Title: Make the ball & chain a gameplay choice
Post by: ipwnu1337 on October 26, 2009, 08:46:33 PM
I like the ball & chain so much that I would like for it to be instantly accessible once you do something to unlock it, like playing the damsel or tunnel man.

Maybe there could be a trophy for the most altars defiled during a run.  That would be awesome.

4thed.

And I'd also like an option where the ghost limit timer is 5 seconds.

Ahem.  I feel so "unreasonable."  Or a "no one."

Anyway, I don't support this idea as-is, so I hadn't commented on it.  I see how it would be fun, and so I support the inevitable mod that will allow it.  But the suggestion that it be an unlockable "feature" seems odd: if there's something like that you want unlocked, you might as well request a "start with any particular item or condition like ball and chain, or ghost (http://mossmouth.com/forums/index.php?topic=306.msg4286#msg4286), or, I dunno, jetpack" unlockable.  That would satisfy more people.

A special mode added to the vanilla game, complete with an entire new "changing room" door and fundamental title region redesign, for a ball and chain?  A little excessive.

No not really becuse getting the ball and chain could be a lot harder the getting a jet back in some cases.

Well, I'm not talking about the difficulty of this unlocking challenge: I'm talking about the fundamental idea of it being something you unlock.  In short, this feels more like a mod than a standard feature.  I support it as the former, not the latter.

We never said unlock. We said choice.

I think making it an option would degrade the surprise and punishment that it has as is. What would be your punishment if you already had a ball & chain? Another one?

The same thing it normal is in the game.

and it's meant be hard, not something you do for fun...

IDEA!

not the ball a chain a game play choice, but a char you can unlock that has it. The prisoner, he has a ball and chain no matter what and no weapon on his own.

That would be awesome.

Prisoner unlock : Kill 8 shopkeepers and defile at least 4 altars in a run.

Yeah, cruel, but if you get to the black market, not so much.

Maybe it could be if you defile 2 altars as the prisoner, the ball & chain becomes heavier?

That sounds good to me.

What?  I'm not trying to be confrontational, but dude, when did this conversation go so weird?

When you say that I don't have a good point, I presume you are referring to the same thing you wrote earlier:

We never said unlock. We said choice.
If that is what you mean, then I have been waiting since yesterday for you to realize you made a mistake.  Reread the original post.  This entire conversation has been about "unlocking" a special mode.  Then, once you have it, of course you'd have the "choice" of using it.  Everything I've said so far about how I'd rather see a mod for this than see it put in the base game still holds.  It's not a very important point, and I don't want to fight over it, but I want the least for there to be any silly misunderstandings.

And none of this weirdness prevents me from saying that I like the gameplay idea itself, or that I like your recent idea for a prisoner.  A special character to unlock, who would logically have a ball and chain, seems cool.

Did a quick concept art of what the prisoner would look like:

It looks like the Ball & chain DOES NOT appear on the winning screen if you beat the game with it.

Were you holding it in your hands when you went through the door INTO the final level?  There is that known bug where whatever was in your hands then appears during the final animation, even if you drop it and/or pick up something new.

I know, the thing should still be trailing behind you if you weren't holding it; but knowing this detail could help with pinning down the issue.

It is impossible to carry the ball and chain through to the next level; you must drop it whenever you go through a door.

I'll bet this is to prevent a bug in which you have TWO ball and chains attached to you, since the game probably does not track the ball & chain in your hands.  It will probably not detect a ball & chain trailing you, and attach another o.O.

Also they game is coded not to let you carry any "heavy" items threw the door.

Either way, it ends up with you not allowing to carry the ball and chain through a door.

I always imagined the prisoner would just be some Spelunker who got caught instead of killed when he was wanted.

Ok then. I got the ball and chain for the first time yesterday... it's hard!

Also when you die you don't get held to the chain but the chain still gos back to the ball making it so the chain gets really long
