Title: No action button, no damage run video
Post by: Kefit on November 11, 2009, 04:37:37 AM
I managed to do a full run through the game without using the action button or taking any damage. Better yet, I managed to get it on video. Not using the action button means that I can never pick up any items or use my whip. My only way to defeat enemies is to jump on their heads or to use the ropes or bombs I start with. Be sure to have annotations turned on, as I have provided commentary for this run.

Blame goes to eguee for giving me the idea to do this through a random post in an old topic I happened to read.

I'm trying to think up a new challenge to do with this game, but everything I can think of either pales in comparison to this or is too heavily reliant on luck (speedruns, getting the ball and chain for ball and chain runs, etc). Any ideas?

Very impressive, and a few good tips I hadn't thought of too. So many times there I see myself dying, or accidentally pressing attack. Sorry though, no ideas for other challenges, unless you want to take the Eguee challenge thread.

Wow. Nice run. The only thing I can think of that'd be more challenging would be without the bombs or flares, but that'd really be more about dumb luck than skill.

Very nice run! I like it a lot.

Welcome Kefit.

How... would you say that? Kefit?

Uh oh eguee, you've got some competition on your hands!

And I never thought of reading the level layout to find my way to the exit! Very impressive indeed!

Eguee is much better than I am, if my failed attempts at completing his Ascent stage are any indication.

Which is really kind of a scary thought.

I know I already posted this as a comment at YouTube, but it bears repeating: killing enemies with ropes = awesome. Especially when you would've needed to use a rope there anyway.

Very inspiring. I realize this was a stunt, not represented as the ideal way to play, but it made me realize I spend way too much time messing around getting items and stuff. I succeeded in finishing the game without using shortcuts for the first time shortly afterwards.

I love getting blame.

Now do one without jumps. I did it, and nearly ran of ropes.
Edit:

Don't worry. I took longer to do that than both of MMG's levels combined.

I've done a no-action-button run all the way to the boss... twice.

Then I died because I forgot to throw ropes up. Spiders jumped on me.

I've died numerous times at the boss on a no action run. It's really a complete crap shoot, depending on how the enemies spawn.

Seriously? I can't even imagine doing this.

On a side note, I've been working on the so called eguee challenge lately. It's far, far more difficult than it initially sounded. It would be pretty easy without having to get either the saves or the kills, but both of those combined is a nightmare. My best run so far ran mockingly short:

You have to be very lucky for the saves. Get most of your kills on the boss. Speed through all non-boss levels.

I had never thought of farming kills on the boss. I guess that really would be the way to do it. Most of the loot can come from the boss' attic now that I think about it.

Though that would be less interesting than my current panicked attempts to do everything possible at once while praying that I get jetpack and shotgun for the ice caves (which I didn't in the run the screenshot is from). Really, ditching a shotgun for a damsel at the top of a stage when you know an angry shopkeeper is waiting at the bottom is SO MUCH FUN.

But I've been trying to do this for a couple of weeks now, it might be time to take the easy way out and put it to rest.
