Title: Gaming General
Post by: Wonkyth on February 03, 2013, 12:38:51 AM
I was just thinking that it might be nice to have a thread dedicated to general discussion of gaming, especially related to gaming news and the likes; stuff that wouldn't really merit it's own thread, and is a bit more gaming-related that stuff we might throw in the off-topic thread. :P

In this case, try to keep it topical, bringing opinion, discussion and new information/news etc. to the table. :)

To start things off, I thought I might throw up this article from our good friends over at IndieStatik:
ProtEAs: Electronic Arts reveal their plan to take Proteus down (http://indiestatik.com/2013/02/01/proteas-electronic-arts-reveal-their-plan-to-take-proteus-down/).
The cast:
-Proteus, an explorative, experiential art-game that has been selling like hot-cakes;
-Electronic Arts (EA), a large-scale game publisher which has for some time been a by-word for stupid. (note: impartiality not guaranteed. :P )
-(various videogame consumers)

The story goes a little like this:
<Proteus Hey, I'm a game where you walk around on a colourful island, gently interacting with things, gentle ambient music being awesome all the while!
<Consumer_1> Hey Proteus, you're pretty sweet!
<Consumer_2> Yeah, that music is smooth. :)
<Consumer_3> I don't see what all the fuss is about. I mean, there's not even a goal. >_>
<Consumer_4> OMG THOSE CRABS ARE SO KAWAII! *\^_^/*
<Consumer_5> ^Dafuq that guy on? o.O
<Consumer_3> What crabs? All I saw were coloured blobs ._.
<Proteus> Heh, didn't know I'd be so popular! :D <3
<Consumer_77> I AM BUYING THIS FOR ALL MY FRIENDS! :-]
*Consumer_77 throws munnie $$$
<EA> Ooh shinies! :D
*Proteus catches munnie $$$
<EA> :O
<EA> Didn't see THAT coming... >_>
<RandomObserver> Hey EA, aren't you into Art Games 'n' such stuffs?
<EA> ...
<EA> Oh, yeah!
<EA> Arts is my middle name! :D
<EA> ...or something like that :3
<EA> Didn't even know people would throw munnie at art, tho :S
<Consumer_128613> lolderp! xD
<EA> EVERONE STOP IV AN IDEA!  ;D
<People> Yeh?
<EA> Gonna maek a game. :3
<People> Yeh?
<EA> Gonna be called ProtEAs. :3
<EA> Gonna make a zombie version 2! ^_^
<People> o.O
<OtherPeople> >_<
<EA> It'll be called ProZeas.
<EA> geddit!!!! xD
<World> STAHP! ;~;

...and I'm tired.
If you're still reading by this point, then it should be fairly obvious that it's satire, pure and simple, playing out what might possibly happen if the likes of EA were ever to attempt such a reformation, and dive into the world of games that aren't 'bout shooting thangs.

Discuss? :P
(note: feel free to keep it light-hearted on this one. It's not for realz, after all. ^_^ )

This is what I spend my time doing when I don't have a working computer. :[

Well, this article somehow reminded me of this - Play4Real (http://www.p4rgaming.com), the ultimate fake humorous/ trolling news resource for gaming industry.

- Riots breakout in South Korea after foreigners win local StarCraft tournament
- Bronies reveal future pony mod library spanning hundreds of games
- Next Xbox will have 15-second Ad play each time a game is loaded

All right, then I would also like to talk about Portal and Portal 2.
So... who else thinking Valve half-changed the game after Kim left? Who else thinking Portal was the story and Portal 2 was the show?

Title: Re: Gaming General
Post by: kj979 on February 04, 2013, 03:10:29 PM
On a somewhat related note, I preferred Portal to Portal 2, but not because of the story, because of the gameplay. I didn't have much fun with the open segments. (not elaborating, for spoilers sake)

Title: Re: Gaming General
Post by: Arucard on February 05, 2013, 05:07:02 AM
I felt the opposite, like Portal was almost a tech demo with some story attached. Portal 2 has much more story imbedded, background on characters and Aperture itself, much longer, (depending on your head for puzzles) and there's actually a character arc which you don't really see in the original.

In more general news, I'm really glad indie gaming has become so popular, but I wish the big studios would take a hint and start working outside their comfort zones, forget about Kinects and 3D gimmicks and start thinking how to make something original from the ground up. Practically nothing in the mainstream market interests me at all anymore, unless it's from 10 years ago. Especially re-make/boot/imagining/plagiarism like emo-Devil May Cry. (haven't played, might be good, I'll never know)

It's more then just a nextgen Minecraft. This guy made software capable to generate houses (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V04dswEIcQU), castles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XqXY3miBck) or even fantastic cities (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-jHy7-fIhc) out of scripts. And this thing is amazing.

Well, I think I put a bit of ambiguity into my post, sorry.
The home/castle/city are not voxel-based, actually (though, in the video I posted, the landscape and the towers are made of voxels, for sure). But it doesn't matter - there is much more advantage in using both of conceptions. And this guy don't want anybody to call his game a Minecraft clone.

I've just brought the game, so of course I'd be a rookie.

I'd prefer to play creative mode and explore, as there's no health, food problems, you can fly and you can spawn anything you want.

I need to learn how to play survival mode.

I'm also nervous for multiplayer.  :-\

I'm not sure, but on a related note, why are people opposed to Origin? I get that it's the only way to get EA products nowadays, but it's the same with Valve. They both have always-online game play (with a workaround for Steam), so the only difference is the games and the sales, as far as I can see. This has always confused me.

Title: Re: Gaming General

EA has made some fantastic games, in the past at least, but they seem incapable of acting in a way that benefits the gaming ecosystem.

Title: Re: Gaming General
Post by: Arucard on February 13, 2013, 07:32:33 AM
My last gripe with them was shutting down servers which makes me unplug the ethernet cable if I want to play Mercenaries 2. Otherwise it freezes at the title after about a minute. Hard to believe there's no other work-around for this, like patch the game so it doesn't look for non-existant servers maybe?

But they seem to push developers to release on their (EA's) schedule no matter how it might hurt the game. Also they tried to buy Take 2, HAH! Also as well, I have heard of them turning down a number of games because they can't be exploited on a yearly bases, can't remember exactly how it was worded, but basically that.

People also don't like Origin for privacy concerns, the fact that you have to give up legal rights to sue them in order to use their clients, etc.

Germany itself especially doesn't like it, as the terms and conditions are actually ILLEGAL there (it was translated directly into German unchanged).

- 5 Creepy Ways Video Games Are Trying to Get You Addicted (http://www.cracked.com/article_18461_5-creepy-ways-video-games-are-trying-to-get-you-addicted.html)
- Behavioral Game Design (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3085/behavioral_game_design.php?page=1)

Although those articles are a bit dated, this issue is just getting worse.  Yes, you should be concerned as a *citizen*, not just a gamer, because gamification is spilling over into every other marketable part of our lives, and they're using these techniques. It's already been around for ages with businesses that have point ("rewards") cards. Now every store has no choice but to have a rewards card, or else they will lose customers to the competitors that do.

Speaking of 'evil' EA, check out their freemium Simpson's Tapped Out! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Simpsons:_Tapped_Out) on mobile/tablet for a great example of a game that is expertly designed to waste your time and keep you coming back for more. Look past those familiar characters and catch-phrases and you'll see there there is NO gameplay. The clever thing is, the game makes fun of the addictiveness of these types of games, and the storyline in the game is based on it. Mobile and 'social' games are some of the worse offenders for this, especially anything that progresses in real-time whether you are logged on or not: "My crops will be ready for harvest in 10 hours...3am?" *Sets alarm* But if you want that task to finish instantly, purchase coins/gems/donuts now!. So...you are paying for the privilege of NOT playing the game?

I thought MMOs were bad, but at least there are actual social aspects to them and gameplay that requires skill and coordination in between all the grindy bits.

More recently, a potentially great game by a cool developer ruined by freemium, time-wasting schemes is American McGee's Akaneiro: Demon Hunters (http://www.angry-red.com/).

Now more and more developers are forced to take their game to the free-to-play business model just to stay in the competition. If people can play a game for free - any genre now: RPG, action, FPS, strategy - not just shitty facebook games anymore, why would they pay $20-60 up front?

(Related to previous posts...another jab at EA: When the Origin client was released I had to install it just to reactivate and play my Steam copy of Alice: Madness Returns which I had purchased and already played on Steam a year earlier ...the fuck? As if Steam wasn't enough.)

@kj979
I meant you don't have to bother about it.

@Nathan Cash
Sure, it depends on consumer's average.

Well, apparently, I used a wrong word, my fault. It's "shifted", not "reduced".

For example, as I don't really like the story on Portal 2, it's still a good story. And don't get me wrong, my taste is not better or worse then average, it's just different. I just like the struggle of intellects, "I have no mouth" and "Escape!" themes of first the Portal more then comic relief, Half-Life references and GLaDOS humanity of second one. But most of Portal players really does. So what? It's normal the overall game's theme shifted to pleasure the most consumer's tastes. That's how things works.

Title: Re: Gaming General
Post by: Arucard on February 19, 2013, 08:48:30 AM
Which is also the reason for the downfall of commercial gaming, as I said before the developers aren't taking chances and trying to do something interesting anymore (for the most part) they are only concerned with what will rake in the most money. The irony being, what really draws attention and makes money is new and interesting themes that people haven't seen before.

Look at Dwarf Fortress, a game that's been in alpha for over five years and continues to gain fans while the developer is supported solely on the donations of those fans. He doesn't need DLC to keep it going, and while some things may be added as a result of the fanbase, it's Toady's own vision that pushes the game forward.

This is why I've been so much more interested in indie games for all this time, they have no one to answer to, they're putting out something they believe is fun and interesting and if it does well, great. It's a similar effect to big box retailers versus local businesses.

Title: Re: Gaming General
Post by: Nathan on February 19, 2013, 01:39:07 PM
Big devs never try innovative ideas, they just stick with what works. Eventually the world will get tired of Call of Duty, then what? No big company would ever try a game like Fez or Snapshot based solely on the fact that it has never been tried before. They rely on constant profits, while indie devs could not care less how much revenue their game makes (more is still better).

Well Phil Fish said he won't port Fez to Steam even though it would make him millions of dollars because he envisioned people playing Fez on a console on their couch when he made it.

Title: Re: Gaming General
Post by: kj979 on February 19, 2013, 04:47:24 PM
I do agree that indie game devs, on average, care more about the games and less about the money than big publishers. However, I think there are some game companies that care about their games (i.e. Blizzard) and some indie companies that care more about their money (i.e. Zynga, not sure if it's indie anymore).

Title: Re: Gaming General
Post by: kj979 on February 19, 2013, 07:48:14 PM
What is the big deal with Warz?
They basically are cashing in on DayZ as fast as they can, without actually making anything good. They did a revamp or something on their WarInc engine and made WarZ, which is basically just a rip off of DayZ. Then anyone who criticized it and/or requested a refund was usually, if not always banned from their game/forums and even sometimes blacklisted. It was released in Steam as a full game, with the description listing many things the game did not have, and then was removed from Steam because of this. The game itself: it basically runs off pay-2-win style purchases. If you die, you have to either wait 4 hours to respawn as you rprevious character or you lose all your equipment, etc and have to respawn as a non-equipped character. Also, the terms of service were literally a direct rip off of the League of Legends TofS, without even the names changed. Screenshot: http://www.topshotta.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/WarZ-LoL-ToS.jpg

Source: google "reddit warz" , second link. (can't get on due to parental filter, sorry)

EDIT: Also, the main developer/project lead or whatever, Sergey Titov was also involved in the creation of Big Rigs Racing, widely considered one of, if not the, worst video games of all time.

Well Phil Fish said he won't port Fez to Steam even though it would make him millions of dollars because he envisioned people playing Fez on a console on their couch when he made it.
Funny he should say that, what with Fez coming to Steam an' all. :P

Of course, not all indie devs are saints either. Remember all the zombie and minecraft clones on XBLIG are indie too. As are the dating sims, and the zombie mining avatar dating sims.

It's funny, I was just looking at PSN earlier and it seemed so strange to me how few zombie games there were.

Also on the flip side, there are a number of big name devs who really care about their products. Atlus always seems to show a lot of love to their fans. And whatever you think personally about Peter Molyneux, I love how excited he gets talking about his games. He clearly loves and believes in what he does.

Zombies = 'oh man can't think of a good game let's cash out on stupid people'. It's ironic, because zombies are meant to be consumer culture.

1. I have no problem with Zombies, although they are often used very lazily in the place of something more inspiring; They may be universal, but that also means they're less specific.
2. Molyneux is a visionary, and his vision is one I happen to agree with. Whatever else he may have done -- or failed to do -- makes little difference. If other people got of their arses and attempted similar ideas, they'd most likely be met with a similar level of failure. Not that I'm a fan of reverting to the "YOU try doing it" form of defence, as it's a complete straw-man, but in this case I think people have unrealistic expectations. I, for one, don't expect Molyneux to succeed often. However, I still share his vision. :)

I think he's referring to the original intention and symbolism that Romero and the old movies (like Last Man on Earth (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058700/)) used zombies to represent. They really were representing our increasingly mindless consumer culture and sheep-like nature. But now, yes they are just another thing to shoot, and an easy way to add DLC to your game. It was cute at first, but then every damn game started doing it.

I kinda wanted to do a zombie game review show, as a zombie, and the only game I would like is Stubbs.  ;D

A really awesome, quality look at Western vs Japanese games (http://www.animenation.net/forums/blog.php?b=330).

EDIT:

Looked throught there before on my phone.

That person's not a scholar, and isn't entirely accurate (like, as one person pointed out in the comments, Japan DID create high quality simulators like soccer games that's not released out of Japan that I think is popular there).

Also, generalisation that involves comparing gameplay styles instead of preference would results in Japanese games being considered "western games" and western games being considered "Japanese games".

It's the same to the international meaning of anime: There's people who consider all cartoons in Japan to be anime even if it's art style doesn't resemble typical anime at all, well western cartoons won't be considered "true anime" even if it's in the typical anime-style.

Title: Re: Gaming General
Post by: Wonkyth on February 28, 2013, 06:08:02 AM
Perhaps, but that's just arguing semantics. In this case the aim is simply a useful generalisation based upon two friends' discussion of the differences between them. :)

What on earth is wrong with judging a game by it's creator?
I hadn't played it until yesterday, so it's not as though I had any preconceptions of it's worth; I was only aware that it existed as a game.
Since Eyemaze has created consistently amazing games, then yes, I'm willing to +1 it to oblivion. :P
Historic evidence pretty much says that The Black Box is amazing, and unsurprisingly it was. :)

I don't JUDGE games based on their creator, but I do EXPECT a certain level of awesome from talented developers. ;)

The Cutting Room Floor (http://tcrf.net/The_Cutting_Room_Floor) is a site dedicated to unearthing and researching unused and cut content from video games.
From debug menus, to unused music, graphics, enemies, or levels, many games have content never meant to be seen by anybody but the developers - or even meant for everybody, but cut due to time/budget constraints.

Capcom cancelled Megaman Legends 3!

How dare they? It is, it is... It was such an awesome game series and they cancelled it. For what? For making Resident Evil 6?

I didn't know there were plans to make a third in the first place. So it's all new to me I guess. Oh well, I'm sure there are still plans to do a (HD) remake of the original anyway.  :P ::) :-\

But yeah, I know Bastion is supposed to be pretty good, I tried to play the demo but it was pretty choppy so I'd have to get it on 360. RPGs have been less interesting to me lately anyway though, apart from most ATLUS stuff. And I tried to play Silver Star Harmony the other day and it froze on me...In case anyone was wondering. :) ;) ;D :D

You mean, Lunar: The Silver Star Harmony? Oh my, I like this series so much!

For the MML3, I watched some MML3 arts and MML2 videos recently and was amazed, such a different world Capcom built upon MM franchise. The concepts of riverbots, they are so awesome. And they managed to make such a nice graphics for PS1.
Capcom says, they canceled MML3 because they got too much MegaMan spin-offs. Sure thing, but such a beautiful world? And what they did instead? New part with iconic MegaMan?

No, the Rockman Xover.

Oh my.

Title: Re: Gaming General
Post by: Arucard on March 25, 2013, 09:41:25 PM
Haven't really heard of any other spin-offs (oh wait, wasn't there a game starring Tronn Bonne?), plus with the success of the classic style 9 & 10 they should really have moved forward with another Legends, even if 2 wasn't all that popular. They could have at least made it a download game.

Also, yes Lunar is one of the best RPGs ever! This and Wild Arms fueled my desire for RPG and anime when I was younger. SSH is actually a worthy remake (unlike so many), and if you know me you know how much I hate remakes. Only bad thing is they added new lyrics to the songs which basically breaks my heart, I loved the old ones so much. And the girl who sings these is not as good as the old one, I think it's the same girl doing Luna's voice too.

Well, it's tricky, as The Misadventures of Tron Bonne is the spin-off of MegaMan Legends, which is the spin-off of MegaMan. Yeah.

Currently I'm playing MML2 via emulator. Such an awesome game, why it's so unpopular? There are such incredible riverbot designs! And treasure chest mimics makes me shivers, all the time.

With all that Duck Tales HD release, I could imagine they would make a new large scale Duck Tales game with MML mechanics - RPG with RTA dungeon crawler elements. Wandering the world on the airplane, searching the treasure map parts, exploring dungeons, gathering the treasures - it fits perfect.

That's a great way of discouraging piracy. Nicely done on their part.

Title: Re: Gaming General
Post by: KarjamP on April 29, 2013, 10:35:45 AM
Well, at least the devs are putting the gamers in their shoes to tell them how they feel when others pirate their games.

Although sooner or later, the fake version would be put down and a legitimately cracked version (one without the others "pirating" the player's games), and the pirates would be happy.

Although the true Pirates won't listen to their message and pirate the software properly anyway.

Title: Re: Gaming General
Post by: Nathan on April 29, 2013, 11:12:17 AM
And that is why I don't pirate current games. Just roms since those can't be bought from the dev anymore. Not that that is okay...

Barely noticed Monaco came out, too busy with Gunpoint's beta. What I did play kinda pissed me off that I have to basically stand there and get beat up. Why can't I hit back? Meh, Nintendo doesn't really make a profit off of GBA games anymore. So I don't have a problem emulating.

But now that I actually have money I'd feel bad if I pirated anything

Until later in this year, that is, as Nintendo's planning of selling GBA games on the Wii U Virtual Console (and maybe the 3DS as well).

Simple: find a free indie game that's calling for testers, and throw yourself into it. I mean THROW!
You show people that you can provide useful results. Try doing a short-but-thorough testing of small games that pop up on TIGsource or something. That way you can build up sheer numbers in your 'portfolio'. :P
Then, see if you can attach yourself to a slightly larger project, one that is making full use of bugtrackers and the likes. That should help you get a foot in the door. :)

A couple of recent web games I've been playing:

If you've read any gaming blog/news sites in the past week you've heard of Candy Box:
http://candies.aniwey.net/
I thought it was a joke/troll game at first, but you have to give it a bit of time. Things are revealed as you play. It has many elements of  addictive rpg/grind mobile games and MMORPGs but its free and there's no ads or coins to purchase to advance. Oh..and it's in ASCII.

GeoGuessr
http://geoguessr.com/
This plops you down at random location in the world in Google Street View, and you try to guess where you are by placing a pin on the world map. Your score is based on how far off you were from the correct location. You can't zoom out from street view, but you can pan around to look for clues.
You guess 5 locations each round..here's the results of a round - red pins are my guess, green the correct locations:

My treasure hunting equipment:

The belt:
Iron sword (for tight quarters fights), the bow (for ranged fights), torches (for light and to keeping monsters away), melon slices (for fast snacks), pumpkin (in case of Endermans), pair of shears (in case of tripwires), arrows (for shooting creepers), map (for logging the process), compass (for keeping direction).

The bag:
Lighter (for TNT), TNT (for heavy digging), ladders (for holes in the ground), "field redstone pack": levers, redstone dust, redstone torches, pistons, sticky pistons; clock (to keep time), steel pickaxe (for looting valuable ores), steel shovel (for fast ground digging), stone pickaxes (for digging plain stone and stuff), stone swords (for food hunting), stone axe (for tree cutting), diamond sword (for serious threats), fried beef (for big snack time and healing), milk buckets (antidotes), ender pearls (for hard reaching places), "leaving the party pack": potion of night vision, potion of speed, potion of invisibility, potion of healing.

Guess, why I don't do treasure hunting in Minecraft very often.

Title: Re: Gaming General

Where are you going to put the treasure, may I ask?

Title: Re: Gaming General
Post by: q0099 on May 15, 2013, 03:14:22 PM
Well, exactly that's why I don't do treasure hunting - I have no place for loot.

Actually, I could throw away second row of the bag, change redstone pack for iron pickaxe and three stone pickaxes and use diamond sword instead of iron, which gives me one free row for loot. Or I could leave redstone pack and throw away the second row - depends on rules I play.

Title: Re: Gaming General
Post by: KarjamP on May 16, 2013, 02:28:11 AM
Or you could build a track from where you were, get a chest on a kart, then, when you treasure hunt, just put the treasure in the chest-on-kart and then push it to the surface when you're done.

Only with Youtube videos when it comes to monetization. :P

Anyway, they have a right to do that.

I presume they're doing that so that they can advertise their own products on gameplay videos.

If you say it's morally wrong to do it, let me just say that everyone has different ideas to what's morally right and what's morally wrong.

Like, the Free Software Federation believes that the right thing to do is to open source all of your products (and AFAIK, it's wrong to not do that).

A lot of the software pirates believe that it's morally right to pirate software. Most of the devs of said software, though, don't.

So, "what Nintendo's doing is morally wrong" is more of an belief than a confirmed fact.

Hey remember when you used moral relativity bullshit to defend a genocidal madman?

Quote from: Past Hyperme
Just because people think that they're good, that doesn't make their crimes more forgivable. Also don't start on this whole 'he without sin' crap. Sure everyone has committed a 'sin' by some measure. However, that doesn't mean we can't make judgements. Nothing would ever get better if people reacted to evil with 'oh but i've also been sin'. Few people are saints, and we can't live our lives hope for one to come along and fix everything. Sure 'microtransactions in games' is hardly a subject of life and death, but treating every problem with doormat like apathy because you lack some 'moral purity' won't help change any issue, especially the big ones.

Companies have probably been screwing people over for money since the concepts were invented. That doesn't mean we should accept it.

For one, I did not defend Hitler.

I was saying he thought he was doing good, but that doesn't mean he was doing good.

But yes, he IS an example of a guy with different morality standards than ours, as he WAS doing as he thinks is the right thing.

The point is, there are people who believe Nintendo did the right thing (like on one of those blogs I had visited), and there would be others who think it's not good (same blog).

Same with pirates, who may know that it's against the law to do it, but may feel it's morally right to do it (I'm generalizing here; I know not all of them do).

And at least I'm willing to forgive those who are bashing me.

KarjamP: You are, however, not very good at playing Devil's advocate. If you continue attempting to I have no doubt you will continue to piss people off. I'm not trying to be one.

I just like rules. :P

Anyway, I was reacting to Super posting a link to a shock site, and telling him of the possible consequences.

That wasn't about me getting angry (rather, it's about the fact that he did something not good).

I can't believe you've interpret that as me attempting to do a devil's advocate.

Even if Super posting a shock site isn't what you're talking about (and you're talking about me attempting to explain away the Hitler analogy), I was just trying to explain what I think about the situation. I'm not trying to "take a position I do not necessarily agree with for the sake of the argument".

Besides, I've never heard of the term until now. :-\

According to the TF2 Wiki, "[urlhttp://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Strange]Strange[/url]" items track information such as total kills made with the item and, in case of this PDA, "Health Dispensed to Allies" and "Allies Teleported".

Yep its worth about 8 keys. He should of not opened the salvaged crate. He could of sold it for 10 keys or $20. I however traded the fifth diamondback ever crafted (also level 5) for an unusual smoking mining light. I traded that for a Stormy Storm conquistador! (A $25 upgrade)

Thing is, I didn't care about value, I wanted to try for a strange PDA, which is exactly what I got.  Also, where did you get 10 keys for the salvaged?  Both sites I use to check item prices list it at around 5 keys.

Do you know that GameMaker Language is now compiled instead of interpreted in Gamemaker:Studio (http://gmnewsbite.net/2013/04/25/llvm-gamemaker-users/)?

Whomever has GameMaker:Studio 1.2 quick do a build of Spelunky and do a Stress Test (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stress_testing)! (either by removing the dead zone and have the game spawn plenty of objects per level or, with a build of editor+, do a level with lots and lots of enemies).

EDIT: Er, nevermind. Didn't know that the current preview release is 1.1. -.-'

Spelunky hits lots of errors in GMS. Those would have to be fixed before a stress test could be performed.

As far as I know, the first game for home system with solid-filled 3d (not just wireframes) was The Sentinel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sentinel_%28video_game%29) back from 1986. Which is still awesome!
As for the models - it's hard to imagine quality tester to pass representation of large-on-screen round object, like pipe or knob, with a box, even for low budget PSX games.

I, Robot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I,_Robot_(arcade_game)), an arcade game with polygonal 3d graphics, was released in 1983, predating The Setinel by 3 years.

Well, it wasn't exact for the game system. Originally it was written for BBC Micro home computer, then ported to Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, Atari ST, Amiga and to IBM PC. It's sequel, Sentinel Returns, was developed for PSX and PC.
Currently, there are several clones of Sentinel, like The Zenith (http://johnvalentine.co.uk/zenith.php), for PC and other platforms.

What's so wrong about that?

At least it's playable in 3D on a 3DS.

Nicalis is a good company. It's just the so-called "purists" don't like the changes they bring in attempt to make the games more enjoyable (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheyChangedItNowItSucks) (and, in the case of Pixel's games, the more "faithful" translations which isn't bad in itself).

A Candy Box-inspired text game called "A Dark Room"

Instead of candy as currency, you have wood and perhaps animal parts from traps you set in the forest. I just started. Seems more story-based too...slick interface with progress bars. Not sure if there is a way to save progress.

http://adarkroom.doublespeakgames.com/

EDIt: ok, it's not really story based, but has survival elements, and you are building a community of NPCs, and you assign them jobs that affect the rate your resources are used/accumulated. Later you can explore in roguelike fashion (controlling an '@').

Edit2: Your game is saved automatically.
Bug - If you buy more than 1 compass and it breaks a certain menu, refresh/restart browser page to fix it.

Sadly i think yes but with all the Indie games and exclusives already coming to PS4 and possibly even Portable on Vita (spelunky and hopefully Don't Starve) i wouldn't mind paying a hopefully small fee for online MP (atleast it is not necessary to be online all the time and pay for used games

I see that PSN includes a collection of free games and more added every month (ps3/vita), so that makes it worth it ($50/year). PS4/Vita is appealing for me to get back into consoles. I'm still fond of my old PSP, but never owned any Sony consoles. Only thing that bugs me about the Vita is the overpriced memory cards.
XBOne isn't even a consideration...I'm glad I didn't break down and get a 360 just for Spelunky and a few other exclusives now..

Megaman is said by Sakurai himself to be mainly a ranged fighter.

Meaning, even most of his non-special attacks are ranged.

The only three attacks that I know of that doesn't use ranged attacks is an uppercut attack, an attack involving using Rush as a springboard and that slide ability from Megaman 3.

I think it's hilarious that Sony is making such a point to stick it to Microsoft, when up to a week ago they were seriously considering doing the same thing. In fact, I heard about PS4 and it's no used game policy before ever hearing about Xbox One at all. Plus the new Xbox will have Bluray, Sony's technology, so Microsoft is already paying Sony when they sell an XB1. Why the hell are you attacking them then?

Fuck them both as far as I'm concerned. You don't take something away, then expect praise for bringing it back when it never should have left in the first place. All the cheering at Sony's announcement made me sick.

But yeah, so far the best game I've played on mah phone. :)
It has a couple of bugs and crashes, but nothing overly terrible. ^_^
Also apparently I got 104.6% completion...? >_>
Is there bonus content? Maybe that's why...? Or it's a glitch bug.

MegaMan Confirmed for the Next Super Smash Bros game
First, for the brief of the moment, while there was only a silhouette of Megaman, I though: "ohmyrockmandashstylerockmandashstyle!!!" and then he got a helmet I was: "O-o-oh =("
Why would you want a Mega Man Legends version? That game aged horribly.

Cookie Clicker (http://orteil.dashnet.org/cookieclicker/)
This is another one of those browser games where you click things to collect things to buy other things which unlock better things that make you collect things faster and you can upgrade all the things...which I keep getting addicted to (but without the microtransaction bullshit seen on shiny fingerprint collecting devices). This one has graphics and nice interface.

Previous games like this, if you missed them:

Yeah, I've had it for a while but runs pretty slow in some parts for me, even in single player. It's a lot of fun though and full of humor and references to all sorts of stuff. I like games that you don't have to take too seriously. I considered that bundle because of some of the other games too, but decided I have too much to play already.

And Blaze, you're getting too caught up in a typo, words mean whatever you mean them to mean, see what I mean?

Edmund Mcmillen told us something that happened during one of his play sessions so i will copy and paste it below

"Last week I was playing a game with Puddle, a fat female cat I had been working on earlier that day, I thawed her out of her Cryo-cube and placed her in my current single story house along with her newly generated companion Champ. I had been focusing my time on Puddle due to the fact that she seemed to have a very unique tail that I believe had helped her place 2nd in a cat pageant in a previous and I needed to breed her so I could continue her bloodline before she got too old. Sadly Champ wasn't up to snuff and Puddle made this obvious by repeatedly kicking him in the face, I separated them quickly by putting champ in the attic but when I tried to feed him.. something odd happened. See, Champ was a dullard and when Puddle kicked him he just happened to also be eating and now associated the trauma with food instead of Puddle herself, he was scared of all food.. and sadly died in the attic shortly after.

It wasn't long after though that I caught sight of a solid black stray cat named Goon, before he had a chance to run I grabbed him and pulled him inside. Goon was a much better fit for Puddle and before I knew it the humping started and puddle was pregnant! I put her in the attic with plenty of food and a bed, but quickly noticed that something was up with Goon, he seemed to be constantly falling asleep. As it turned out Goon was a narcoleptic and as you might have guessed Puddle gave birth to 2 sleeping kittens, one of them fat like his mother and black like his dad and the other small but with his mom's markings and that amazing forked tail that helped in the last pageant, but sadly both kittens were narcoleptic like their father...

Goon acted aggressively towards the kittens so I let him back out into the yard and he eventually ran away. As the kittens grew up I did enter the small one (his name was Dot) into a pageant but sadly he just fell asleep on the stage and didn't win anything. To add insult to injury Puddle also acquired feline aids from Goon and I couldn't afford any of the expensive treatments Dr. Beanies was offering so I put her back in the Cryo-cube in hopes that in the future I might have a cure for her disease once I finish a few more of the Doctor's missions.

I wasn't able to save Dot because I was arrested by the local animal control shortly after I put Puddle in the cube, probably because of letting Goon run away.. and the whole giving my other cat aids thing... or maybe it was the dead cat in the attic."

Step 1: Texture Pack
Step 2: There is no step 2.
Texture = additional, not the real game.

It's like I make a half game, you complete the rest.
D.I.Y Game :D
The game where you Do it yourself because i got lazy :P

Because Minecraft doesn't officially support textures over 16x16. (IE, you need to install a mod that fixes this incompatibility in order to use them).

If they are the devs, then why CAN'T they support it?
Also, I had used a software(forgot its name) that makes Minecraft support it.

My knowledge about the game was outdated. :P

Anyway, Minecraft doesn't support texture packs anymore.

Instead, it now has "resource packs", which can hold more than just textures.

Because it is pitifully hard to progress when everything costs like 3 trillion or more, and there are no upgrades to get. This way I'll get much more cookies when I'm at the same spot.

I really felt the same, didn't like it much at all after the first couple times I played. Hunger mechanics especially get on my nerves, I haven't seen many games that handle them well. Usually it's the real-world equivalent of having a full meal every ten minutes, which ironically would probably kill you.

After making a world where I basically don't have to worry about food, it's more fun to be able to explore without that worry. Once I can understand more about the game, I'll try playing a normal world again and probably like it better. Anyway, I don't find it like Terraria, but somewhat similar to Minecraft as far as exploration and randomness.

In other news, apparently there is a Cookie Clicker mod for Minecraft!? Crazy.

Well not mod I guess, more like a minigame thing? I don't know, just watch this :P

Because DS is more about survival. You explore to survive! You fight enemies and search for resources to survive! You DON'T STARVE to survive!

Minecraft is a sandbox. You can clearly see the difficulty difference between DS and MC. In DS, you're forced to do all the things necessary or you'll DIE! ...Or STARVE!

It's supposed to be difficult...

It's not that much of a casual game.

Title: Re: Gaming General
Post by: Arucard on September 13, 2013, 06:14:02 AM
Being possible doesn't make it casual, I don't know how many times I starved to death in Nethack because the random generator refused to give me food anywhere, or enemies which didn't make me sick when eating their corpses. If you add a mechanic, it has to be possible to use, not just an excuse to kill you and say, "Well it's supposed to be hard!" :P

Imagine if Mario had to run through levels with his shoes tied, all you do in that game is run and jump. Making that impossible doesn't make the game any fun, not even challenging, it's just annoying. I don't get the obsession with games being impossible to play these days, but if that's your thing then have fun.

Well... I understand what you mean, but you can't say it's impossible when many players have already did that. You can always customize the chances of spawning of food.
You can set traps to catch small preys like rabbits for the first few days and set up farms too.

It takes many tries to actually do good at the game. Completing Spelunky seems impossible at first (and the later levels too, if you try it using cheats), but as you play you become good at it. Compare it with Spelunky! Dying is pretty much common in Don't Starve, too!

Actually, now it makes sense why it's called 'Don't Starve'! :P

Title: Re: Gaming General

Compare it with Spelunky
Well, the thing is, is that it's really easy to survive like 15 days in Don't Starve, with default settings. The difference between Spelunky and Don't Starve is that with Spelunky, you play 5 mins, die, and then try again. In Don't Starve, you play for 3 hours, die, and then try again.
In Don't Starve it is a lot more stressful because it has a lot of time in it on the line. I can't explain how frustrated I was when I was looking through a chest on day 23 after hours of playing only to have a fucking tree stand up behind me and one shot me.
That isn't fucking fun, man.

It depends.

Afterall, genetic algorithms have been known to think outside of a box (like, one time, a self building machine based upon a genetic algorithm made itself into a radio despite the fact that wasn't the goal of the building).

From what I've read, the port is kinda buggy despite it being essentially the same game.

Like the inability to keep your save game, for example.

Another is that it's impossible to change the control mappings (or any other options that you can choose in the options executable, for that matter).

A thing that freaked me out is that it claims that YoYo Games themselves worked on the port. :o

That, and the fact that it uses Gamemaker:studio as its backend (thus, proving that it's possible to port Spelunky to Gamemaker:studio).

The game doesn't look that good.
What do you expect from such old games?

Besides, it's not the graphics that count. It's a experience.

Graphics only adds to the experience. It's not what it's made of.

That's the reason why "pure gamers" say that the Call Of Duty series and those FIFA games are not fun anymore despite pretty graphics: it's basically the same game rereleased with different graphics or different content. They're not offering new experiences.

It's also what made the Wii, PS2, etc. such a success despite inferior power compared to the other consoles of their respective era.

1. Fallout: New Vegas is made in 2010, though it's graphics aren't that good compared to games of that time. I was referring to that too.

2. I know and agree. I'm not judging the whole game by graphics. But it could have been better. As time pass, the demand for realistic graphics increase. You have to supply good graphical and sound effects, the same way you have to wrap the present you're going to give.

Although not having very good graphics doesn't mean it's bad. By "looks", you can only judge screenshots and images of a game.

Who's GalanDun?
Wasn't it Solid Snake who told you, KarjamP?
They're one and the same.

GalanDun's roleplaying as Solid Snake on Shane's forums.

I tried to "kill" him once to bring GalanDun back, but he refused to be "killed".
You mean this guy (http://mossmouth.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=19430)? :o

Made a Picross puzzle for you guys to try (http://nonograms.net?EA4IQESBFgH8cABl4ZQFCAgh22n-Xnl_-P-B3gA4AA).

Can you guess who he is? ;)

(And yes, it is Picross. It's just that it's known under many different names, nonograms being one of them.)

Something very interesting that I'm going to tell you:

In the future, there may be Nintendo DS games on the Wii U eshop. :o

I was actually suspecting that there would be DS games on the Wii U eShop. At first I was thinking they would make an add on like they did with the Game Cube for GB, GBC, and GBA games, The Game Boy Player.

Also in the future, all console and mobile games will be on PC!

That is an undeniable fact. If developers don't do it, the community/companies will.

Albeit illegally.

Also, technically, all the games for the PS4 and the Xbox One are PC games due to the nature of those two systems.

Like that'll ever happen. :P

(Unless Nintendo integrates Miiverse into Steam, that is, which is also unlikely. :P )

It was surprisingly easy to convert the Sega chant found in a Sonic 1 disassembly into a WAV file.

Downloaded a disassembly of Sonic The Hedgehog 1.

With it came a way to build it into a full fledged ROM.

I was initially reluctant into assembling it, but I did.

In a way, I just found a loophole in my downloading ROMS taboo. :o

New game engine released very recently. (Around the 10th of February of this year, to be exact.)

Said to be as feature rich as Unity, and is MIT licensed (ie, open sourced).

http://www.godotengine.org/wp/

(don't let the fact that it's beta get into your head - it's actually complete, the reason for it being considered "beta" is because the engine was previously inhouse. They still want to twig it so that it's more convenient to use for the end-user.)
