but you can turn it off. Making an entirely new sprite-sheet for a character is definitely going to take some time. Then there's the three damsels. Pug should be a mimiga.


Yeah I made the Pug and Damsel player mods when modding first became a thing. It's been awhile since then, cool that you remember me though!
Yeah, I remember many of the names of that time. That was probably one of the times Mossmouth was active. Then everybody lost interest, the forum drama drove the remaining away, the spam bots ruled this place till Derek got informed, and now the place is similar to a graveyard. And sadly, Derek said he probably won't make another game (of the level of Spelunky) till 4 years. So there we go, Mossmouth's funeral. :(

how do you get rid of that icy shine on ice textures when you replace it? you seem to have kept the sparkle but got rid of the shine on the ice somehow

Change it to suit your needs. I gave the ice a really dulled shine, since it's not ice, it's worn out metal.

Yeah, that's a good point. It's not very ice-like...maybe if it was shinier, it'd be more visibly "slippery".
